Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

There have been terrible, offensive uses of Sherlock Holmes since he became a public domain character. There have also been amazing uses. I think the latter outweighs the former (and the latter also tends to have a more lasting impact).

I don't think we have to worry about them explaining such differences this time around. Official policy now is that different editions each have their own distinct lore. So as of 2024, gnolls were always fiends, and goblins were always fey. If we see a 2024 Eberron book (and I think we're likely...

2025 Monster Manual to Introduce Male Versions of Hags, Medusas, and Dryads

It's very surprising to me that the Lupin (or any dog-folk) have yet to appear in 5e.

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Monster Manual (2025)

That's only true if the 2024 monster building rules are radically more complicated than the rules they put in the 2014 DMG, or the more accurate reverse-engineered rules others have put together.

D&D 5E (2014) What 5E Product Are You Most Looking Forward To in 2025?

True, though I would bet on many 3PPs using the 5.1 SRD to emulate the 2024 rules (rather like the 3.5 SRD was used to emulate 5e rules early on).

D&D 5E (2014) What 5E Product Are You Most Looking Forward To in 2025?

LevelUp's Monstrous Menagerie II. (Also curious if any 3P products in 2025 will be using the 2014 rules, rather than the 2024 ones.)

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Monster Manual (2025)

So far appears to be variants of existing monsters (like the empyrean iota) rather than completely new ones, but we're early into previews at this point.

Interesting, so they'll be including suggestions in the stat block for multiple options like that? Certainly would be useful.

Huh. You're probably right, hadn't thought of that. That could have some major implications for how creatures like demons and devils are handled in the book.

I guess I wasn't clear enough: the above is for what's listed in 2024 as the generic empyrean, with three paragraphs of lore. Said paragraphs are slightly shorter than their 2014 counterparts (and don't cover all of the same things, though there is overlap). However, 2024 also adds the iota as...

Well, yes and no. The empyrean from the 2014 MM has slightly more lore than the version here. But they expanded the empyrean into a general category (with overview text) and added the iota as a brand new variant. The 2024 empyrean (category) also has an evocative quote, which the 2014 version...

So less lore, more variants, more emphasis on novel game mechanics. Sounds very familiar. The return of habitat and treasure information is a pleasant surprise, though.

D&D General Who was your first character, and do you still play them?

Tifa, a very CN tiefling, in AD&D 2e. Don't remember the class, but definitely something martial, probably fighter/mage. IIRC she lasted just one or two sessions before being ported into my friend's Rifts campaign (which I think was what he really wanted to run). Game didn't go any further after...

What are you reading in 2025?

Carrying over from the end of 2024, I'm actively reading Heroes of the Feywild for D&D 4e (I'd resolved to read one book from each edition in the anniversary year and technically achieved that) and Ray Bradbury's The Martian Chronicles (my yearly classic).

Dungeons & Dragons Pinball Machine Announced

There was an earlier D&D pinball machine, way back in the 1980s: https://pinside.com/pinball/machine/dungeons-and-dragons Pinball game design has advanced a lot since then, of course.

Mainstream News Discovers D&D's Species Terminology Change

    D&D 5E (2014) I think I prefer backgrounds in 2014

One thing floating ASI encouraged by default, as presented by Wizards, was optimizing for class. So I wonder if during playtesting, the 2024 designers were put off by seeing lots of characters with near-identical, class-optimized stats, and introduced background ASI to encourage more stat...

D&D 5E (2024) "D&D Monster Manual 2025 is going to pack a serious punch thanks to a family of monsters descended from gods, and frankly I’m terrified"(Gamesradar)

Which also makes it an ideal candidate (from a Wizards standpoint at least) for an update to 2024 rules. As far as I know, the atropal first appeared in 3e's Epic Level Handbook. (Though I'm certainly not @Echohawk tier in my expertise!)
