Interesting separation. I could get on board with 5.0 as 5e up to Tasha's; 5.1 to reflect the transitional era from Tasha's to 2024, with its changing standards on rules and lore; and 5.2 for the 2024 revision itself.
Currently I call it 2024 or 2024 5E. I'll likely settle for whatever becomes the consensus for differentiating it from 2014 5E rules. (I sorta like the brevity of 5.2 but suspect that won't catch on.)
The previews for 2024 backgrounds also don't list them anymore, though it's possible they've separated them from the individual backgrounds, generalized them, and moved them elsewhere in the backgrounds section. (I suspect they're just gone, though.)
I wonder if they'll permit/encourage Mercer to do his own 2024 updates to Wildemount material. (I assume they would much rather he keep boosting the current edition, obviously.)
Personally, I suspect it's the latter. I'm now wondering what other 2014 PHB customizations might be moving into the DMG (or gone entirely) in 2024. (Matching skills with different ability scores occurred as a possibility in another thread, based on the new character sheets.)
Bonus bonus weird fact - the Eldritch Wizardry encounter tables have a subtable for "FLYERS". Within that table is "Undead-Type." Therefore, 0e has flying dopplegangers!
Up until now I didn't even think to ask - do we know if the 2024 rules will mention this as an option? Maybe they're taking that flexibility away by default (and moving it perhaps to the DMG like custom backgrounds).
At least as much lore as the 2014 Monster Manual had, for both the existing monsters and especially for the new ones. Ideally even more. Make me interested in telling stories with these monsters.
Reading the totality of the original boxed set leads me to suspect Gygax either wasn't enthused about including hobbits halflings in the game, or they were a relatively late addition. (Or both.) The above is the biggest example, but there are other instances where they weren't listed with the...
Right. All I said is that they were "undead" types in the original game.
That said, nothing in OD&D says dopplegangers aren't undead, either.
As with dopplegangers, nothing in the original will o'wisp description actually rules out them being undead. Which means their current status as undead...
In the updated wilderness encounter tables in Eldritch Wizardry, they're included under the "UNDEAD-TYPES" category. (Along with skeletons, zombies, ghouls, wights, wraiths, mummies, spectres, vampires, shadows, ghosts, liches, and will o'wisps.)
I'd say Demogorgon might compete with Orcus as ultimate demon villain, especially with the name recognition bump from Stranger Things. (And I say that as someone who prefers Orcus.)
Point of order: this isn't an updated map, it's a map of the Greyhawk of 2024 5e. The Darlene maps were of the 1e Greyhawk, which is officially a distinct entity (along with 2e and 3e Greyhawk, among others). Long-term Greyhawk fans should keep that in mind when noting any differences.
Mainly thinking here of the Dragonmarks, which incorporate ASIs and replace subraces for species that no longer have such in 2024. Maybe they'll address them specifically, but I suspect they'll just expect you to wait for the inevitable 2024-era Eberron update.
For reference, the official word:
One thing I do find interesting is that while adventures should still generally work with 2024, certain supplements now clearly won't, such as Xanathar's/Tasha's or Eberron. But I imagine they'll "fix" that soon enough by releasing 2024 compatible updates...
