Player 1: "I just saw two guys playing Russian Roulette and the first one lost and is dead." Player 2: "You can't use dead since that paints what happened as a negative and he understood the risk." Player 1: "Why on earth would we have to call it something else just because it's a negative? The...

I understand those sorts of things. My players wouldn't ask, though. They would tell me that they are using Burning Spray to set fire to the oily mimic, and then I'd allow it, deny it, or ask for a roll. They generally wouldn't ask me questions about those sorts of things. I've worked hard...

Why? Do your players not know their abilities? Mine don't generally ask. They do. And if what they are trying to do won't have a chance of working, then I say something.

Nice Strawman there. I never said they didn't ask anything at all. I said they don't ask several times in a few minutes like would happen in a social setting. I answered that already multiple times, and even spelled it out clearer in my last post. Maybe stop rolling so much and just roleplay...

Find me any rule in the 5e DMG that talks about an NPC using a social skill on a PC. Just one.

It doesn't happen in combat. The players don't ask me if they can swing at the orc. They tell me. They don't ask if they can cast a spell. They tell me. It's not the same as having to stop every few seconds to ask if it's okay to roll for this social thing or other. And it's doubly true...

D&D 5E (2024) Weird Potion House Rule Idea

It might be better to just let them use 1 potion per combat free of any actions. I'd be very hesitant to use a potion in advance, because I probably won't know which ones will be useful during that day, and mixing potions is bad if I need to use a different one later on.

It's actually in the 5e rules. None of them in the PHB or DMG are about NPCs to PC. All of them are PC to NPC and the designers confirmed that they are not supposed to be used on PCs. Now, the DM can absolutely change that, but by default they aren't supposed to be used against PCs.

The rules, which are entirely about PCs using social skills on NPCs and the designers who backed that up and said the rules social skills aren't supposed to be used on PCs.

Those situations are not the same as social play where a single couple minute conversation can have several rolls. Stopping play to ask each participant about each roll would be a large disruption to the game.

No, but they are seizing control when they successfully use a social skill on a PC. In games designed for that to happen, it's okay. If it happens to me in D&D where that's not supposed to happen, I'm walking out of the game.

Some people enjoy having agency when they play.

Magical Force is physical, that's why Wall of Force blocks physical attacks and Forcecage keeps you in.

I read the portion in question. It deals entirely with making the game interesting for the players and gives advice on how to do that when the DM interacts with PCs. None of it is about making a boring PC life not boring.

I'm curious about Daggerheart's player principles. Can you give them here?

Magic tends to be the get out of jail free card for things like this. That said, I very, VERY rarely use dominate, charms, etc. on PCs because of how much I dislike taking away agency. I will do it, though, because magic is an exception and can force PCs to do things, unlike social skills.

That's an interesting take on it. I think I would still prefer to just decide when my PC does or does not do certain things, because when I play, I prefer to just play and not have to do DM things. I'd give that way a try if a DM ran it that way, though. It's not inherently objectionable like...
