We've been talking about a highly skilled thief. But you know what, it's irrelevant if I've added master, because "master" doesn't change the issue. The issue is there whether it's a skilled thief, very skilled thief, or master thief. Focusing on master to ignore the actual issue is a Red...

Yep. It can be confusing to use "level" for that many different things. Thanks for talking about spell levels. That was the one I was forgetting. Still, all of those uses are in the proper context and meaning of level. Gygax didn't call them "spell ovals" or "character jumping beans" to cause...

In what context? The game uses multiples of it, and yes that's sloppy, too. All of the uses, though, are the commonly used variety. Character level, is how we use it in real life. "Athletes perform at a higher level than normal folk do." Dungeon level, is also how we use it in real life...

I've already showed, though, how and why that might be the case in the way we run games. If the climb is an easy one and there would otherwise be no roll, but there's a time limit to get to the top or else something bad happens, you'd want to know if they could make it in time or not, and the...

At this point I'm not sure if they are just being super sloppy with these terms, or if in the effort to differentiate their game from others, they are choosing words and phrases that have other much more commonly used meanings. Either way it's bad and causes confusion.

It's still redundant and funkily named. If they followed the other rules, and just made sure the players had fun, the characters' lives would not be boring. That's assuming of course that the principle is in fact to not make the characters' lives boring. It's a dumb and redundant principle if...

Well, no. As I pointed out, what @Enrahim could be read both ways, but I didn't know which one. The same for @TwoSix. You're the only one disregarding one of the way to read what they. You've chosen to read one in the worst light and the other in the best. I've said I don't think either one...

It's not objectionable. It's irrelevant. Far, far, FAR more important than the characters' lives, is the players' enjoyment. When the players are having fun, the characters' lives are not boring. I don't need some funkily named redundant rule. 🤷‍♂️

My take was the other way, but it wasn't me, so I can't say for sure. That said... This is wrong. Sometimes circumstances are such that the most pragmatic thing you can do is act impulsively or unthinkingly, etc. Most pragmatic for circumstances doesn't equate to always being some level of...

Being a fan means to be biased for. This could just be another bad term, though. If all it means is being a decent to good DM, then I'm all for that.

I want the players to have fun. But I'm not a fan of them, no. Now, I'm using fan in the same sense that I would be a fan of a football team. If fan=like, then sure. I like their characters, but I'm not a fan as in the sense of being a fan of something or someone. Sure. When appropriate...

No. Not without bias. Being a fan is a conflict of interest. I mean, you can discipline your child, but not without some pretty strong bias being present.

It's a ridiculous concept that a master thief becomes a keystone cop over a failure. The failure wouldn't be that severe for a master thief. We've been talking about a highly skilled thief for hundreds of pages. That's one of the big problems we have over here on my side of things. PC skill...

There is no such principle. The principle is, "Make the results interesting to the players."

It's a pretty ridiculous concept in my opinion. The master thief is quiet and stealthy with the lock unless his misses his roll, then he's an incompetent Keystone Cop thief who makes a lot of noise and alerts people. The amount of noise a master thief makes when succeeding isn't going to be...

It isn't. Luke's life was exciting, even though he went to get training, which from the look on Luke's face, was often boring. First you make the case for why I should respond to this strawman. Not one person has argued that games should be boring.

What's your rationale for successful lockpicking attempts making no noise? Because if both success and failure make noise, then noise isn't a result of the failed attempt. If you cast a silence spell it is. If not, metal on metal and the clicking of the lock tumbles is going to happen no...

The more exciting thing would have been for Luke to just go into battle to fight for the Rebellion, but instead he did the sensible thing and went to Dagobah to get Jedi training, letting his friends face danger instead. The more exciting thing would have been for Indy to just use his whip or a...

Noise is not a result of failure to pick the lock. It exists if you are successful at picking the lock. It exists if you aren't even trying to pick the lock and just shove lockpicks around in the lock for a while having fun. The only direct result of the attempt to pick the lock is success...

What does the bolded mean? It could mean that you make the most pragmatic decision that anyone could ever possibly make, which would always be the perfect decision. Or it could mean that you make the most pragmatic decision possible for the PC under those circumstances, which will often not be...
