    Glass jaw of PC defenses

A bodak reaver's fort attack only needs to hit once, but it needs to hit an appropriately softened target if it's going to hit like a freight train. And for the bodak to soften the target up, it needs to hit AC first. The Tarrasque, on the other hand, needs to hit a 30th level wizard with 10...

D&D 4E The grindyness of 4e combat: anyone tried a solo monster yet?

Oh boy! Numbers! Three characters, four roles. Sounds like a losing proposition, but there are tricks. Several classes can work into a 3/4 primary and 1/4 secondary without too much trouble. A party of three can be: 3/4 of a defender 1 leader 3/4 of a controller 1/2 of a striker Just...

    Half-Elves: Half-Eladrin?

I don't see why not. Elves and eladrin have a common pool of ancestors. It's entirely possible that the differences between them are largely due to upbringing, rather than genetics.

D&D 4E Bag of Tricks seems to be a look into 4E summoning

Are you and I looking at the same bag of tricks? An 8th-level cleric with a spear will have a +10 or +11 to hit(4 level, 2 prof., 4 or 5 str) and do 5-13 damage. The critter is at the low end of the damage, but if it's not a threat, why is the cleric? Heck, depending on the particular...

Literal reading vs common sense - which should take precedence?

Exactly. There is a purpose to common sense rulings by the DM; namely to maximize fun, usually by maintaining game balance. A DM generally should not make common sense rulings for the purpose of realism. It is common sense for a character to use the best tactics available. However, it is...

Literal reading vs common sense - which should take precedence?

Common sense says a kitten cannot tackle a bull. Common sense says that a game in which one particular player can win by simply saying "I win" will not be very much fun, even for that player. I say that exactly one of these pieces of common sense should be applied to D&D. Applying real-word...

4e A different type of disconnect??

I'm confused by the second part of this. Fighters can take a trip power at level 1, rogues and clerics each have one available at level 3, and rangers at level 7. Characters do not acquire powers at 18th level. Can you clarify, please?

Literal reading vs common sense - which should take precedence?

Common sense tells me that human beings cannot reliably launch fire from their fingertips. If common sense is to rule the day, I must insist that humans not be allowed to be wizards. The problem with using common sense is that most of us have lived most of our lives in a world profoundly...

Thievery Skill - Trained vs Untrained

Most of it, sure. But consider the following corner case: Character A: 22nd level Halfling archery ranger. Dex 26, Jack of All Trades, not trained in Thievery. Thievery skill: +21. Character B: 22nd level Human hammer fighter who took Thievery to help the party out. Dex 16, trained in...

Thievery Skill - Trained vs Untrained

I'd say tougher situations on a case-by-case basis. If the intent of the rules were that all attempts to open a lock should be trained only, it would have been a simple matter to indicate such(as with reducing falling damage under Acrobatics). Anybody can jam a piece of wire into a keyhole and...

Seal of Binding+Divine Regeneration is NOT an automatic win

Yup, ya got me there. Serves me right for stopping before I got to the "Varying Action Point Rewards" section. 'Course, if a 30th level party wins an encounter using no other resources than one daily attack and one daily utility, I'm not sure if it qualifies as "really hard", regardless of...

Seal of Binding+Divine Regeneration is NOT an automatic win

The combo does not provide a guaranteed kill. The likelihood of the combo killing the target does not affect this fact in any way, unless of course the likelihood is certainty. At no point have I claimed that Seal of Binding+Divine Regeneration would fail to massively weaken Orcus. I've only...

Seal of Binding+Divine Regeneration is NOT an automatic win

The point I'm trying to make is that it is not guaranteed to defeat the monster. The fact that it can is irrelevant. A milestone occurs at the completion of two encounters without an extended rest. I'm pretty sure Orcus does not count as a milestone. Is the warlord increasing chance to hit...

Seal of Binding+Divine Regeneration is NOT an automatic win

Hitting with Seal of Binding is one of the best actions available to the PCs. Missing with Seal of Binding is much less impressive. It all depends on how much of a gambler one is. One can pin all of their hopes on a single wis vs. will roll, or one can ensure some progress with every daily...

Seal of Binding+Divine Regeneration is NOT an automatic win

Yes, of course the typical party is 5 demigod clerics. After all, there's no reason to play anything else.

Seal of Binding+Divine Regeneration is NOT an automatic win

Yup, if you stack yet another daily power on top of it, it functions as advertised. Right, and Orcus running around for three rounds isn't going to put the cleric in a situation where Seal of Binding is not an option. It's not like Orcus can one-shot the PCs or anything.

Seal of Binding+Divine Regeneration is NOT an automatic win

There are three monsters that can survive average damage. Every appropriate level solo can survive minimum damage, and therefore the power. Many of them aren't likely to, but that doesn't make them unable to. Y'know, I'd kind of like to see how likely a party is to take out Orcus without him...

Seal of Binding+Divine Regeneration is NOT an automatic win

It is a mighty technique, but the point of this thread is that it is not that 1-shot kill. That makes it a probable kill, but note that the minimum damage is still under 1000 even at level 30. It's still not a guaranteed kill against any solo monster of appropriate level. This has joined my...

Seal of Binding+Divine Regeneration is NOT an automatic win

Yes, the cleric has ways to go toe-to-toe with Orcus using Seal of Binding. These do not, by themselves, put the cleric at any great risk. However, Seal of Binding is not guaranteed to end the fight. It is unlikely that it will kill Orcus, and when Orcus does break out, the cleric is likely...

Seal of Binding+Divine Regeneration is NOT an automatic win

Let's do some rough estimates. Say we only count sustained damage, and the cleric does 27(which is average sustained damage) per round. Orcus has 1525 hit points, and his aura damage goes from 10 to 20 when he gets bloodied. It takes the cleric about 56 rounds to defeat Orcus. Call it 50 for...
