    D&D 5E (2014) Television ball

Someone has been watching Stay Tuned. Or maybe that one episode of Supernatural with Gabriel. Anyways, as others have pointed out, this isn't really appropriate for the players to have. This is more a plot device that can lead to the start of an adventure or even a whole campaign.

D&D General To TPK or Not to TPK, that is the question...

One way to handle it is to let them die. Then, after that, ask them if they wanna try to replay the encounter (like a save point), move on to a new game, or create new adventurers to pick up where the previous adventurers left off.

    D&D 5E (2014) A couple of ideas for a blind PC

For the same reason a person may choose to play a first level human fighter even if there is already a human fighter in the party. Because it provides unique role playing opportunities and ways of interacting with the game world. Your class and race alone do not define how you play your...

    D&D 5E (2014) A couple of ideas for a blind PC

Why not just say the character is blind, and not change anything mechanically? Whenever a player willingly takes on mechanical disadvantages chasing a concept, it doesn't just hurt them but the entire party as they now have to deal with it as well. And on the flip side, people may want other...

    D&D 5E (2014) messy's 5e newbie questions thread

Why have I never thought of this?!?!?! I can think of many cases where Athletics (Con) makes so much more sense than a flat Con check or save. Thank you for reminding me that, when appropriate, the modifying stat for a skill proficiency can change.

D&D 5E (2014) Cloudkill when you play it RAW

No worries! And sorry if I was unclear. I'm not trying to say either ruling is better than another. I think they are all valid. Just providing my perspective/thought-process. Apologies if it came off any other way.

D&D 5E (2014) Eberron: Rising from the Last War Coming For D&D In November

Is this basically the hardcover for the Wayfinder's Guide?

D&D 5E (2014) Cloudkill when you play it RAW

Eh, I don't think anything in 5e rules requires such a degree of exactness. I think if it is "good enough" it is reasonable to assume it will work. I mean, people generally do not occupy exact 5ft cubes of space, but it is a useful abstraction that makes it easier to run the game. But do you...

D&D 5E (2014) Cloudkill when you play it RAW

    1) How is it rules lawyering? I'm stating that as a DM, I would allow this and that it is a reasonable interpretation of the rules. 2) Very few rules in 5e, to my knowledge, reference or require knowledge of a character's facing. My understanding of the design goals and philosophy of 5e is to...

D&D 5E (2014) Cloudkill when you play it RAW

I wouldn't say so. If A wizard casts the spell, and then turns around, it still would move away from them despite not moving away from the direction they are facing. "Move away" doesn't imply any facing rules. It there was a spell that pushed all creatures within 5ft of you 10ft away, they...

    D&D 5E (2014) Matt Colville's Retainers and Summoning Spells

So in an earlier post I posited that several problematic issues of D&D 5e (Class-Granted Beast Companions and Summoning Spells) might be able to be improved. Specifically, instead of using specific stat blocks for creatures presented in the MM, your could use retainers and reskin them to appear...

D&D 5E (2014) Cloudkill when you play it RAW

What if in the OP's Scenario, he instead cast the spell centered on himself. Does the cloud the open up in the middle then spread out in a donut shape around the caster?

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana: Barbarian and Monk

I don't like Magical Reserves. I think this would be a way more appropriate ability: Soul of Magic At 6th level, you can channel magic into greater, more purposeful effects. You learn the thaumaturgy cantrip. Additionally, whenever you finish a long rest you roll a d6 and gain the ability to...

    D&D 5E (2014) What's Your Table Look Like?

For my in person games, I have a battle map, DIY player and enemy tokens, and I have other visual media going from my laptop to the TV, as well as a music playlist to set the mood. Online though, 99% of the games I run are purely theater of the mind, though I might scribble some rough drawings...

D&D 5E (2014) Mounts and Animal Companion as Retainers

I genuinely do not understand what you are talking about or trying to say. Are you familiar with the retainer rules in Strongholds and Followers? Also, several classes get access to mounts, such as the Beast Master Ranger as well as Paladins who use the Find Steed spell. Not to mention players...

D&D 5E (2014) Mounts and Animal Companion as Retainers

The thing about retainers is that they don't have stat scores, at least not so specific as Int 10 or Dex 13 or whatever. There's nothing inherent about a retainer that gives them human, subhuman, or super human intelligence. Outside of a few specific traits such as their special attacks...

D&D 5E (2014) Mounts and Animal Companion as Retainers

So I was struck with an idea that I think is really worth considering. It's one of those things that seems so simple and obvious, yet elegant that it smacks you for not having thought of it sooner. For anyone that has Strongholds and Followers, Matt Colville provides a really great mechanic with...

    D&D 5E (2014) New Spell: Vanish

The spell seems fine to me. If you need a material component, perhaps a chameloen's scale would work.

D&D 5E (2014) How to remove spell slot from warlocks?

I agree with Sorcerers Apprentice. I actually started trying to do this myself, but it is really tough. Invocations are great, but the warlock needs more than more invocations. Also, I don't think invocations like "Cast X once per day" would be good invocations to keep, otherwise why not just...

    D&D 5E (2014) A question for athletic gamers

Played 4 years of college football and track, and 8 years of rugby post college, with lots of time racking weights. But honestly, very little of any of that training makes me inherently better at knocking down doors, lifting boulders, or tossing people (well maybe a little, as a lifter in the...
