Easy to fix: 1. You have multi-dice maneuvers that do damage without relying on the CS dice. 2. You have Advanced Maneuvers that do cooler stuff and some damage on the side. So Push turns into Improved Push turns into Greater Push.

Expertise Dice Not Necessarily Fighter Exclusive

Agreed for the Fighter. I don't know if I agree for the Rogue, Paladin, Ranger, Warlord, and Monk.

Expertise Dice Not Necessarily Fighter Exclusive

Once per round isn't right. But again, we need to ask: is the mechanism the best way to represent the character? It's not good design to throw a mechanism is that doesn't fit, just because we think the mechanic is neat.

Expertise Dice Not Necessarily Fighter Exclusive

I'm glad you brought this up. Combat Maneuvers represent years and years of training in martial combat - those are years and years of training that Rogues don't have, because Rogues were busy learning to be stealthy, to pick locks, to con people, to be good at skills, and because Rogues aren't...

Expertise Dice Not Necessarily Fighter Exclusive

Wow...this thread exploded while I was asleep. Some thoughts: First, I think assuming that all martial classes are going to tap into CS is mistaken. We already know how Rogues work, Paladins historically have divine magic abilities and the Design Goals on Paladins only re-emphasize this, and...

    Fighter

Regarding the spamming issue, I think this is where basic vs. advanced maneuvers come in. The fans of the simple Fighters, who have to be accommodated through the class mechanic, should be able to just spam Deadly Strike. However, the PA/PVP Podcast's reveal of Riposte and Whirlwind Attack...

What Each Spellcaster Is To You

Warlocks would be scrappy auto-didacts rebelling against the elitism and exclusivity of the Wizards, which I think fits in with the current class description that the Pact is needed to unlock the book learning: "Your patron grants you the insight needed to unlock the power behind the secrets...

What Each Spellcaster Is To You

Hey, it goes beyond that. In a pre-modern setting, what kind of people are going to have the time and money and literacy to sit around reading a bunch of books on magic, and what kind of people get accepted as apprentices or students at a wizard school? People born with money, which is a tiny...

Expertise Dice Not Necessarily Fighter Exclusive

If the Warlord had a CS dice ability that allowed an ally to spend a HD and gain temporary hit points that expired at the end of combat, wouldn't the loss of HD keep the adventuring day on track, since you'd basically be moving HP regeneration in time?

Is the Sorcerer Story Too Narrow for a Base Class?

I'm not actually sure how "narrow" the sorcerer story is - in the playtest packet alone, the key elements are that sorcerers have internal magic, and that sorcerers have to exert their will to keep it under control and as their willpower declines, the magic seeps out. That's it. The two-souled...

Expertise Dice Not Necessarily Fighter Exclusive

A couple thoughts: 1. I think part of the issue with people (myself included) being unwilling to see the CS mechanic spread beyond the Fighter is that, for the longest time, the Fighter didn't really have much in the way of unique and active class abilities. Given that CS was only recently...

    Fighter

Surely an alternative to having combat be a larger pillar than the other two, as the balance for fighters being "bad" at the other two is simply to create a narrower band of effectiveness? I.E, if the Fighter is merely first among equals in combat, why can't they be an equal but not first in the...

Character Creation Now Supported: Let's Make Some Characters!

Yeah. I went with Lurker and Thief schemes because I want the Roguelock to be good at stealth above and beyond its combat value. Tam o'Llayne has a bit of the Shadow vibe going on - he's incredibly good at hiding in the lightest shadows, he can douse sources of light to plunge rooms into...

Is the Sorcerer Story Too Narrow for a Base Class?

Precisely. I think we need to be careful about making judgments based on one blood-line. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a Wild Magic bloodline that was quite like the one you described. One question I have that hasn't been raised much - how much difference is there between a Fae-bloodline...

    Fighter

Sort of. Mostly physical skills I agree with, general Strength/Dex/Con checks sure, but I think the key thing is going to be how the Exploration pillar is written up. What I think we need are Locations/Objects that are written up more like Traps with lists of skills/ability scores and how you...

    Fighter

Here's the thing - I don't think the Fighter needs to be "poor" at the other pillars, but rather "narrow," and then the trick is to make sure that the "narrow" aspect of the Fighter's non-combat abilities appears often enough in adventures and the like so that people don't feel the Fighter is...

    Fighter

I think if we're going to make the Fighter more interesting we should do it through the Combat Superiority System, so that we accomplish our aims while still allowing CS to act as a "dial" between Simple and Complex Fighter. I've got a whole thread of ideas here, but the gist of it is: More...

Character Creation Now Supported: Let's Make Some Characters!

Ok, here's my first stab for critique (I had to do some guessing about how multi-classing works so this is still rough: Tam o'Llayne of the Rhyming Woods (Rogue 1, Warlock 1) Abilities: Strength 9 (-1) Int 16 (+3) Dex 17 (+3) Wis 11 (+0) Con 13 (+1) Cha 14 (+2) (Note: Standard Array, Human...

Warlocks: Goodbye Rogues, we hardly knew you

On the other hand, Fae Pact Warlock is looking like a pretty good (if not the best possible) Rogue multi-class. Combine Eldritch Blast with Sneak Attack for 5d6 at level 1, Ethereal Stride, Shadow Veil, and the level 5 Fae Pact Boon to improve movement, Breath of Night to boost Stealth...

Character Creation Now Supported: Let's Make Some Characters!

I've been trying to create a similar concept (a cosmopolitan mercenary officer), and I ended up scavenging from the Noble and the Soldier to pick up Diplomacy and Societal Lore for my background (I also wanted an aide-de-camp, but didn't need three lackeys). In terms of specialties, on the...
