D&D 5E (2024) The Great Nerf to High Level Martials: The New Grapple Rules

If we’re talking niche protection and unarmed combat, isn’t the point to protect the Monk’s niche as the unarmed martial class? Because those guys do punch harder than swords, but they have other limitations that keep them within power ranges. Whereas if you can play an unarmed fighter or...

    D&D 5E (2024) How to import "race" flavor into D&D 2024 inclusively

I think the concept of "natural talent" is mostly naughty word; sure, there are always going to be your Michael Phelpses who are the extreme tail ends of distribution curves. But it's not like those people only train to improve their technique; they have to train like hell to turn their potential...

    D&D 5E (2024) How to import "race" flavor into D&D 2024 inclusively

I like how Call of Cthulhu does it, where as you age your education and wisdom increases with experience, but your physical stats get a bit weaker.

D&D 5E (2024) Rogue's Been in an Awkward Place, And This Survey Might Be Our Last Chance to Let WotC Know.

Interesting; slightly more flexible (although less powerful at lower levels) and it scales without needing additional rules text at later levels. I like it!

    D&D 5E (2024) How to import "race" flavor into D&D 2024 inclusively

This is accurate. There was a decent amount of travel for pilgrimages, although that was economically gated, as the supply of lodging/food was often rather limited prior to the emergence of inns as opposed to taverns, so it could be quite expensive - hence why you see both bandits and pirates...

D&D 5E (2024) The Cleric should be retired

If it bothers you, I think the simplest fix is to give Starry Whisp to Clerics as well as Bards and Druids. They're pretty equivalent.

D&D 5E (2024) Rogue's Been in an Awkward Place, And This Survey Might Be Our Last Chance to Let WotC Know.

So I had an idea over on the other place, and I'm curious whether people think this would be a modest enough addition to the Rogue to give them a bit of a bump and eliminate some minor issues without stretching the power budget: Give the Rogue a weaker version of Stroke of Luck at lower levels...

D&D 5E (2024) The Cleric should be retired

Right, that's what I was getting at - I think Sacred Flame is perfectly cromulent, we just have an incorrect perception because of player rolls vs. DM rolls.

D&D 5E (2024) The Cleric should be retired

IIRC, people have done the math and attacks connect 65% of the time on average.

D&D 5E (2024) Find Familiar, the Alert feat, and the loss of the fly-by Owl.

Yeah, we ran into this in a previous campaign and the DM just started having wandering monsters attack the familiar on-sight. Eventually, the repeated 1 hr delays to resummon the familiar kept things in check, such that we didn't solely rely on the familiar to scout, but still used it to let us...

D&D 5E (2024) The Cleric should be retired

Doesn't that mean it's connecting more than an attack would normally, on average?

D&D General Reassesing Robert E Howards influence on D&D +

Well, the Silver Age is where the continuity focus really started, especially as Marvel really emphasized the shared universe thing, so that editorial would keep close track of who was where/when so that Spider-Man or the X-Men weren't in two places at the same time. This was also the time...

    D&D 5E (2024) How to import "race" flavor into D&D 2024 inclusively

I'm not arguing that point. I don't think it's just a question of breakpoint math; 2e didn't have feats, so while it had less pressure in one direction (although I don't think it was as loose as you think - I remember the pressure to get 18/XX Strength on a Fighter), it didn't have the...

    D&D 5E (2024) How to import "race" flavor into D&D 2024 inclusively

I did, but your arguments aren't that persuasive. Feats can be fun, but so can ASI - numbers go up is a big motivating factor for players. I think the issue is more is the mix between the two. Also, I don't agree that the GM has "little freedom to use actually reward players" with...

D&D 5E (2024) The Cleric should be retired

There is monasticism in Hinduism, but not in Islam. There has sometimes been monasticism in Judaism, but it's rather uncommon and many of the communities that practiced it didn't survive to the present. So it is more universal than two religions, but it's not necessarily ubiquitous.

I agree that magic unarmed items with be introduced, but I don't think they're going to be intended for Fighters - I think they'll be for Monks, primarily, and after that Punchadins and maybe Tavern Brawler Barbs.

    D&D 5E (2024) How to import "race" flavor into D&D 2024 inclusively

You were saying that 5e's system for increasing attributes is bad for DMs and only good for players, I was suggesting that that's not the case. Moreover, I think that your concern with the supposed downsides for DM and your comments in about design and who buys the most books speaks to a not...

    D&D 5E (2024) How to import "race" flavor into D&D 2024 inclusively

I think in general leaving it to peer pressure is a bad idea, that’s a recipe for tension at the table and people not enjoying themselves and groups breaking up. And given that 5e is several factors more successful than any earlier edition and has been selling well for ten years, I somehow...

    D&D 5E (2024) How to import "race" flavor into D&D 2024 inclusively

The players are the overwhelming majority of the people at the table, and ultimately the DM is trying to tell a story they will enjoy. So yeah I think it is good design.
