D&D 5E (2024) Rogue's Been in an Awkward Place, And This Survey Might Be Our Last Chance to Let WotC Know.

How can it be in the middle of the pack if it's one from the bottom?

Ok, this isn't up-to-date but it's good to have some numbers to work with. However, I would describe this as a different situation than the one you described here and here. Yes, the DPR-specced Rogue is above the baseline, but the DPR-specced Rogue is not "near the top of damage," they are...

D&D 5E (2024) How to answer the WOTC playtest survey....

Also, there's a damn good reason why "Needs a Rewrite/Needs Minor Tweaks" is not an option: the devs do not have unlimited time/development budgets, and the portion of the fanbase who fills out these surveys is not particularly recognizant of that. However much time has been spent rewriting and...

This is why I mentioned the Power Level pre-publication "pass" in my survey. I'm not asking for or expecting another Rogue playtest pack, just flagging that this is an issue to be considered for the pass.

Presumably, we determine by looking to see who's getting the math right, no?

That assumes both sides are equally on the money - it could also be that one side or the other is just wrong. I'm certainly going to go looking through Treantmonk's videos to see if I can find an updated calculation, but it should be possible to compare the two sets of calculations and see which...

D&D 5E (2024) Rogue's Been in an Awkward Place, And This Survey Might Be Our Last Chance to Let WotC Know.

Ah, I see. It got changed in Playtest 5! I must have missed it because the rule was different in 1-4. Still, it's different from what I was recommending - which was to change it for Rogues, not for all other classes. As it stands, anyone who takes a background with Thieves' Tool Proficiency...

How are they changing tool use? I’ve looked around and can’t find anything definitive from the devs.

I don’t agree that the changes were minor. However, if he’s done an up to date full comparison, I’ll certainly check it out - I’m a subscriber and watch all of his videos when they come out on YouTube, and I don’t remember seeing one. Was this something on his Discord or Patreon or something?

D&D 5E (2024) Rogue's Been in an Awkward Place, And This Survey Might Be Our Last Chance to Let WotC Know.

This is why in the survey I recommended giving the Rogue Expertise in Thieves Tools as an option, and giving them the optional rule in Xanathar’s about combining tool and skill proficiencies. This would make the Rogue the undisputed best option for dealing with traps and locks, something that...

D&D 5E (2024) Rogue's Been in an Awkward Place, And This Survey Might Be Our Last Chance to Let WotC Know.

I think Treantmonk’s analysis is probably accurate - but it’s out of date. He did that video when Playtest 6 had just come out, but there have now been several packets that have iterated on the Barbarian, Monk, and Fighter and his calculations understandably couldn’t have accounted for those...

D&D 5E (2024) Rogue's Been in an Awkward Place, And This Survey Might Be Our Last Chance to Let WotC Know.

This is why I think the Rogue needs a boost in Sneak Attack dice - even if the Rogue isn’t meant to be the top damage dealer among martials, this is too big a gap for Rogues’ expert tools to make up for.

    D&D 5E (2024) Playtest 8 Monk Discussion

Porting an idea I had about the 4E Monk over on Reddit, what do people think about these improvements to the playtest 6 version? The Elementalism cantrip could be significantly improved, much closer to Gust, Control Flames, Mold Earth, and Shape Water rolled together. That feels a lot more...

D&D 5E (2024) Survey is Live for Unearthed Arcana PHB Playtest 8

Did mine. Mostly very laudatory on the Monk - I did mention that the free version of Patient Defense should gain the benefit of Sap to bring its power up slightly compared to the other Monk's Discipline options, and that Wholeness of Body and Quivering Palm are a bit underwhelming. Regarding...

D&D General Reassesing Robert E Howards influence on D&D +

Yes that's true - the whole idea (later borrowed by authors like George MacDonald Fraser and others) is that the stories were supposed to Conan's old war stories, related to his buddies depending on what memory was sparked by a sudden thought. At the same time, there is a rough arc established...

D&D 5E (2024) How to buff healing, make it reliable and discourage whack-a-mole?

I like that. Makes Fighters and Barbs tankier without hurting everyone else - as long as the math works out the same.

D&D 5E (2024) How to buff healing, make it reliable and discourage whack-a-mole?

Yeah, I agree. We could do all kinds of complex changes, or we could just double the dice and see whether that's enough of a fix.

    D&D 5E (2024) Playtest 8 Monk Discussion

I don’t think that’s as true in the current edition. Hence why we’ve seen a move away from nova and towards sustainability as with the changes to Paladin‘s Divine Smite.
