    D&D 5E (2024) Playtest 8 Monk Discussion

OTOH, an 11th level Environmental Blast is doing 3d10 (plus the Unarmed Attack), and the Monk can do it 5 times per Short Rest plus another 5 times per Long Rest. Whereas the 11th level Fireball can be done 2 times per Short Rest and that's it. It's less damage per "spell," but you actually...

    D&D 5E (2024) Playtest 8 Monk Discussion

Ah, I see what you mean. Or it's entirely possible it gets moved into the Magic Action, since it's clearly part of the damage calculations of the ability. That is massively shaping the battlefield! Being able to push and pull targets from range is a big effect. The old version was widely...

    D&D 5E (2024) Playtest 8 Monk Discussion

It does, but the Monk cares less about that than other classes. How do you mean the additional attack does nothing? It's an additional attack's worth of damage that absolutely should be included in the consideration of whether the AOE is worth the investment of DP. And given the 4E Monk's...

    D&D 5E (2024) Playtest 8 Monk Discussion

The cantrip I think we'll have to wait for the Prestidigitation/Thaumaturgy heads to work out its potential uses. I think Elemental Burst is more than situational - you can catch a hell of a lot of enemies in a 20-foot sphere, and it's guaranteed damage plus an Unarmed Attack. With the 4E's...

D&D 5E (2024) 2024 needs to end 2014's passive aggressive efforts to remove magic items & other elements from d&d

FWIW, I think low-magic 5e can work, but it is true that the DMG could provide better detail for how to do it.

D&D General Reassesing Robert E Howards influence on D&D +

Ok, I gotcha, but I don't agree with the thing about instinct vs. planning. Conan often succeeds because of his caution and understanding: in "Jewels of Gwahlur," for example, Conan triumphs where his rivals fail because he took his time to understand the secret door and use it to spy on people...

How so? Can you add specifics, because I think it kind of does.

No, it's Disengage and Disadvantage for free.

    D&D 5E (2024) Playtest 8 Monk Discussion

Prompted by a thread over on reddit: what do people think of adding the Sap feature to the free version of Patient Defense, to give it a bit of a boost compared to Dodge/Bonus Action Unarmed Strike or Flurry? I think it might hit the sweet spot of being a decent benefit but not being too strong...

    D&D 5E (2024) Worldbuilding Differences between 5e and 5.5?

I prefer the Unseelie as part of the Feywild - after all, the Queen of Air and Darkness/Queen Mab and the Prince of Frost are very evocative characters, and have a different, more nature-based vibe compared to the Raven Queen's death motif. However, I do like the idea of "sideways" travel...

    D&D 5E (2024) Worldbuilding Differences between 5e and 5.5?

I think this would work. It's just a different terminology for the existing Planar Portals mechanic, that's a bit more evocative of the specific aesthetic of the Feywild and Shadowfell.

    D&D 5E (2024) Worldbuilding Differences between 5e and 5.5?

I have always been a fan of "Thin Places" in folklore and fiction. It would certainly make adventuring parties less reliant on Plane Shift.

D&D General Reassesing Robert E Howards influence on D&D +

I think there are more than the ones you cite. "The Tower of the Elephant" is absolutely a low-level dungeon crawl where two thieves are looking to pillage an evil wizard's tower for loot and have to deal with guards and wandering monsters - there's even a magical MacGuffin, although Conan...

He's 100% a Stygian sorceror who secretly follows Set - he has the same snake eyes that Thoth-Amon did.

I also like how there’s even a very gradual plot about him and the Prince and the prince’s mistress that loosely ties back into the main plot.

I was going to second this recommendation. Busiek did a great job expanding Conan's supporting cast, and I agree that he found a relatively deft way to deal with chronology - something that stumped a lot of REH pasticheurs from L. Sprague de Camp to Robert Jordan.

D&D 5E (2024) Cantrip using Monks only using unarmed attacks with bonus actions

I think the lack of +mod to damage is going to be telling. The Monk's Unarmed Attack starts at an average of 6.5 damage, versus 5.5 from Chill Touch. Then at level 5, Unarmed Attack is probably an average of 17 damage, whereas Chill Touch would be 11. And so forth.

D&D 5E (2024) New Unearthed Arcana Playtest Includes Barbarian, Druid, and Monk

FWIW, I don't think it's necessarily all or nothing either. After all, it's all a means to an end of people being able to enjoy the game. So, for example, there's absolutely no reason there couldn't be a "recurve bow" that had the exact same game statistics as the longbow, but had descriptive...

D&D 5E (2024) The Cleric should be retired

In regards to ranged healing, Healing Word and Mass Healing Word did just get twice as good in the base spell and in upcasting. And there's the new Power Word Fortify and Conjure Celestial too.
