    TSR Q&A with Gary Gygax

OK, I'll get to work on the hypnosis emoticon straight away! Let's see, Wikipedia is usually a good place to start...

Where can I find the description for Iggwilv?

I think I'd make her a conjurer, what with her whole summoning and binding history. I'd keep it simple with the PrC's, probably just archmage -- I like the loremaster angle, but I see her as more of a doer than a researcher, and I don't see any other PrC's that fit the notion of spellcasting...

    TSR Q&A with Gary Gygax

Gary, I'll echo what others have said: the film is one of the most faithful adaptations, very solid. The embellishments were primarily in the action sequences and some modernization. Now, I think it would be very cool if they were to make a Bond film now set in the '50's, but failing that...

Where can I find the description for Iggwilv?

No stats were given in Return of the Eight. Mr. Moore positioned her as a threat clearly beyond the PC's power level, and said her spell effects would be beyond 25th level. Also check out Artifact of Evil and Sea of Death; Gygax gives her a fair amount of attention.

Looking for an Epic level module/adventure

Upper Krust, thanks for the kind words! I agree that scaling Hourglass for 25th level shouldn't be a problem. And I happen to know for a fact that there are a few epic proposals in the slushpile at Dungeon right now, so more epic choices may be available in the not-too-distant future.

    Improved Counterspell

Huh, I'd never looked closely at that spell before. Counterspelling as a free action is very nice, but I have to say that the spell text leaves me confused. Under what conditions does the spell end when you successfully counter a spell? Only when you don't have line of sight to the...

Which Is The Stronger Character Class - Sorcerer or Wizard?

I like the idea of the sorcerer, I like the thought of something that plays different from the wizard/magic-user while filling the same role, I'm always experimenting with them, but I always come to the same conclusion: wizards are hands-down more powerful. I think you could eliminate the...

What should have been included in 1E's UA that wasn't in there?

I disagree. With single and double weapon specialization the UA fighter had much more combat punch than a barbarian with the same xp's. The barbarian also had a number of restrictions in use of magic items and association with magic-users which clearly differentiated him from a fighter. All...

    History: OD&D to AD&D 1st edition

Psionics OD&D to AD&D In this vein of OD&D and AD&D and balance: I was flipping through the OD&D books over the holidays, and noticed something for the first time: Eldritch Wizardry introduced psionics, with a structure similar to that found later in the AD&D PHB and DMG, but with one...

    Godhood as epic prestige classes?

I like the idea of an epic PrC that gets you to Divine Rank 0. Personally I think 40th character level should be about the end of the line for mortals, and if that's not equivalent to a typical DvR 0 demigod, it's pretty close. Make it a 5-level PrC suited for levels 36-40 and I think it could...

Is D&D magic purely Vancian? Let's settle this.

Ooh, OK, here are a couple more. "The Broken Sword" by Poul Anderson, pretty dark but still what I think of as great classic fantasy. "Jirel of Joiry" by C. L. Moore, a collection of short stories. "The Worm Ouroboros" by E.R. Eddison, a big, fat epic. Vance's "Lyonesse" trilogy is great too...

Is D&D magic purely Vancian? Let's settle this.

Gary Gygax was describing the D&D magic system as "Vancian" way back in the early days of Dragon, and in as much as he created it, I'd say his description is accurate. See his article "The Dungeons and Dragons Magic System", republished in "Best of The Dragon" (vol. I). Purely Vancian? Well...

    I Have A Problem With 3E

I really like this idea. I think a character with a single buff in effect is fine. Multiple simultaneous buffs is too videogamey for me (not that I haven't done it; I just want someone to save me from myself). If you did have a single-buff limit, it's probably reasonable to go back to the 3.0...

What was so magical about 1E/OD&D art?

1E art means two different things to me. First, I've got a great deal of nostalgia for the Erol Otus work; it's odd and distinct and even though I never imagined my characters or the monsters to look that way, it was an element of what set D&D apart for me. What others have said about the...

How Broken Is It to Just Advance Characters Past 20th w/o Epic Rules?

Apologies if this has already been mentioned. Another option is to use the pre-ELH epic rules as set forth in FRCS, p. 289. At each level beyond 20th, you may do one of the following: +1 effective level: Pick a class you have, get the class features and skill points; can't go above 20th...

Complete Mage - Is it out yet?

This really bugs me. I mean, this seriously, deeply annoys me. How many years passed before sorcerers finally got a feat allowing full, unrestricted use of metamagic? If this doesn't destroy game balance (and I believe it doesn't) then why, oh why, did it take us this long to get here...
