The paladin needs help with some bloody situation

Not to get all "biblical on your @$$" but this is in fact not what the biblical reference means at all. What it means is that if you lost an eye then you can't take more than an eye in retribution, if you lost a tooth, then all you can take is a tooth. It's a principle of limitation, not an...

    Did you notice?

When Bilbo drops the ring (when he leaves after his party) it doesn't ring like a piece of metal, but thumps onto the ground, perhaps signifying the huge weight it represents. I liked that touch. (Is that ok Lady Starhawk?:( )

Perhaps his armour included a helmet? Many suits of armour did, apparently.;)

    Have gamers ever been tolerant?

Duncan Haldane Many apologies sir. I knew I'd get in trouble when I spoke for the whole of Australia. Living at the arse-end of the world over here in Perth, I really should have been less sweeping in my generalisations. Sorry The Grumpy Celt Man, I thought I was cynical. I won't waste my...

    Have gamers ever been tolerant?

I started roleplaying in 1982/3. The term "power-gamer" existed then. It was used with snobbery against me a lot. "Munchkin" I first heard about in an editorial by Gary Gygax in Dragon magazine about two years ago. It's not a term that was common in the Australian gaming community prior to...

the most common non-magic magic items

Celebrim, sorry but I gotta go against you on this one. While I do happen to have the best rules knowledge of anyone in my group - and believe me that's not saying much - I really don't believe that rules knowledge is that important for a DM. IME if you have the players' trust then little...

the most common non-magic magic items

One of my favourites has always been the Infallible Encyclopaedic Beastiary (ie. Monster Manual). Nothing annoys me more as a GM than the third level fighter flicking to the right page in the MM to find out the particular weaknesses of the monster he's never faced before.

Charity Fundraiser - our own setting search!

I'm at work with a five minute break between meetings, but I had this idea so I had to post it. How about we make our "one pagers" by word limit rather than page limit. The "one page" limit caused a huge amount of confusion in the original stages. A word limit would put everyone on the exact...

Charity Fundraiser - our own setting search!

Given that I joined ENWorld to gather intelligence on the setting search in the first place, I naturally support this in whatever form it comes. The only question - do I leave my loser submission the same or do I tweak to improve my chances??:( Decisions! Decisions!

    guns in my campaign

Bug, flintlock balls could be deflected by the leather bandoliers which soldiers used to carry their powder and shot. Chainmail would almost never have been penetrated. Until the advent of rifling and cased ammunition, the explosive force of gunpowder (the main source of a bullet's penetrating...

Merged WotC setting search winners/losers thread

I was going to post mine, but after reading just the ones here, I can see why mine didn't stand out. At least three have nearly the same core ethos sentence as mine, and my "Who are the heroes." has been split across a couple of other peoples' as well. So, you know, like...bummer!

Knife Fighter (Opinions and Playtesters Wanted)

I don't mean to be negative, but I really feel that something as specialised as this should be a prestige class, probably slated towards fighters and rogues. Cool concept though.

    guns in my campaign

I don't know if this is helpful, but until the introduction of cartridge, a gun had very little chance of penetrating armour. Ranged touch attack should realistically be for revolver level tech and higher only. Also, consider making a pistol a ranged weapon that doesn't attract an attack of...

Portrait of an elven weapon master

Have you considered the Iaijutsu Master? It also gets canny defense, and sits well with wakizashi wielding. Two weapon is not a feature though. Of course, the Bladesinger PrC also gets canny defense.

(OT) Teenager dies of Acute Stupidity Disorder

The blowholes near where I live - Western Australia - have taken several lives over the years and are adequately sign-posted. If one of these takes you out, it's your own fault (assuming that you read English). But a blowhole is not a geyser. It doesn't bubble, it doesn't roar or make any...

Yes! When they're fleeing the nazgul. I had to show my wife the scene about six times on video before she could see it.

Actually, the things that come out are all vermin - I sort of saw that as the presence of the ringwraith brings death and corruption. *shrug*
