    Avatar:TLA Game

Not a full conversion but Me and a friend has shamelessly stolen Zuko and Iroh as the basis for our characters for our current D&D 5E game. We've both playing Way of the Four Elements monks which. (And she has taken Magic Adept with Druid Fire spells) Despite the negative assessment of the...

    D&D 5E (2014) question about surprise

I'd totally allow surprise in a social situation, esp if it involves the level of deception of a doppleganger assassin. I'd probably use Insight vs Deception (or Deception vs Passive Insight) instead of Stealth and Perception if I felt it was relevant. Generally two groups meeting the...

    D&D 5E (2014) rapier+dagger and/or longsword+dagger?

Quite useful if it could also be used to Attack with a bonus action instead of parrying, if you want to go on the offensive.. Gives versatility to using a D4 damage weapon in offhand rather than a D6 damage shortsword/handaxe. (Perhaps remove the throwing ability to differentiate it from a...

    How do Governments Align?

Putting aside my rabid anti-alignment nerd rage buttons at the door. Trying to reconcile Alignment as very broad strokes over the behaviour of many individuals and the sorta romantic psuedo-feudalism that many D&D settings have. Also how much the ruler mirrors the alignment of the majority of...

    D&D 5E (2014) rapier+dagger and/or longsword+dagger?

I likewise would be happy to allow Longsword/rapier (or hell battleaxe/warhammer) and an off hand dagger. Esp. if the character had either the Two-weapon fighting style or Dual Wielder feat. As has been pointed out, it deals a bit with the weakness of duel wielding when characters get multiple...

Go to http://dnd.wizards.com/articles and use the dropdown searchy thingy to "Unearthed Arcana" Modern Magic 3/Aug/2015 Ranger 9/Sep/2015 Rune Magic & Prestige 05/Oct/2015 UnderDark 11/Nov/2015 And one on Dark Magic and Demon summoning from 7/Dec/2015

D&D 5E (2014) Older dragons don't seem to do much damage.

I perhaps envisage what classes and levels and feats mean in my worlds somewhat differently. "High" Dex and feats aren't something that are just taught on target ranges, like levels and classes they're a function of the touch of destiny on characters and are talented . And the sort of people who...

D&D 5E (2014) Older dragons don't seem to do much damage.

This is taking a bit of a tangent but: The huge, ancient red dragon in 1E AD&D has 11 HD, 88 hp, an AC of -1. To my knowledge 0 level archers would still need a natural 20 to hit it, but it was still vulnerable to them. More so than 5E where the disadvantage mechanic exists. Yep it was immune...

    D&D 5E (2014) Magic Items for individuals?

Lots of us have come from 3E and 4E backgrounds, and whilst they got a lot of things right, some of us really dislike the wealth per level and golf bags of magic items that came with it. If magic items feel too common they become a necessity, not something well... magical. Esp. if the game maths...

D&D 5E (2014) Rogue Proficiency Bonus Doubling Question

As delericho said. The term "ability check" can throw people out a bit. Since Attack Rolls and Saving Throws function in a very similar way, but aren't Ability checks. Everytime you roll a D20 and add an ability score and maybe your proficiency modifier then you're either: Making a Attack...

    D&D 5E (2014) Weak 5e monsters

I might be wrong, but don't 5E monsters often end up having more hitpoints due to CON modifers and bigger dice? Monster Hitdice were D8 weren't they? 20 x D8 hit points averages to 90hp T-Rex in 5E has 136 (13D12 + 52) (The same could be said for players having more HP as well) Otherwise yes...

D&D 5E (2014) [5E] The few mechanical implications of Alignment

I envision a totalitarian theocracy (like Istar in Dragonlance) that sends adventurers out to capture sprites so they can be forced to serve Inquisitors to identify the sinful.

D&D 5E (2014) [5E] The few mechanical implications of Alignment

(I posted this a while back on the WoTC forums and RPG.net, occurred to me that some people on Enworld might be interested as well.) So, 5E is pretty light when it comes to rules and alignment intersecting. But I suffer from an obsession with it given my a militant anti-alignment tenancies, so...

    D&D 5E (2014) Multiclass Wizard/Cleric

It's in the Spells Known and Prepared and Spell Slots section of page 164 of the PHB. "You determine what spells you know and can prepare for each class individually as if you were a single class member of that class." The language is made clearer by their example of the Ranger 4/Wizard 3, who...

    D&D 5E (2014) Immersion For Players

The groups I play with and run games for are very much focus on the acting/active approach to roleplay, speaking in character as much as possible; possibly because many of us are LARPers as well so are very used to it. ... HOWEVER this isn't the One True Way of Roleplaying (tm), despite what...

    D&D 5E (2014) Spells as combat weapons.

Hmmm, I'd agree, but close reading of the Magic Stone spell: Since slings have a range of 30'/120'. I rather take it that you have a choice if you have a sling to hand. (Although of course it's actually better to throw it if it's 31-60' away and use a sling to attack with disadvantage...

    D&D 5E (2014) Spells as combat weapons.

    1) Yes. If the spell requires an attack roll, then it's an attack and can crit. If it requires the target to make a saving throw (like fireball, poison spray or sacred flame) then it can't crit. 2) No. I don't believe so. Emphasis mine. A Ranged Spell Attack or a Melee Spell Attack doesn't...

    D&D 5E (2014) Weapons: Nunchuku

Oddly it's mentioned twice in the core rules. The Monk section of the PHB (page.78) suggests the nunchaku is a reflavoured club. The Wuxia section of the DMG (page.41) lists the nunchaku is a alternative name for a flail.

D&D 5E (2014) What are your favorite combos?

Hex from the Warlock + Shove prone/off something from the big strong type, esp. with the bonus action shove from the Shield Master feat. Very few monsters or NPCs are proficient in Athletics or Acrobatics. Yes they could choose to use the other stat instead but few monsters have high STR and DEX.
