Too powerful? What am I missing... (please help)

I'm in the middle of trying to make a psionic character for an eberron game that is starting at level 2. My concept is a kalashtar orphan, and I'd like to make a gish-like (meaning fighter/mage) psionic character. My first impulse was SoulKnife1/Psion1 (Nomad) and let's see what happens. Today...

What is it with Sage Advice & Tome of Battle?

That is not relevant to whether or not power creep is occurring. Are many of the new classes balanced for play? Yes. Do some of them represent power creep in the game? Yes. If you don't want to believe the warlock can be situationally more powerful than a wizard or sorcerer, I'm sure you can...

What is it with Sage Advice & Tome of Battle?

They're unprovable. You want me to poll the entirety of d&d'ers to sate your stance on power creep? As far as care about them, it's the objective truth. Twist it all you like, it's hard to disagree that in certain situations (far less fanciful than the party being turned to toads) the warlock...

What is it with Sage Advice & Tome of Battle?

What evidence? How many times would a warlock have to be abused to get the power creep stamp of approval? I'd rather compare it to a caster of the same level, but its really irrelevant. The point is its an effect that never expires short of character becoming unconscious. I believe...

What is it with Sage Advice & Tome of Battle?

I agree that a paladin has a lot more baggage than most clerics. Do you agree that clerics have more baggage than most fighters?

What is it with Sage Advice & Tome of Battle?

I guess I should have ended that with 'Because there is more to the game than just combat'. A cleric has a lot of story-baggage that some players don't want to deal with it. You won't find that on a chart or in side-by-side stat evaluations though. I realize the Warlock does not have the...

What is it with Sage Advice & Tome of Battle?

Again, as Piratecat pointed out, there are some books which are on the curve and some above and below. Pointing out that they printed books which do not cause power creep does not somehow negate the books they print that do cause it. Tome of Magic and PHB II are weaker than core casters? What...

What is it with Sage Advice & Tome of Battle?

Its just more of an example of power creep in the game. More power, at earlier levels = power creep. I'm not denouncing the trend, just calling a cat a cat. If you have fun playing a swordsage and dealing 100s of points of damage, and your group is cool with it, more power to you (literally)...

Too powerful? What am I missing... (please help)

The concern is that when you have a wilder in the party, there IS only 1 round (even if a wilder 'only' manages to do 50-60% of an enemy's damage, the rest of the party might be able to finish off a significant enemy of an encounter higher than their level (dealing 10-15% each)).

What is it with Sage Advice & Tome of Battle?

It's quite simple. People buy and use stuff that is above the established power level (ie- books that power creep). People may buy the stuff that is below the established level, but it doesn't get used much. So really, who cares? If you are talking about game balance, the expansion that...

What is it with Sage Advice & Tome of Battle?

'Pretty much everyone' is very vague. People like to vote and see that they voted correctly. If you put a poll of 'Most Powerful Class' on the general board, you would get a lot of druid, wizard, and cleric responses. That does not mean it is necessarily true. It is just popular opinion. A few...

What is it with Sage Advice & Tome of Battle?

Fixed. Power Creep is the increase in power over the course of time. You say that the fighter was weak, and that Tome of Battle makes melee combatants more powerful. That is power creep. The fact that many consider casters to be overpowered has nothing at all to do with it. It would be very...

    Heroic stats

Stat inflation just seems silly to me. I like to think characters with an 18 or 20 strength are pushing the boundaries of non-magical strength for a small or medium character. Once you get into the 30s or 40s (without magic) my suspension of disbelief can't take it anymore. With magic, sure you...

Would you roll the d4 if...

Because the difference between having a level 2 wizard's spell repotoire and not requires babysitting. Play the character. Youre a great and powerful wizard (or will be one day) and you need your spellbook back. Are you going to cry in your cups or figure out what happened to it? Or do all level...

    Serenity Roleplaying Game

But its distressing to see that the mechanics are slighted against you. What if it was stormy, you were being chased, and you had taken some damage? Automatic crash-landing? Why roll the dice, if thats what needs to happen dramatically (or if there is no way in hell you'd be able to make the...

What is the standard ability score set? Are most games playing too high?

At that point, why not just say: "Everyone assign ability points to your character based on your background/what you want to play". If you have players with restraint, I think it could work fine.

What do you do for... Sorcerers?

I use the Monte Cook sorcerer, from BoEM. Basically: d6 HD 4 skill points per level Diplomacy and Gather Information are class skills Inherent Eschew Materials (it's not a feat, they just dont need materials to cast spells - if a material component is required, they may pay 1/25th of the gp in...

Selling loot for half price - why?

    1. Don't worry about the wealth per level too much. If you gave them enough wealth and they chose to sell some of it, RAW they are still alright (obviously if you take what I've just said to an excessive point you'll get PCs unable to overcome challenges) 2. 50% is a good deal for most small...

But they'll sing songs about your character long after you've left the group for anything heroic you manage to do

Would you roll the d4 if...

Its a hook. Its not like your spellbook which you painstakingly assigned spells to during creation doesn't exist anymore, it is simply not on your person. Especially since this was on the easiest table ('misfortune') people are reading wayyy to much into this. Maybe it was stolen, you misplaced...
