Paragon one-on-one: A slayer versus the world

The advantages of a slayer over a standard fighter are numerous for your scenario. 1. The defender abilities and marking of the fighter are largely wasted in a single player game. 2. Starting paragon can introduce an overwhelming number of powers to a new player of any standard class...

DM Empowerment vs. Player Entitlement - Is this really that prevalent?

I agree that pcs should be given an accurate assessment of the potential consequences of their actions, and the chance to reevaluate if things work differently than they think. I've had issues where players don't understand what 4e status effects mean - immobilized, slowed, dazed - and that...

DM Empowerment vs. Player Entitlement - Is this really that prevalent?

I think there are two separate aspects to the DM vs player conflict. The first is story and the second is rules calls and both can suffer if imbalanced. Players should feel entitled to influence the story. A lot of bad DMs railroad and prevent players from having a meaningful impact on the...

D&D 4E 4e House Rules for Closer to pre-4e feel

I personally don't want to go back to recurring save or die situations and combats with high risk of pc death. My games now have moved past the wargaming roots of DnD where pcs were intended to go down often and quickly rerolled. In games featuring story and regular combat (I have one per...

Is a Wizard the answer for party balance?

A wizard would be good for rituals too. It is great to have a ritual caster in a group.

    Re: Fighter A Go-Go

I personally think that 4e works extremely well in terms of the raw mechanics. It is unfortunate that 5e is likely to toss out a lot of clever and thoughtful mechanics to try and recapture the haters. That said, this thread probably belongs in the DnD next forum.

Help me with a fey-themed adventure

I find that the Lost Girl tv show explains well in a modern sense the difference between light and dark fey and how they are not good or evil in the traditional sense. They also have a lot of monster and plot ideas you could lift.

    Identifying Magic Items

I like the idea of items with drawbacks and I use homebrew items like these. One character has a drug that supercharges magic for an encounter but is addictive. Another item is a potion that induces a berserker rage - more damage but must attack the nearest enemy.

    My Experience with Karma

My guess is this would disadvantage defenders and high hit classes like rogues/avengers. Defenders would get hit more often (as the focus of the majority of attacks). High to hit classes would get proportionately less karma and less need for it as hit quite often as their main class perk.

Essentials line questions, XP, item rewards, resting, food, some general questions.

Once characters get up in level 5+ I ignore the day to day bookkeeping of food, board, drink etc and just have a monthly upkeep cost proportional to a character's lifestyle. They keep track of large sums of money required to pay for expensive rituals (linked portals etc), ritual components...

    The Cost of Using Magic?

This also relates to the Vancian magic argument. Vancian magic spells can be more powerful if you cannot change your spells once memorized and have only a few per day. The currently discussed 5e model of Vancian with some substitution and at will abilities seems wack to me as it removes the...

Are adventures/modules more important than system?

I feel published adventures are essential for new players trying to learn what D&D is all about. I will never buy an adventure - as a DM of 20+ years I have far more fun writing my own. I buy game worlds though as for maps, adventure hooks, and flavor they make the creative process easier for...

D&D Blog - Just Bigger Numbers

I have held my tongue with respect to the poorly written poll questions, but I have to agree they seem designed to get a specific answer rather than insight into play preferences. Often it seems like they are trying to push for the answer of 'I want the option to do anything' support for...

    Identifying Magic Items

Personally I find experimentation tedious, and when I game once a week, I don't want to waste even 15 min a session on trying on a ring and sticking your hand in fire, wishing for something, trying to teleport etc. And D&D is designed for players to get lots of magic items so unless you...

Fighter vs. Wizard - what's your preferred balance of power?

Um, you know that's not how 3E works? Personally I think this is an interesting thread as the imbalance of 3E and the forced equivalence of 4E have both drawn heavy criticism, which makes me think it comes more down to preferred gaming style than one or the other being right. My vote does...

Fighter vs. Wizard - what's your preferred balance of power?

I think that the advantages of balanced classes vs linear fighters quadratic wizards are very group mix and campaign dependent. I know a lot of groups with slow progression that can stay within the 3.5E sweet spot and if you play all martial or all magic using pcs it is again not an issue. In...

Bloodied and why it is cool.

I've taken to having characters not be taking physical damage until they are bloodied to better rationalize quick hp recoveries during a short rest. It is all being winded, scrapes, and close calls. To heal the physical damage taken over the bloodied value requires magic healing (not...

Alternative Rewards: if you use them more than occasionally, how do you do it?

I run an Eberron game and as the culmination of the 4 session adventure with no treasure (from which they spent more money then they got, used magic items), they each got a dragonmark (bonus feat) of their choice. They all said it was the coolest reward they'd ever gotten.

    Question on melee reach feats

I think you might be referring to the fighter power and not the feat called vexing flanker. This power refers to adjacent opponents which in strict rules terms is 1 square, but I guess you could rule otherwise that it can be used against anyone in reach.

Yes, you are right. 1 OA per turn and one immediate action per round.
