    swarm of minions attack!

24 attack rolls sounds like a worst case scenario - for the characters as well as the DM. Sounds like 3 characters who are separated and surrounded by 8 minions each. Or 5 characters, all separated and with their backs to the wall, each being attacked by about 5 minions. Either way, the strikers...

    D&D 4E 4E Liker - anything you worry about?

My worry: with the paired stats that do overlapping jobs and point buy as the default attribute generation method, there will be a lot of people with 3 8s. For instance: lots of unhealthy, stupid, unlikeable rangers.

    Disarming a character from powers?

Worked for Clarence the angel. Was It's a Wonderful Life on the Gygax list of D&D inspirational literature?

    D&D 4E Got to play 4E today

In my mind, Blind Ogre's second clone will always be the "real" blind ogre.

    D&D 4E 4E Dungeon Crawl Classic

Based on the info that's been released about this, I have to say I'm disappointed. I think Goodman Games is making a mistake in releasing their 4e material in a tiny thumbnail format. Sure, there might be human-sized material in there too, but if so, why haven't they previewed it yet? It just...

The Call of the World Builder

4e has a story team, and they have said that they are trying to make a place in the world and a story for the various monsters. Seems like it's too early to be disappointed.

The Call of the World Builder

I don't know if ALL the world builders are annoyed. There are definitely a vocal minority who tend to dominate threads. I'm a "simulationist" - heck, I've mapped out ocean currents. But I recognize that d&d rules are a bad model for reality, and, when the PCs are offstage, the world tends to...

    D&D 4E Sandbox game: should I 4e?

"5 or 6... must be minions!" ;-) I think it's a great idea though. You could also adopt JoT's recent house rule, "PCs can always flee". Then you can throw whatever you want at the PCs regardless of level. You could get some boring passages though: DM: In the distance you see a (rolls) red...

Monsters are more than their stats

When Benevolus the Just makes his saving throw, shaking off the 6-second Dominate effect, and realizes he has just proposed to Succubina, what will he do? This sort of ties into my question above about what happens when Charm wears off. He might just decide it was a rash, impulsive decision...

D&D 4E Standing Guard in 4e...no rest for you?

I hope extended rests can be interrupted - your point is well taken. Also, in 3e, when camps were attacked, there was this feeling of "let's let the casters sleep through the attack if we can" that, in my mind, didn't seriously add to the fun. I'd like that to be absent from 4e.

Monsters are more than their stats

I think this is a great point. I'm still not convinced that succubi need any more charm magic than they already have, though. In fact, I think the succubus would be better served by some sort of information-gathering ritual (for blackmail, manipulation, finding out what the king's "type" is)...

Monsters are more than their stats

If your outsider has permanent charm and dominate abilities, why have it be a good-looking female at all?

    D&D 4E What are HPs in 4E?

In 4e, hit points are a gamist concept. It's like the designers are making D&D into a glorified minis game. Sure it leads to ease of play, but it totally breaks any attempt at suspension of disbelief. So, no change from earlier editions.

Monsters are more than their stats

Somewhere in the thread people got the idea that "4e has no fluff". This is clearly false. 4e has a story team that is building tons of fluff - more than ever before since 1e, I bet. (Some people like this new fluff and some do not, but that's another issue.) The main issue is "4e has no...

    DMG Excerpt: Customizing Monsters

It's not actually that it doesn't have a + weapon, it's that it doesn't matter if it has a + weapon. After the battle, when the players are looting the corpses, the DM can say, "It, uh... has a +2 sword." Or he can decide to give that same treasure value in coins instead. At level 15, both...

Magical Threshold for PCs: Some Crunch, Some Fluff

Heck, make all items memory items. This fits in really well with natural human superstition. Will having Jimi Hendrix's guitar make us a better guitarist? Of course nnnn...well, we kinda secretly think it will. If you somehow recover the normal arrow that critted the ancient dragon to death...

    D&D 4E 4e Monster Manual excerpt

Ah, the danger of message boards. They have a number of perils, including making a lot of problems seem important that might not come up in actual play. Also making you angry at strangers, which can't be good for your chi.
