    Fighter Slayer preview

"Berserker's Charge"... "Unfettered Fury"... this slayer guy is practically a barbarian. I picture him looking kind of Viking-y. Maybe something like this...

    Fighter Slayer preview

Maybe defender-leaning-towards striker. Which is good: a lot of people who play fighters want to hit things hard, not just coddle the squishy characters. Note that, as one could have predicted, they have scale proficiency only. Plate is reserved for knights (the defense specialists).

    Fighter Slayer preview

Dungeons & Dragons Roleplaying Game Official Home Page - Article (Fighter Preview, Part 2) The Weapon Talent is a +1 bonus to ALL weapon attacks, which is a nice upgrade. Also, "You gain a bonus to the damage rolls of weapon attacks. The bonus equals your Dexterity modifier." Pretty strong...

Gen Con: Slavicsek says core books will continue to be published, other tidbits

They also mentioned: -WotC is unlikely to be changing all the MM1 monsters to fit with the new power levels in the MM3, but will likely be coming out with some guidelines to adjust your MM1 monsters some time in the future. -Someone asked about Con/Int races and martial controllers: WotC has...

Gen Con: Slavicsek says core books will continue to be published, other tidbits

We went to the "Gen Con Design & Development: Presented by D&D Insider" talk. Bill Slavicsek was among the presenters. There were some answers about Essentials as well as other miscellaneous future-plans comments: 1. Bill Slavicsek confirms that Essentials will not be replacing the PHB 1. They...

Oh, hey. Updated Balor in Demonomicon

The new balor damage is exactly what I'd predict from their mm3 damage model. I've calculated the new average monster at-will damage as an easy-to-remember 8+level. (brutes do 25% extra damage). I'd expect a level 27 brute to do (8+27)*1.25=43.75 damage. 6d10+11 is 44 damage. at...

How Essentials and beyond is a ...zucchini...

Given that they make more fun monsters now, I'm not sure what Wiz can do to please everybody. Make a new book? That's making people pay for errata. Publish free errata? It seems to upset people (for whatever reason) when free errata is published. I guess they could publish revised MM1s and give...

D&D 4E No more reprints of the 4E core books?

    >"Is Essentials 4.5?" arguments need to be banned just like edition wars were. Are you kidding? All these threads just contribute to the Spectacle! It's like watching 10 train wrecks at once!

Doing the Monster Math for the original MM

As far as I can tell, another way to scale MM1 monster damage is to add 1 damage per every two monster levels. Average at-will damage used to be about 8 + 1/2 level. Now it's 8 + level. I spot checked monsters of various levels in MM3 and this seems to work pretty universally.

    Mazes and Monsters retro clone

I'm reverse-engineering the Mazes and Monsters RPG rules, using the movie as a primary source. Because the movie's creator Rona Jaffe knew so little about D&D, her rules are AMAZING. For instance: Mazes and Monsters seems to use ONLY THE D12 Mazes and Monsters: retro clone « Blog of Holding

    The Essentials Fighter

I think the words "corner case" have already been mentioned in this thread so I won't mention "corner case" again after the next time I say "corner case". corner case From my corner, it looks like a case where "different builds are different and have different pluses and minuses." In this...

    Essentials replacing Hardbacks?

I would guess that nothing will go out of print, but that wotc will no longer expect that stores should stock phb, mm, and dmg. The new stuff will "form the baseline experience for the roleplaying game moving forward." In other words: you will probably be able to buy the older books at your...

Gygax is coming back to even the score with Lorraine Williams? That would be SO AWESOME.

    The Essential Knight

Ah, major spoiler from mearls! Battle Guardian: As an opportunity action, when a thief inside the fighter's Defender Aura makes an attack which does not include the fighter, the fighter may whirl around, grab the thief by the hand, and slam him into a bar. The bar must also be within the...

    Essentials Mage: Observations

Even if used as intended, Hypnotism is really thematic for jedi-style enchanter wizards. It actually makes me want to play a wizard for the first time in years. So different from yet another attack with a push effect. Underpowered though? The fact that it requires two attack rolls to do any...

Small annoyances that could / should be finally fixed with the Essentials

Nice! then that feat could be given as a bonus feat to all the Essentials classes.

Small annoyances that could / should be finally fixed with the Essentials

These would all be good ideas for 4.5, but I think (hope?) Essentials will be more focused than that. If the priorities of Essentials are really to provide a simpler experience for n00bs, while not breaking compatibility, some of these changes wouldn't be appropriate. - Clerics can use the...

Dark Sun Preview at Pax East

It was very Spartacusy: especially the "Will we betray each other in the arena, or team up against our common enemy?" plot point. Also, I got a papercut from one of the character sheets, and there was a bullet-time fountain of CGI blood. I was surprised that the Defiler feature only hurt...

Dark Sun Preview at Pax East

We played in a Dark Sun delve at PAX, fighting, among other enemies, a savage halfling and some githyanki guards. I grabbed a couple of the 1st-level pregen character sheets (human warlock and goliath fighter) and noted a few fun Dark Sun-specific rules. Some highlights: -Wacky critical fumble...
