D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

Of course, maybe we shouldn't be asking for a roll to open the lock in the first place. I don't know about you, but most of the time if you fail to open a lock, you just try again. Most locks don't break or summon guards if you fail to open them in the real world...

    D&D 5E (2024) Who has sign language?

Oh really? Hey that's cool, I didn't know about that.

    D&D 5E (2024) Who has sign language?

Canonically, I think only Drow have a sign language.

D&D 5E (2024) It Is 2025 And Save Or Suck Spells Still Suck (the fun out of the game)

There should be a caveat here, I think. Bad guys have to survive contact with the PC's in order to react to their efforts. Now maybe other campaigns are different, but in the ones I play in, there aren't often survivors to tell the tale... Plus, how quickly one can react is questionable. If...

    Should PCs Be Exceptional?

Ok, I have to ask. What is the definition of "exceptional" that this thread is working with? Are we talking "higher stats/more advantages than NPC's" or "have an important role in the world"? My vote was based on the latter, not the former- in my games, the players are generally not some...

D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

Man this conversation moves fast. The way I see random encounters, the NPC's don't appear from nowhere- they're present in the area, but whether or not they'd be in a given place at a given moment is dependent on factors the PC's might not be aware of. Everyone has a routine, they don't just...

    Who’s your best A-Team?

As a Banacek fan, I have to go with Hannibal.

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

Oh, this is one I missed- we allowed Dwarven Diviner Wizards (based on a misprint in one version of the 2e PHB), which eventually was expanded to "anyone can be a Diviner Wizard". Rarely invoked, however.

D&D 5E (2024) It Is 2025 And Save Or Suck Spells Still Suck (the fun out of the game)

No, but mostly because I've specialized in area control spells, to the point that, when faced with a single boss, I usually toss out cantrip attacks, lol. It comes from playing other versions of the game, where I would get really annoyed when I cast a spell and the target saves and that's it...

D&D 5E (2024) It Is 2025 And Save Or Suck Spells Still Suck (the fun out of the game)

It's bad when it only gives you a +2 save against a fairly mean spell though! I was expecting a higher Con and/or save proficiency to make a creature like that fairly immune to a certain type of spell and I was dead wrong. It really took until I started DMing 5e to realize how many creatures...

D&D General Liquids in Bag of Holding or Portable Hole?

Look, if a Henchman is living inside my Bag of Holding, he's a denizen, not a citizen if I don't want him there!

Hey, rations are hard to come by in other dimensions!

Yeah, only Conan and Fafhrd are allowed to do that!

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

This really is true. The 1e Barbarian has most of the survival abilities people seem to associate with the Ranger archetype. Hm. Now I wish I could play with my old group and see what they think of a multiclassed Ranger/Barbarian...

D&D 5E (2024) It Is 2025 And Save Or Suck Spells Still Suck (the fun out of the game)

This is a fair point. If you're fighting several foes and you Banish a brute so you can focus on the BBEG, is that really foul play? Part of the problem, as I see it, is that many NPC's and monsters lack saving throw proficiencies. I think that if PC's get 2 proficiencies, NPC's should as...

    D&D General Have Some Class

The answer, apparently, is that the spell is super awesome, lol. I convinced my DM to let it be a Ritual. Then I actually managed to have time to cast it before a fight with some Undead and left the DM twitching. It ceased to be a Ritual afterwards.

    D&D General Have Some Class

I made a Barbarian/Oracle so I could use Charisma instead of Dex for AC and they called me a power gamer (?). I was just trying to be a Frank Frazetta classic!

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

2e's ability to fairly easily swipe anything from previous versions of the game without much fuss was certainly peak. It's sad that's been lost, but I'm not sure how you'd maintain that (do I dare say it? I do!) "backwards compatibility" without keeping the game from being able to evolve.*...

    D&D General Have Some Class

I hope so- I only have the preview so I have no idea what the higher level abilities are like. I wasn't sure if PB per day Banners and Cha mod per day Stratagems would be enough to scratch my love of tactical combat (especially compared to the Weapon Master's bag of tricks!).

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

As far as the 1e Thief goes, I've made (too many) posts discussing how terrible it can be if you hew closely to RAW. Gary is particularly harsh when discussing the limits of Thieving abilities in the DMG. However, I do have a much cooler alternative, the Scout from Dragon 161! It mixes the...
