D&D 5E (2024) DMG 2024: Is The Sandbox Campaign Dead?

I was just talking about my games; there has never been any demand to have detailed business dealings from my players. I'm sure there are many ways to play the game.

D&D 5E (2024) DMG 2024: Is The Sandbox Campaign Dead?

I'm not getting involved in this one way or another, the P&P reference sounded familiar so I thought I'd share. I have had players do some minimal business stuff in my games, but it's always been more something that explains what they're doing in their downtime than anything. So it's never...

D&D 5E (2024) DMG 2024: Is The Sandbox Campaign Dead?

While I don't care one way or another whether people have their PCs run businesses, I believe P&P was a reference to this

D&D 5E (2024) DMG 2024: Is The Sandbox Campaign Dead?

I had a player drop my game because they wanted to "explore their dark side" and I don't allow evil PCs. Not sure I would ever want to play a game with someone "exploring" being a sociopath. To each their own I guess.

You aren't exactly the target market though, then again neither am I. Their target market have probably never seen graph paper.

D&D 5E (2024) DMG 2024: Is The Sandbox Campaign Dead?

There's still good material in the DMG even if it is aimed at new DMs. It's just not the best use of resources to put random tables in there. I keep hoping the encounter builder in DDB will get out of beta at some point and put together some tools others have slapped together. Then make it...

D&D 5E (2024) DMG 2024: Is The Sandbox Campaign Dead?

Part of this debate has been about some of the things the DMG no longer provides. Your comment on randomly generated dungeons is a good example of something we simply don't need any more. If I want to randomly generate a dungeon they are just a quick search away. So the generators exist...

D&D 5E (2024) DMG 2024: Is The Sandbox Campaign Dead?

Which of course goes back to what a sandbox is. :) Having multiple plot threads that they can follow is not a linear game but it depends on who you ask for a definition of sandbox because one definition is that the only goals are the goals set exclusively by the players. But what if it's...

D&D 5E (2024) DMG 2024: Is The Sandbox Campaign Dead?

To me it's not "make a character interested" it's more "Are you guys interested in X and if so, make a character that is also interested." Players are always welcome to make suggestions as well but it goes both ways, I have to be interested in their suggestion as well.

D&D 5E (2014) Can you hear the audible version of the Alarm spell if you are more than 60 feet away?

Kind of like if a tree falls on a bard mime in a forest does anybody care ... wait that's not it ... hmm. Dumb analogy anyway. It could be any number of things including the sound starting directly in the minds of the recipient to the magic vibrating the eardrum of everyone in the area. It...

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

My favorite was Nicholas Alkemade. In WW II the bomber he was in was hit by enemy fire and caught on fire. He was alone in his turret in the back of the plane, surrounded by fire to the point that his rubber oxygen mask was starting to melt. His parachute? Also on fire. So he jumped out of...

D&D 5E (2024) DMG 2024: Is The Sandbox Campaign Dead?

One of the reasons I never do world ending campaigns is because I never assume the PCs are going to win. They always have a chance to come out on top, and usually a pretty good one, but it's not guaranteed.

D&D 5E (2024) DMG 2024: Is The Sandbox Campaign Dead?

I'd define a railroad as the DM forcing the sequence of play and results without considering the words and deeds of the characters or the desires of the players. That's different from a linear game where the DM can still react to the input from the players (directly or via character), although...

D&D 5E (2024) DMG 2024: Is The Sandbox Campaign Dead?

People have been trying to bring order to the world by creating categories and labels and then using those to define things since the dawn of time. Sometimes it's useful but when it comes to style of play? I think there's just too many gray areas outside of the extremes. Is a sandbox about the...

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

People have fallen tens of thousands of feet and survived so falling out of a Rollercoaster should be a piece of cake! ;)

I'd be surprised if it's even there. But approximately 10 minutes after we have the MM online somebody will make one with a list of monsters and CR by filtering and copying the web page.

D&D General Players: Do You Care From Whence Your DM Gets His Monsters/Challenges?

If I grab a monster from some other source I typically do a quick double check to see if things are out of line with more standard monsters (I use Monster CR on a Card). But that's true of any source and I'm assuming it will be the same with the new MM. Even for published 3PP like Tome of...

D&D 5E (2024) DMG 2024: Is The Sandbox Campaign Dead?

Then we're in the same boat when it comes to what is required for qualifying as a sandbox. I don't know why random encounter charts are a requirement, even if I can see why they might be handy for some people.
