Mainstream News Discovers D&D's Species Terminology Change

My dwarven wizard was plenty effective even though he didn't start with a +2 to intelligence. That 5% difference on some of his spells wasn't a big deal. At the same time it made him stand out as different and unique. It never, ever, totally nerfed a build. We played with a guy back in 3.5 that...

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

And if wishes were horses, beggars would fly. The opinion of any one individual, especially one unlikely to ever purchase anything from WotC, is never ever going to change anything. This forum likely barely registers on WotC radar, do you really think the opinions of one poster could ever...

D&D General Should the DM roll in the open?

If I was really concerned about the newbie player that just had their first character killed I'd explain a couple of things. First while death in my campaign is usually fairly rare it can happen. Second because this is your first character you should normally be dead here and because you're...

Mainstream News Discovers D&D's Species Terminology Change

As I stated over in the other thread, I think changing from race to species makes sense. First, race is primarily a social construct with little basis in biology. In addition nobody is ever going to think that a human and a dragonborn (or tabaxi or tortle, etc.) are the same species. People...

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

I run campaigns up to 20 and have never had an issue challenging groups. On the other hand death is not the only risk in the game and honestly I find near defeat, or near death, much more enjoyable. Then again, people are rarely brought back from death in my campaign world so death is almost...

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

The DM making the final call on rules as default has always been part of the game and does not make them a "dictator". I think giving the DM latitude to tweak the rules is one of the main reasons why 5E succeeded where 4E did not, it was also an issue with 3. This whole idea that everyone...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D 2024 Player's Handbook Reviews

Bah, humbug! You young wippersnappers have it easy. Back in the day dwarves were fighting men, hobbits (yes hobbits!) were thieves and if you wanted to do both fighting stuff and magic ya had to be an elf! Now get off my lawn!

Have species ever been anything other than humans with decorations?

D&D General The New York Times on D&D

I guess we'll never really know the depth of the naysayers, but when the new books sold more than anything else ever has it is an indicator that the 2024 release was well received. Some people didn't upgrade for a variety of reasons, from wanting to finish an existing campaign to not thinking...

But it also seems to give an outsized voice to the vocal minority complaining about the changes for those that don't know much about the game.

Ugh RK has some ... interesting perspectives. Trying to make the change from race to species a huge issue? It makes more sense to me because race, while largely being a social construct with no biological basis, also only really applies to humans. Humans may share many traits with dragonborn...

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

I don't do it for narrative reasons. A story may emerge from play but I'm not telling a story, therefore there's no narrative. That's my story I'm sticking to it. 🤷

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

Skipping time is not done for narrative reasons. It's done because we have limited time at the game table. But this, like many topics on this forum, seem to be just arguing semantics for no real reason.

D&D 5E (2024) "D&D Monster Manual 2025 is going to pack a serious punch thanks to a family of monsters descended from gods, and frankly I’m terrified"(Gamesradar)

I also never read it to mean that you automatically retired, just that you could if you wanted to do so. It was also not a requirement to build a keep, it was just an option. In the rare cases where I got PCs to that level, the adventures just included things like defending your keep or having...

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

I thought I was clear on what I was saying. Maybe not. 🤷‍♂️ It would be impossible from a practical standpoint to have an RPG that spans the amount of time my typical D&D campaigns span. Could you in theory have a game where you played a specific character for a day or so like the old 24 TV...

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

Do any games actually do that? You would have to limit the entire "campaign" to what you can be played contiguously at the table. Even assuming you did something like the old 24 TV show where every episode was a real time accounting of what went on. But even then, there was plenty of time were...

The image has the tarrasque standing on it's hind feet and has long fingers, not forefeet. Am I missing something? In any case, I prefer a breath weapon. I made it radiant since there is no "Atomic" energy type.

That's why we, as DMs, needed to figure out how much damage a medium sized cottage does when thrown as an improvised attack. Or give it Godzilla's breath weapon like I did.

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

So you do play minute-by-minute? Everyone sits around the table pretending to sleep because their characters are? Do you RP going to the latrine? A) I doubt it for a game that only spans a few hours of a character's life. B) Why the **** would you? EDIT: unless of course you are...
