D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

Or if it's my group, they all just look at me dumbfounded in the last session 0 and basically said "You're creative, you figure out what all the plot hooks are!" :cautious:

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

I was responding to you saying that "speedrunning through all the unimportant times in order to focus on the important ones, is a narrative conceit." I disagree. There are plenty of reasons to "speedrun" that have nothing to do with narrative conceit or verisimilitude. As a game we always skip...

D&D General Should the DM roll in the open?

I don't fudge dice and roll attacks and whatnot out in the open. On the other hand I do design the encounters, make decisions for the monsters, decide what tactics I'm going to use. I recently ran a game where some heavy-hitting giants could have taken out a PC but instead of focusing fire they...

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

It has nothing to do with verisimilitude. There are going to be times when no input is needed from the players. If there are no decisions to be made, no RP opportunities, we skip it. I regularly narrate long distance travel, only to get into details when the group comes across an interesting...

D&D General Should the DM roll in the open?

I was thinking about this and realized that I have another reason for not wanting to hide my rolls. I dislike using a DM screen, it always makes me feel like there's a separation between me and my players. Like I'm trying to set myself apart. The implication feels to me that I'm putting...

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

It's a game. In world reality has little to do with the experience at the table. I rarely throw in false rumors and if I do it's for a reason. On the other hand there will frequently be long stretches of boredom and downtime but it will only take a short time in game. I don't see much difference.

D&D 5E (2024) "D&D Monster Manual 2025 is going to pack a serious punch thanks to a family of monsters descended from gods, and frankly I’m terrified"(Gamesradar)

It will be interesting how they set them up. I've considered using titans but give them weak spots you can attack. Stabbing their toe does nothing, instead do phased fights like you said.

D&D General Should the DM roll in the open?

It does add to the suspense, in a fun way. I actually picked it up from another DM. I will indicate if it gets to the point that they stabilize or die. Players rarely let it get to that point, that's kind of the point.

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Beyond Thanks Community

There have always been things that were limited access. We used to have Dragon and Dungeon magazines and of course there have always been non core books. I don't see how the delivery mechanism matters much. But as long as there is a demand for offline products and they are profitable, they will...

D&D General Should the DM roll in the open?

I roll out in the open for many things, but not all. Attacks and damage (on a crit) out in the open. Opposed roles, some enemy saves and PC death saves? Hidden. It's not that I fudge, it's because I don't necessarily want to reveal information. The player suspects an NPC of lying and they're...

WotC How much does Hasbro / WotC impact your feelings towards D&D?

I thought that was primarily no AI for art. In theory we could get an AI DM. Would that really be a bad thing though? I guess a few professional DMs could have some competition but they're a tiny minority compared to the number of people who could benefit from such a thing. But whether or not...

WotC How much does Hasbro / WotC impact your feelings towards D&D?

Best friend? Nah. Evil Inc? Also nah. Someone can not care much about a policy that was rolled back based on feedback, still like the product that a company produces, and not think a corporation gives a fig about me as an individual. No company of any significant size is my best friend...

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

I've seen much the same, death is rare but close calls are relatively common. I roll in the open for attacks, hide the rolls for death saves so people don't know how long they have to heal an unconscious PC. I just ran a game over the weekend where I had one PC at 0 and another 2 at single...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 edition questions

I haven't had an issue challenging PCs, although we're only level 5 so far. But my last game had 2 PCs in single digits and another unconscious at one point. Of course I also threw two hill giant sergeants (CR 7) and a half dozen orcs (2 were Eyes of Gruumsh, which was only a medium encounter...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Monster Manual (2025)

Could mean we're going to get templates that can be added to any monster for customization. It would make the process of increasing CR of monsters easier for a lot of people. You may think all the goblins are a pushover, but you just haven't goblin Nug Nug, The Destroyer
