    Skill Challenges: Bringing the Awesome

I'd go a couple of ways with it. First, I doubt I'd give the players the option to choose the difficulty. Sure, there's Easy/Normal/High. But to have a player say something like "I'm going to triple somersault up to the roof, Easy difficulty" just doesn't sit right with me. And it bugged me in...

D&D 4E My first 4e experience: Escape from Sembia demo in Austin, TX

I'm not sure if NPC classes will be in 4e or not. As far as monsters 3-4 levels higher not being that strong... I think it's better to clarify that monsters 3-4 levels higher don't necessarily equate to a TPK. They're still very tough by comparison -- just not game ending like that might be in 3e.

Well I went to the Game Demo! Did Escape from Sembia. My thoughts

Yup. That's certainly not driving distance. :D

D&D 4E My first 4e experience: Escape from Sembia demo in Austin, TX

It did go well but that is a bummer. I would've given you the rockstar treatment if you were there. Ari 'freakin' Marmell. w00t! Sorry, it's just my at-will "Fanboi Radiant Close 1" ability. I swear I have few other abilities so creepy or offputting. It was pretty much what the RPGA...

Well I went to the Game Demo! Did Escape from Sembia. My thoughts

Huzzah! So did we. Any chance you were at the Austin, TX, Dragon's Lair demo? If so, I was the Halfling Paladin in the 10:30am game. You know, the one who spent most of the fights knocked prone and tried to pray his way out of the city. (Stupid Tymora! That's it! I'm becoming a Paladin of...

D&D 4E My first 4e experience: Escape from Sembia demo in Austin, TX

Oh TOTALLY. This really blew my mind because we all felt like we were more effective than in previous editions but (at the same time) those city-guards just kept coming at us. I would say that first combat was a humbling experience. Hence the "Action Hero" thing? Not so much. :heh:

D&D 4E My first 4e experience: Escape from Sembia demo in Austin, TX

Those cards sound like a great idea. Anything to help with that bookkeeping is a win in my eyes. That said, I think it's better than the fixed durations in 3e. But still, with more combatants per combat, the end result was zero sum for me. And Narr is an abbreviation of Narrativism. That whole...

Yeah. Sorry about that. I kept proofreading and making edits. I got a bit OCD with it. :o

D&D 4E My first 4e experience: Escape from Sembia demo in Austin, TX

A tinkerer by nature... What I would houserule: Levels of Success instead of pass/fail . Some see no need. Fair enough. But to me they make all the difference. Gridless. For anyone in doubt if Mearls brings the awesome, read his gridless post. Johnathan Tweet's Static Damage rules. I did it...

D&D 4E My first 4e experience: Escape from Sembia demo in Austin, TX

So how was it? So how was it? Pretty good. Most, if not all, of my questions were answered in the demo and I learned quite a bit more. I also got to sit right next to the DM, so I was able to keep a careful eye on what he was doing and how involved it was. Here's what I came away with: The...

D&D 4E My first 4e experience: Escape from Sembia demo in Austin, TX

Earlier today I participated in a 4e demo at Dragon's Lair in Austin, TX. First off, I'd like to say thanks to Brian (I didn't catch his last name) for going out of his way to run an entire day's worth of 4e demos. If you're reading this, know that it was greatly appreciated and I think you did...

D&D 4E My First 4E Game: Disappointing. Yours? (UPDATED with player feedback)

Actually, I should be the one thanking you, Tewligan. I was fairly certain there was a precedent for that but I couldn't recall it off the top of my head. Thanks for sharing that. That leaves the OP with only 2 points of possible similarity -- one of which I basically gave him because I agreed...

    Sequels to Successes

Fair enough. Perhaps my wording came across too strongly in that post. I tend to see some of the developer's comments as aimed at 3e as a whole. For example, a large portion of Bill S' speech announcing 4e and the youtube video where the chronology of D&D was presented. But that can be a...

    Sequels to Successes

I'm definitely not a 4e-hater. But I gotta agree with the gist of the OP. Since it's announcement, the 4e team has flat out ridiculed many aspects of older editions (grappling, having nothing to do in combat, etc). And I agree that's just short-sighted marketing. While it was enough to perk...

D&D 4E My First 4E Game: Disappointing. Yours? (UPDATED with player feedback)

Hi Derren: For the sake of not getting mired in the subjective vs. objective, analogy vs. not, yadda yadda that could seriously just bog us down into semantics. Let's assume, for the sake of getting on with the matter, that you're right about all the similarities between MMOs and D&D 4e. But...

D&D 4E My First 4E Game: Disappointing. Yours? (UPDATED with player feedback)

At least he's made it as far as the Rules Compendium. ;) Some guys stopped after AD&D: Skills & Powers. Then it should totally be clear who needs to be sold on the idea. Don't upsell just yet. Wait until you've had time to digest the rules after they come out. That's a problem with this...

D&D 4E My First 4E Game: Disappointing. Yours? (UPDATED with player feedback)

Don't feel bad. I couldn't sell Savage Worlds to my group back in Florida either. They balked at the very idea. Called it a "war game". Now, I hear they play it (and Mutants & Masterminds) almost exclusively. Both games I tried to get them hooked on. Both games that they balked at. But try and...

D&D 4E My First 4E Game: Disappointing. Yours? (UPDATED with player feedback)

I couldn't give a definitive opinion because I tend not to play computer games. But from what I've played, I'll have to say the whole debate strikes me as a chicken-before-the-egg situation. I mean, is 4e more like an MMORPG because the "bosses" get tougher to kill when they get close to dying...

D&D 4E My First 4E Game: Disappointing. Yours? (UPDATED with player feedback)

From reading their comments, I'd say they were in the mood for more of the same. ;) It also sounds like these guys are an existing group of friends for whom you have just started DMing. That can be a pretty tough situation if you are the newcomer to the group. A couple of their comments also...

    Gnomes in 4th edition? Maybe...

Seems like it was mentioned in one of the podcasts too. I know for sure that the MM will have rules to play Drow and Gnome races. I've read/heard as much from official WotC sources. But the races in the MM won't be as robust as official races -- which the Drow become in FR. Presumably, the...
