With all these guns .. Where are the bullets?

    1) 2) I understand the desire for simplicity, but if you don't have some sort of penalty why wouldn't I always load Glazer ammo and get the extra damage bump ? Frangible ammo runs $15 for a box of 50 (DC 4)? That is essentially the same as normal ammo in d20 terms. 3) It is not...

With all these guns .. Where are the bullets?

Obviously. It seems to me you should at least impose a penalty to the to hit roll if the target is wearing armor when firing Glaser ammunition. I would prefer to see a negation of 2 points of armor bonus when firing AP ammo than adding +2 to hit against armored targets.

    D20 Fallout Tactics conversion question

This seems a little generous to me. I am not an expert here by any means, but I believe that the spread of a shotgun is more like 1” / yard. If you are going to affect two 5’x5’ squares I would think that you need at least a 5’ spread (or 60”). At 1” / yard that means you get a 60” spread at...

With all these guns .. Where are the bullets?

Explosive ammo is generally only worthwhile in larger caliber ammunition (i.e. not your pistol and rifle ammunition). The trade-offs are too great. You would be better off using a grenade launcher! Of course, you might be concerned with collateral damage. :] Also, expense is a big factor...

Where you live: Gamer Paradise or Gamer Wasteland?

Las Cruces seems to be a gamer wasteland as well. A very insular gaming community as far as I can tell. I assume you go to COAS as that is the only place I can find any gaming material. They do have a lot of old & out of stock games.

    Sociopathic PCs -- an epidemic?

You do realize that most PC parties are a band of wandering sociopaths? :] Place PCs in context: They are mercenaries (not high on the social scale). They are tomb robbers (generally detested). They commit genocide (not particular well adjusted). They loot bodies for treasure (not much ties...

Ideas for "Thief" (video game) style campaign

You might also look at some more modern sources for inspiration. The first is the Shadowrun game. The second is the Mission Impossible TV series. Both settings require complex planning to achieve the team's objectives. You might also look at "It takes a Thief" and perhaps "The Saint". I...

    Cut-scenes?

I have yet to see a GM pull off a cut-scene properly. As a player you are no longer playing, you are watching the GM play with himself. ;) I have played in a game with co-GMs where they acted out the cut-scene. It too fell flat. I haven't seen the group scripted cut-scene. That might...

    Dice Alternatives in Unearthed Arcana

    Ok, let’s take your example. Normal: d20 + 0 >= 10 yields a 55% chance to hit. (10-20 or 11/20) As a Defense Roll: Condition: 1 d20 + 0 > 11 yields a miss or the attacker hits on a 1-11 or 11/20. Condition: 2 d20 + 0 >= 12 yields the same result. The book result is incorrect in stating...

    Dice Alternatives in Unearthed Arcana

I like this variant myself and tried it way before UA was published. The real trick is breaking yourself of the habit of rolling the attack roll. The only problem is rolling for damage is slightly awkward since I usually roll both the attack and damage rolls together. It is 11. He is just...

New Setting Idea from CNN... a modern earth out of oil.

The Saudi Arabian oil fields are the largest and the easiest to exploit. Other sources of oil are not economical until crude reaches $40+ per barrel. However, once all of the large sources of oil are gone it will not be economic to use oil for automobiles (at least for most people). The end...

    G/N/S epiphany

And about as useful as :):):):) on a boar hog. :D When used to classify games it depends upon the perspective of the person doing the classification. I have seen arguments ad naseum from different g/n/s supporters trying to classify a given game. And when applied to gamers it is totally...

Low magic vs. magic as a plot device

It sounds to me like you are using the wrong game system. D&D is designed for high fantasy magical settings. d20 modern seems much better for low magic settings (if you want to stick with d20). Joshua have you looked at Ron Edward's Sorceror ? It sounds like a better system for modeling the...

XP Cost to use a Magical Item

I also disagree with this idea. D&D is not really designed to use XP as an expendable resource (despite its use in item creation – something I don’t believe the designers really thought through). Other games like Storyteller, Shadowrun/Earthdawn, and GURPS are built to use XP as an expendable...

The 5+ Styles of DMing: Contrasted/Compared/Mocked

What the sadist and winger have in common is the quality of play from the player's perspective. I have seen winger do a good job on one shots. But over the course of several sessions, the winger’s game feels like the sadist’s game – arbitrary and inconsistent. Or they turn into roll-playing...

The 5+ Styles of DMing: Contrasted/Compared/Mocked

I see. The order of the intervening stages is not hard and fast -- just my observation of myself and others through out my gaming career. I have seen some GMs skip stages. I have also seen GMs revert depending upon the players he had.

How to Deal with a difficult DM?

I believe that it is important to talk with the GM. Take the GM out for a pint and give him/her constructive feedback. The GM may know that your are not having fun, but may not know why. If the GM is genuinely interested in everyone having a good time at the table, he will listen to your...

Is Railroading ever a good tactic?

Of course, you could talk to your players and find out why they aren't interested in pursuing any of your hooks. Perhaps they would rather be doing something else.
