    D&D 5E (2014) 5e - Just Missing the Mark

This sounds like a good supplement you could create for the community.

Why deciding to round down multiclassing spellcaster levels was stupid

I don't think this is a given. The basic concepts are more: Combat (Fighter), Social (Bard), Environment (Thief) which match the general types of challenges players face. A D&D wizard can fill any of those roles. Almost all of the classes in D&D are hybrids to some extent. The fourth...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e - Just Missing the Mark

Also, the other odd thing about this. Why are you having to look up rules like this "at the table" don't you do any pre-game prep? You should have a good idea beforehand if jumping, underwater combat, riding, etc. are going to come up in the session. Granted players can do wacky things, but I...

Why deciding to round down multiclassing spellcaster levels was stupid

And you are making just the same leap of logic. I think the onus would be on you to prove that it was a design error and not an intentional choice by the designers. All the OP has shown is the numbers behind the design, not that it is an error. There are many reasons to design it in this way.

What is this die for? (Proficiency dice discussion)

True, but I have found that players tend to be lazy. I use Roll20 and if I call for a roll that isn't something they can just click on the character sheet (i.e., /r 2d8+3) they get confused on how to do it and it slows the game down. I even created macros for my players for simple checks that...

D&D 5E (2014) The Fiddly Bits (That Still Get My Newer Players)

I find the inspiration one interesting. I allow 4 points of inspiration to be used each session. As players roll both their normal die and the advantage/disadvantage die at the same time, they know in advance if inspiration will affect the action. Anyone in the group can claim a point of...

what would you want to see in a revised Weapon Chart?

I will point out that Weapons speeds that modify initiative are in the rules already. DMG pg. 271

What is this die for? (Proficiency dice discussion)

This just seems like another thing to slow down the game. I have seen too many players have trouble with just basic math, so adding a variable they have to add/subtract just adds more to their calculations. In case you think I am exaggerating on this, just watch a few episodes of Dice, Camera...

The help action is not broken, but Working together is

and So it is a bad rule because you created a house rule that would not apply? Why are you even using skill checks for magic item creation? If you are going to use skill checks it seems like it would take various skill checks mostly to determine progress, not success or failure.

The help action is not broken, but Working together is

The approach I take is to not have a die roll at all and assume it is a 10. So, you want to convince a guard to do something. The DC say 20 Persuasion/Intimidation/Deception check and the point person has a +5 to the roll normally (+2 Prof +3 CHA). That translates to a 15 which would be...

    Wizard vs Cleric concentration item

Given the large amount of Druid spells that require concentration, I would think a Druid would benefit most from a second concentration slot.

    Skills using different ability scores

This seems like a good approach. I know when I ask for a Skill (Ability) that is different than the norm my players tend to grumble a bit. Usually they are Skill (CON) checks. I think it comes from them having to do simple math or something. :)

D&D 5E (2014) yes, this again: Fighters need more non-combat options

By additional rules you mean the rules in the DMG on pg. 244? Last I checked they weren't "additional rules". Not exactly setting. This would be more related to culture and social class. So unless the setting is a mono culture...Also, fighters are the most common occupation in most D&D...

D&D 5E (2014) yes, this again: Fighters need more non-combat options

This is just not true in an ingame sense. I think a lot of this discussion forgets the Social Interaction section in the DMG pg. 244. NPCs have a starting attitude of friendly, indifferent, and hostile. That attitude isn't going to be the same for every PC in the group. In many situations...

    Throw an Object

    A) Not being rude. Trying to understand your argument. B) Your argument only holds for tossing a creature not an object in general, so I don't see how it would differentiate between a halfling throwing a beer keg and a goliath. Jumping rules only take account STR.
  16. W

    Throw an Object

Uh, what? You completely missed my point. A halfing and a goliath can jump the same distance using the current jumping rules. In no way do the jumping rules differentiate between the two races even though the goliath has the Powerful Build trait. So the jumping rules don't seem like a good...

    Throw an Object

In the jumping rules a 20 STR halfling and a 20 STR goliath can jump the same distance unless they are jumping for an object, so I don't see how that models throwing something very well. Instead of a halfling how far can a goliath throw a keg of beer (161 lbs.)?

    Throw an Object

Javelin is 2 lbs, 30/120. 323 ft. Olympic Hammer Throw: 16 lbs record 284 ft. So have the ceiling at 20/60 seems a bit low to me. Again, I am not looking at it from a combat but just trying to hit a 5' on a side square. On the other hand: Caber 135 lbs, looks to be thrown about 20 ft. So...

    Throw an Object

So after a bit of discussion, it looks like the simplest formula would be: distance thrown = maximum carrying capacity / Object Weight * X Where X = 1, 2, or 4 depending upon if it was balanced and aerodynamic. This allows a goliath to be able to throw things a bit further than a character...

    Throw an Object

Has anyone worked a reasonable calculation for throwing objects? I have a goliath character that is always looking to see how far he can throw something, be it an object or another PC. So far he hasn't been looking to use them as thrown weapons. For example, to avoid a trapped stairwell he...
