D&D General Reification versus ludification in 5E/6E

I've been playing D&D for a long while, and I've often seen NPC writeups that do things regular PC's can't. I understand that you feel that this shouldn't be the case, but it's never really been all that important historically. For example:

I'd say it was more fair to say that Monsters don't use PC rules- but unless the 2024 Monster Manual changes it's definition of "monster" to not include basically everything, we're right back where we started. So maybe we should say "NPC's generally don't use PC rules"?

D&D General Reification versus ludification in 5E/6E

I've taken to calling it 5e2024 in discussions. So far, it's evaded any controversy.

Also, thinking about it, the 2e Death Knight's AC is somewhat inexplicable as well. He's not stated as wearing magic armor, nor using a shield (in fact, some Death Knights are equipped with two-handed swords), but, regardless of the quality of his armor, he's got AC 0 and Full Plate by itself...

Death Knights have always been cheaters. Back in 2e, Fireball capped at 10d6, but the Death Knights were still doing 20d6 with their Fireballs!

D&D 5E (2014) Spellcasting Monsters, Spell Slotlessness, Bonus Actions, and Intent

Hard to do when you must kowtow to corporate masters who want increasingly fat wads of cash though.

D&D 5E (2024) Is Counterspell less frustrating now?

Level 10: Spell Breaker You always have the Counterspell and Dispel Magic spell prepared, you can cast Dispel Magic as a Bonus Action, and you can add your Proficiency Bonus to its ability check. If you cast either of the spells with a spell slot, if the spell fails to either counter another...

D&D 5E (2014) When do you short rest?

I use 10 minute short rests but limit characters to 2 per 24 hours, which has worked out well so far.

And if defining hit points is hard, then try defining temporary hit points! At first blush, you might be like "well, it's a magical shield of some kind" until you remember that you can be granted temporary hit points from entirely non-magical sources as well! Somewhat related are effects that...

D&D General Honey, I shrunk the party!

I'm reminded of Shining Force 2 on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive. Partway through the game, you're shrunk and left on a table next to a chessboard. To proceed, you must step onto the chessboard and fight the enemy pieces, who are animated constructs.

D&D General Honey, I shrunk the party!

Once I actually did it, with a trap that cast Mass Reduce Person in 3e, but other than a minor debuff to the melee it wasn't that big a deal. I kind of did it in the old Ravenloft adventure, The Created, where the players had their minds put into tiny marionette bodies, which featured a deadly...

There are ways to cast spells without slots though. A Wand, for example.

D&D General Feats are in. What is the current feel about multiclassing?

Between both campaigns I'm involved in (one as DM and one as a player), I've seen a pure Bard, a pure Fighter, a Fighter/Rogue, a pure Barbarian, a pure Ranger, a pure Wizard, two pure Clerics, and both a multiclassed Monk/Rogue/Fighter and a multiclassed Sorcerer/Warlock. Some people want more...

Dice with character...when is using them cheating?

I actually hate playing on VTT's because (as least on the ones I've used), the results of die rolls are incredibly wonky. Multiple repeated numbers, 8d6 lightning bolts that deal 17 damage, attacks made with advantage that miss multiple times- it's a mess, and the only reason it isn't a...
