D&D General Reification versus ludification in 5E/6E

4e Magic Missile originally required attack rolls. The reaction to this was so heated that the Essentials rewrite made it an effect that did damage automatically (ironically making options that originally improved the spell no longer function).

D&D 5E (2024) Youre All Wrong. Its Not A Martial vs Caster Situation

Are you sure about the Mind Flayer? I'm referring to this. Tentacles. Melee Attack Roll: +7, reach 5 ft. Hit: 22 (4d8 + 4) Psychic damage. If the target is a Medium or smaller creature, it has the Grappled condition (escape DC 14) from all the mind flayer's tentacles, and the target has the...

D&D General Reification versus ludification in 5E/6E

In order to have mass market appeal and to at least provide token support for all of it's potential settings, D&D is at least slightly lore-agnostic. The books will refer to various characters and concepts, but there's not many hard stances I can think of. And when they do put a piece of lore...

D&D General Reification versus ludification in 5E/6E

The idea that there could be hordes of low level characters across the world with the exact same training, regardless of their origin, is also a bit dubious. That'd be as if our world no longer had different chef schools or martial arts styles. We know that this probably isn't true, and not...

D&D 5E (2024) Youre All Wrong. Its Not A Martial vs Caster Situation

Now I've heard that part of the monster redesign was to have more monster abilities that don't even allow saves, like how the new Mind Flayer just automatically grapples and stuns you if it hits with it's Tentacles attack. Going from this, it seems like not much has changed from 2014. Sure...

    D&D 5E (2024) Thoughts on Stealth and D&D2024

It's been so long since I found Stealth to be viable in a TTRPG I don't make characters who rely on it. Even my long-running multiclass 2e Thief character has magic items that augment or supplant his innate stealth, to the point that the ability that gets the most use is Detect Noise! In fact...

D&D General What's your second favorite edition of D&D?

While there are differences, and they are certainly separate games, Pathfinder 1e and D&D 3.5 are very close to one another in preference. I prefer some things about one over the other in about equal measure.

D&D General What's your second favorite edition of D&D?

    D&D 3.5. AD&D 2e would be third.

    D&D 5E (2024) What prof to make Healer's Kits?

I don't think there is a set ability, but it sounds like it should be Medicine.

Yeah I mean, if you don't want to make saving throws all the time, you don't have to.

D&D General Reification versus ludification in 5E/6E

There seems to be some confusion about 5e's definition of a monster.

D&D 5E (2024) Youre All Wrong. Its Not A Martial vs Caster Situation

Once upon a time, Fighters ended up with some of the best saving throws in the game. I don't recall anyone thinking that was a problem (except maybe Wizards, since any spell that said "save (neg.)" started to feel pretty useless after awhile).

D&D General Reification versus ludification in 5E/6E

I'm just thinking about a recent discussion about martials and casters where someone brought up Bladesingers and immediately someone protested with "there are no Bladesingers in 5e2024"*. Oh well, not like people will ever run out of things to argue about, lol. *Outside of UA, at least as of...

D&D General Reification versus ludification in 5E/6E

I mean, that's pretty much true for many campaign settings. Forgotten Realms is lousy with Wizards, it would be hard if nobody was a Wizard. Now if a given NPC has the same abilities as the Wizard class is somewhat up in the air, even if WotC provided a class tag for them. Of course it gets a...

D&D General Reification versus ludification in 5E/6E

This will make "what is RAW, really" quite a question for discussions. You might have to set ground rules in the initial posts, lest you get "well, see, in 5e2024 any 5e content (that wasn't updated) is viable for use, so applicable to this discussion!".

D&D General Reification versus ludification in 5E/6E

The fact that we're not told what the CR of a character built by PC rules is does make it difficult to employ one as an antagonist, however. If I eyeball it, a 1st-level Fighter might be equal to a CR 1/4, but their AC would be quite high. Other classes get a bit stranger- like a 1st-level...
