Or, apparently, even know how to spell Cthulhu.

What do you think the new setting will be, from Ampersand?

I am going to be unapologetic about this. (Not just the above quote, but everyone who felt the need to respond.) My intent wasn't to be 'obnoxious'...it was to simply observe that Ravenloft has a "less superhero" approach to D&D (for most RL gamers) and that 4th edition is all about playing...

Roaring 20s or 40s campaign dnd how?

The title of this thread alone inspired me. A friend and I are going to co-DM 4th edition games in this setting (we chose 1930). The way I described it, it's the noir love-child of Eberron and Shadowrun (specifically the pulp & noir aspects of both settings without the "wahoo" factor of...

What do you think the new setting will be, from Ampersand?

What Dragonblade said. Also, I don't see Ravenloft working well within 4th edition's confines (with it's focus on combat, tactics & minis). Ravenloft requires a bit more....cerebral? storytelling?....approach to roleplaying, and 4th edition is a bit more in the rollplaying camp. (With all due...

D&D 4E How to build encounters in 4e (aka Only you can prevent Grindspace!)

First, as a fledgling DM in 4th edition, this thread will be invaluable as I craft adventures, so...thank you! I'd really enjoy hearing more terrain options and how they'll effect the flow of combat. Heck, it might even be worthwhile to create an additional thread for it if people get inspired..!

    Skill Chellenges - unfun?

Why not take the idea to the next level, then? Ask the players to roll a handful of 20's. Grab their responses. Parse those results into a meaningful dialog, then say, "Here's what happens..." Basically, they roll the physical dice but you seamlessly create the story results behind your side...

Will 4E Eberron be as bad as FR?

I'm relatively sure that's not what Jack's saying. I believe he's saying that if the new FR book was released by WotC similar to, say, the way Eberron was touted with none of your emotional ties and campaign investments, a brand-new setting with no prior history, you might like it better...

Do official adventures follow DMG advice?

Ah, touché on that one! You're right (on a technicality) re: TSR vs. WOTC. I haven't read (or played through) the Paragon tier adventures at all yet, so I can't honestly give an informed opinion. And I'm certainly not pooh-poohing Goodman. I will continue to give them my dollars for...

Are You Using the 4E Forgotten Realms as a Setting?

...And, again, looking at the Grey Box AND the 2nd edition CS boxed set, both which are two feet away from me right now, I can say the exact same thing. Minus the plot hooks.

Do official adventures follow DMG advice?

Yes, I've read both cover to cover. Those two very specifically have poor(er) editing and maps than in 3.x days. Yes, they do seem to have a better lock on the 4th ed rules. YMMV.

Do official adventures follow DMG advice?

...Are we talking about the same WotC? Are we talking about the same pre-published 4th edition adventures? You're actually saying that the 'greats of yesteryear' (see link below for a list) are worse than Keep on the Shadowfell? GROGNARDIA: 30 Greatest D&D Adventures of All Time

Do official adventures follow DMG advice?

That poster was saying that Goodman Games makes great adventures. And while I could very, very solidly stand behind that in 3.x, their recent adventures are suffering from unfamiliarity with 4th edition rules, feeling rushed, editing mistakes, and maps that do not correspond with the room...

Do official adventures follow DMG advice?

That's disingenuous. There are a buttload of great pre-written adventures, as the years of Dungeon Magazine attest to. And that's not counting Ravenloft (I6), Beyond the Barrier Peaks, etc etc etc etc etc. That said, Thunderspire is not very much better than KotS. (This coming from a...

Are You Using the 4E Forgotten Realms as a Setting?

That's pretty weird, as (looking at my 2nd edition FRCS boxed set which is right here next to me) I could say, verbatim, the exact same thing about it back then. Let go of the past. Move on. And seriously, those who don't even own the 4th edition CS book? How can you accurately weigh in on...

Will 4E Eberron be as bad as FR?

Like much in life, it's all in your perspective and your attitude. I agree with Jack 100%--if we didn't have the emotional and intellectual ties to the previous FR incarnations, if this was a setting released entirely independently, I think the reception would be more positive. (Which is not...

[DM clarification] Scrolls--uses other than rituals

I see what you're saying, and while I think it could be made into part of the system, it's a shame it's not currently. No matter. I can work around the issue by going in a different direction than I wanted. Thanks for the replies--and if anyone thinks of a cool way to side-step this, please...
