D&D Blog. Should Fighters get multiple attacks?

I think my problem is that they are going too far in the direction of simplicity, and that I don't think they can get the basic fighter right by stripping it down to just basic attacks. I don't think it needs 4E levels of complexity (in fact, that's not even the ideal), but holding on to some...

D&D Blog. Should Fighters get multiple attacks?

Well, confirmation that they are moving away from the power system across the board and that the Fighter is going back to just doing normal attacks... Ugh, I don't like the idea of "the Fighter you give a new player." They better start talking about that module that makes Fighters interesting...

SoD, how can we accommodate everyone?

I'm a bit confused by your response here, since what you quoted pretty much is my response about how you accommodate both. You accommodate both by holding both to the same standard. If you are using 4E's three death saves mechanic, then all instant death attacks (including things like being...

SoD, how can we accommodate everyone?

I'm not a fan of using Medusa's instant death petrification as a standard for D&D. Really, it makes for a terrible game experience. Either you don't know it's coming, at which point you open a door, Medusa turns around, and everyone is petrified, or you do know it is coming and everyone is 100%...

    Spells: How Many Levels?

I'd prefer to get rid of spell levels entirely, to be honest. Balance all spells at the same level of power, but make them scale and evolve as the caster gains in level.

    Gunslinger in core?

Not sure why the first post mentions Eberron... Guns really wouldn't fit in the basic assumptions of that setting. Isn't it the Forgotten Realms that makes (magical) gunpowder a part of the setting? Anyways, while I'm not sure I want to see gun slinging, I do want to see era-appropriate guns...

D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next Blog - Wizards Like to Roll Dice Too

I suppose they can always make the "Players Roll All The Dice" option from 3E's Unearthed Arcana core for 5E. Enemies have static attack and defense stats. Players roll attacks when they are attacking, and roll saving throws when they are being attacked. That way the player always gets to roll a...

Skeletons and the Need for Bludgeoning Weapons

I'll just echo the idea that this kind of debate is exactly why there should be hacking damage alongside slashing, piercing, and blunt... I also generally favor giving things weaknesses rather than resistances most of the time. In many ways, they are just plain more fun.

D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next Blog - Wizards Like to Roll Dice Too

Making every offensive action an attack against a defense was one of the good ideas of 4E. Having weapon attack be attack rolls and magic attacks be saving throws was just a weird idea in the first place. Preserving that inconsistency out of nostalgia is pointless. Keeping the saving throw...

    D&D 5E (2014) What will 5E's defining sub-system be?

Given all the marketing so far, wouldn't dials or modules be an appropriate answer?

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next Blog - The Fighter

You know, I really like the idea of making a lot of cool feats based off weapons in order to allow to give skilled users of those weapons a lot of cool options. That would be a cool thing to see, something like the Martial equivalent to that Flame Javelin feat that was mentioned in the seminars...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next Blog - The Fighter

The problem with this is that 4E introduced a lot of good, useful stuff that is much more in the realm of "base game" than "tactical combat module". Character creation options, roles, giving characters fun stuff to do, balance, class concepts... Whether you like them or hate them, these are...

    D&D 5E (2014) Should 5e have a "default setting" and cosmology?

That's the right idea, but not quite the list I would pick. Partly because I don't know what Sanctuary is... Also, Eberron is fundamentally too similar to the Greyhawk/Realms baseline to really stand out as the crazy alternate. Something with genuine sci-fi robots, rather than Warforged...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next Blog - The Fighter

I disagree with just about every last thing said in that blog. I disagree so much that it terrifies me. This is like reading historical revisionism... The 3E Fighter was a joke. It was a terrible class. Far from being versatile, it was nothing more than an utter weakling who was encouraged to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Should 5e have a "default setting" and cosmology?

This is undoubtably the best way to do things. I know that D20 Modern made an attempt at this by providing several example settings like Urban Arcana, Shadow Chasers, Genetech, and Agents of PSI (I think these were them...). It helps establish the main rules as setting-independent, introduces to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Should 5e have a "default setting" and cosmology?

Alright, since some people seem a bit unaware of the extent of how bad this can get, and many did not play 4E... 4E does not use a domain system for clerics. Instead, it just uses the deities presented in the PHB. Every Divine class has access to the Channel Divinity class feature, which lets...

    D&D 5E (2014) Magic Item Slots in D&D Next

I must say, I've never seen that one. That's pretty impressive. Not quite as impressive as the attacks that could wipe out the entire cosmos due to dealing more hitpoint damage than the number of atoms in the universe (by several orders of magnitude), but still amazingly elegant. It is strange...

    Detect Magic

I'm fine with any version of detect magic that doesn't lead to the massive amount of effort 3E went to in order to define whether any given thing was magic or not (that was arguably still incomplete). Every last thing had to be defined as Extraordinary or supernatural, the "magicness" of every...

    D&D 5E (2014) Magic Item Slots in D&D Next

No, this is how 3E works. 4E addresses this kind of exploit (which were rampant in 3E) and for the most part removes them completely. There was a lot of rule stupidity in 3E. A lot. Look up Pun Pun or the Omniscificer if you so desire. Creating a being with infinite stats became a 3E subgame.

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next Blog - A Close Call with Negative Hit Points

I'd like to get rid of negative hitpoints. They are one of the roots of the reasons that D&D's death and serious injury rules are so frustratingly bad... Death at zero hitpoints might be worse, but there are certainly better solutions.
