    D&D 5E (2014) Why sleeping shouldn't be a long rest

My changes to rests are: -Add in a “Brief Rest” of 10 minutes duration which only allows expending hit dice. 1 hour is often too long to rest but I wanted characters to be able to recover hp without other resources Short rest 1 hour also recover 1HD per 8 levels 1/Long Rest Long Rest 8hours...

Blog (A5E) Level Up: Spending Gold (At Higher Levels)

I like that there are more and more ideas appearing in this space and look forward to seeing it. Though I think 75k for a T. rex is over the top

    D&D 5E (2014) The Healing Spirit Nerf=Complete Overkill

I’m with Dave2008. If your adventuring day goes encounter (s) short rest encounter (s) short rest encounter (s) long rest it’s working as intended. It doesn’t really matter if the “encounter (s)“ are a single combat, 3 combats or a roleplay encounter, terrain and a trap. One or two short...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Healing Spirit Nerf=Complete Overkill

I played in one group that used original healing spirit for a while. I played a healing cleric, but once the ranger got access to it it wasn’t long before we relied on the ranger for between combat healing! I run a game where we don’t use any non PHB spells (iirc) with 2 of the players who play...

Let the Players Do the Work

While I get the value of the latter part of the OP; Shopping? organising a party? That’s not what I or my players want to do during our limited time game sessions. I ask my players to create adventurers or investigators not party planners - the implication is that I as GM with present them with...

What do space empires fight over?

Same as always, the personal profit and the greed of the ones making the decisions. Profit isn‘t about the fact that a resource is plentiful or rare its about getting it for less that you sell it for. How much less? That’s the billion credit question. The question isn’t why have conflict over...

Blog (A5E) Level Up’s Monsters: Ecology

An extra vote for listing treasure available from monsters via harvesting. A common reason D&D characters adventure is - kill monster; collect treasure. So if there is some X CR monsters should have Y treasure table then instead of an ankheg having some items of value like a silver mirror and a...

    AD&D 1E How/How Often Did you award XP in 1E AD&D?

Usually when the adventure was completed or the party pulled out to rest and consider their options. I never gave out Xp for gold - just for monsters killed and magic items divided evenly amongst survivors.

D&D General How many groups of players have you played with, face to face?

I tried to answer but I couldn’t. Too much player crossover between campaigns so I’m not sure if they are the same group with a player or two added and a couple dropped out or if it’s a new group? Edit: 40 years playing - maybe 25 players who I played with for at least 5 years each

D&D 5E (2014) What kind of XP awards does your group currently use in 5E?

Exp awarded after every session. Pre covid we had played about 14 weekend sessions (Friday evening until Sunday afternoon) at the rate of 3 a year and maybe 8x4hour online sessions a year since 2015. The party is now just 8th level.

D&D 5E (2014) What kind of XP awards does your group currently use in 5E?

One game was 50% of book stated amount for monsters (threats/puzzles) overcome another is 10% of book amount for monsters overcome (5% if they are monsters irrelevant to an aim (ie wandering monsters)) plus story amounts for acts performed (rescuing people, discovering stuff etc). Obviously I...

    This is the Way

I agree with this. A TV series which has a single over arching plot line per season but with some monster/mystery of the week stuff a la Buffy, Stargate etc is a winning TV formula AND it combines two of the common ways D&D campaigns are played episodic adventures and overarching campaign...

D&D General Advancing the Plot when the PCs don't take the bait. . .

Yep, give the players choices - that’s what player agency is about. Have there be consequences to their choices - otherwise they weren’t real. Don’t predetermine what the consequences will be as you don’t know what the characters will do but lean towards a more dramatic consequence. Remember...

    D&D 5E (2014) M'jal's Mighty Tome

Lots of good, evocative stuff here Stormonu, it is very large as you say. I have my own homebrew stuff and so am looking at what I can use. Heres a few thoughts. I didn’t look at the races much And in my games I virtually ban pets and summoned creatures so can’t comment on them (I have 6-8...

D&D General Am I the only one who plays D&D with more than 1 character per player???

Only In a “learning the game“ style game iirc plus I have played some online play where the players knew they would have attendance issues so had someone ready to step in when they left - but not at the same time.

D&D General Am I the only one who plays D&D with more than 1 character per player???

Way back I’ve played games with 2 players and a GM. In D&D each then controlled a couple of characters but that was seen as a somewhat undesirable necessity, as a way to get around the issue of a party “too small” for modules. Once we got up to 3+ players we tended to each choose a favourite...

D&D General Letting a Game feel like a Game ~ Mechanics and Simulationism

surely then you are sick of the “I do 11 damage, is it dead?” Followed closely by the the “I did 7 damage is it dead now?” and “ how badly wounded does it look?” and the “Which one looks most injured?” questions?

D&D General Letting a Game feel like a Game ~ Mechanics and Simulationism

As I said above once they are past low levels, and are a couple of rounds in to a fight I tell them AC and approximately what proportion of max hp the creature has left (As well as if a creature is resistant, vulnerable etc.) I also tell people conditions affecting the creature (stunned, blind...
