Magic is not the red-headed stepchild.

I guess this should also mean no more knocking oozes prone right lol.

    Magic from contemporary fiction

I doubt it would feel enough like D&D but 4E's treatment of psionics mechanically could be a nice basis for the magic system.

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E and the OGL

Yes, but I imagine a fair argument could be made that WotC leaving the edition and OGL behind played a significant role in the rise of the pathfinder issue. Seems like something of a perfect storm to me.

"Je veux mon livre...I WANT my book..."

I miss the sheer joy of spellbook recovery during the course of an adventure. When the wizard finally got to look through and see what spells he might learn it was often the same look I see on a kids face christmas morning.

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E Will Epic Fail If

Regarding #1 While this is a point of concern on internet message boards I would be surprised if the OGL were a deciding factor at your average gaming table when deciding what to play. As far as #2 goes an electronic tool/apps might be optional but the lure of a great character builder or...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E Will Epic Fail If

I doubt it can be an "epic" fail carrying the D&D name this time around. If it fails miserably in the attempt to be the one edition to rule them all or ends up being an airbrushed version of a previous edition then I think it sets up the potential for 6E to fail in an "epic" manner. Right now...

    Rule of 3. May 8th

Agreed on number 2 but number 3 didn't say the ranger would be the best at archery (we already know the fighter is the best archer in the realm) it said the ranger would be better than the cleric.

    Roles to any Class

4E took some interesting steps in this direction, in fact many 4E builds were in essence cross role variants. (Personally I wanted to try and build a 4E bard that could back up tank as a building exercise but never followed the build all the way through.) Do we need a formal mechanic for this...

When did the Fighter become "defender"?

I enjoy many of the team work synergies built into 4E having witnessed a brutal rogue and a shielding swordmage working in tandem its both fun and amazing. I'm not so sure how much fun it was for the DM though lol.

A gamist defense of limited in-combat healing

It would be interesting to see healing surges reworked (and renamed) to represent some sort of damage avoidance mechanism. Perhaps they become available once the character is bloodied and let the character spend one to negate a hit via parry or dodge, luck etc. Then question becomes should they...

Character Expectation, Limits By Level and Class, and Specialists

Niche protection isn't a bad idea if done right. Otherwise some classes can be non optimal or even obsolete.

    Magic from contemporary fiction

I think the 4E ritual system would cover a lot of the magic in the dresden wizards not all of it but quite a bit.

Idle Musings: Inverted Interrupts, Focus Fire, and Combat Flow

There are currently lots of incentives to focused fire. For example if you run into a pack humanoids in the current edition barring minions the sheer amount of hitpoints each one has is motivation to focus fire and get them off the battlefield asap reducing their total damage output each round...

    "Aggro"

Marking was a reasonable attempt at this. Nothing a coke bottle ring can't keep track of. It certainly made playing a defender more interesting. Maybe if the fighter is the new combat king he won't need it anymore idk.

D&D is NOT Kobolds surviving Fireball

The million dollar question then is what will the default assumption be.

D&D is NOT Kobolds surviving Fireball

since you mention 3.x in contrast to what the 4E MM describes as a level 1 kobold with 24 hitpoints the 3.5 MM's kobold entry is 1HD 4hp so again the 24 hitpoint kobold is largely a 4E issue.

D&D is NOT Kobolds surviving Fireball

You are of course free to dismiss the problem as old however if 5E is going to be one edition to rule them all then its an issue that will need to be looked at.

D&D 5E (2014) Different approach to buying the core books in 5E

I did preorder the 3 core 4E book thinking that like all previous editions I would end up both playing and DMing. In the end 4E just doesn't support the kind of game I want to run so the DMG and MM both ended up being wasted money, as they aren't even an enjoyable read. Having learned the hard...

D&D is NOT Kobolds surviving Fireball

I think the 4E default assumption that "level 1" kobolds have 24 hitpoints might be a large part of the problem lol.
