D&D 5E (2014) Can somebody sum up 5E for me so far?

D&D the linux edition or D&DLE.

Were people's expectations of "Modularity" set a little too high?

I suspect we are already playtesting a few modules and that they will continue to swap modules in and out with each playtest release. Its really pretty smart to not call them modules if they did a significant portion of playtesters would likely pick and choose which ones to use not a good thing...

    D&D 4E What 5E needs to learn from 4E

This past weeks gaming session reminded me of the one thing that 4E does better than any previous edition IME the boss fight. This past week our 11th level party fought an aspect of Dagon (a watered down version) and the battle hit all the right notes. The feeling of an overwhelming threat...

D&D 5E (2014) With Respect to the Door and Expectations....The REAL Reason 5e Can't Unite the Base

Its more like I say I don't like flip flops and you say but dude your wearing sandals. What you fail to see is that while they share some common properties not all sandals are flip flops.

Expertise Dice Not Necessarily Fighter Exclusive

Not just martial characters I could totally see spell casters getting a variation of these action dice. They could be spent to do things like change a close burst into a burst or a cone, or exclude allies from damaging spells or change a fire spell into lightning etc. Heck you could even call...

D&D 5E (2014) With Respect to the Door and Expectations....The REAL Reason 5e Can't Unite the Base

Hopefully I can clarify this for the "what about hit points" crowd. When I sit down to watch a Sci Fi movie Faster than Light Travel is often an assumption that I have to accept in such movies. I know its not possible but its so widely used in Sci Fi that its not immersion shattering for me. It...

D&D 5E (2014) With Respect to the Door and Expectations....The REAL Reason 5e Can't Unite the Base

I find the action dice to be an interesting mechanic however I don't see why it should be fighter only and I don't see why it should be a core assumption of the game instead of an optional module.

D&D 5E (2014) So did they just drop modularity ? This is what has me worried.

I hope they are just playtesting some of the modules. I too would be disappointed if the fighters action dice or these alternate magic systems were a default assumption and not optional rules modules.

D&D 5E (2014) With Respect to the Door and Expectations....The REAL Reason 5e Can't Unite the Base

In my experience (since about 1982) this was unique to 4E play. As described by the poster I originally quoted, in combat there was the announcement of the power. Roleplaying speaking in character etc waits until the battle is over not by choice or design thats just how the game seems to play...

D&D 5E (2014) With Respect to the Door and Expectations....The REAL Reason 5e Can't Unite the Base

This largely reflects my experience playing 4E. Most of the role playing seems to happen outside of combat, while in combat we see power announcements with little or no roleplaying. Nothing wrong with it but I can see where it can be perceived to discourage roleplaying.

People you like that you've never met

I'd love to have a couple beers and chew the fat with Salman Khan.

A DM by any other name

That's great, I'm not trying to say anyone is doing it wrong or having wrongbadfun. There are a million ways to play the game and if it works for your group cool.

The Theory of Tens. A Knee Jerk Hypothesis

I would be surprised to learn that the net change in total players with the publication of 3E was a negative number. I would also be surprised if over its 4 years of existance the total people playing 4E was only 10% fewer than 3E. Anything is possible and you theory has just as much merit as...

A DM by any other name

Sure but I don't think any of these games would ever be confused with D&D which I believe was the game central to the discussion. I am not trying to say that round robin improv theatre is an invalid playstyle after 30 years if nothing else I've learned there is no limit to the range of...

    Madden NFL 13

Congrats on your 49ers! The Madden Franchise is probably my favorite among all the console games. I first started playing it on my sega genisis way back in the day and have been hook across many console platforms ever since. In fact that game and the EA NHL franchise were probably the only...

A DM by any other name

Thats fine you shoot me an email between sessions and say hey I was thinking I'd like some family ties to that new NPC I'm all about it and I'll shoehorn the heck out of things to make it work if i can. But you bust out in the middle of the session and say surprise he is my long lost uncle all I...

A DM by any other name

Oh no you were quite clear with your example. I get it and as i said in an earlier post I'm glad it works for your group. Wrong, in Dungeons and Dragons the DM has always been the Arbiter/Judge/Ref. Its the game not a house rule or something I just made up, its not a mutual decision (at least...

D&D 5E (2014) How Can D&D Next Win You Over?

Sorry for the confusion I guess my quote was too big. Is this what you think 5E will be?

A DM by any other name

Haven't tried what inventing stuff about the DMs NPCs and making wild assumptions about them without knowing what role they are intended to play in the adventure/campaign? Um no i have more respect for the work the DM puts into his game than that.
