D&D 5E (2024) The Undead Army Necromancer is not Designable

The latter part :) And I wasn't deriding it, it's just looking at design from, like I said, more of a gameist perspective as opposed to simulationist. But you're in good company, that's how 5e's been headed since the late 2010's. I'm not sure where I fall on that gameist-simulationist curve...

D&D 5E (2024) The Undead Army Necromancer is not Designable

Sounds like a 4e solution. Not that that's bad, 5e has gone in a distinctly more gameist direction over its development cycle, which heads more in the 4e direction.

D&D General My experience with paid D&D tools after 3+ years as a DM/Player

Yeah "modern" DnD, 3e and afterwards, has a lot more to keep track of. I play OSE with a group still, that we play purely Theater of the Mind no problem... but modern DnD has a lot of moving bits and pieces.

Ha well, my hurdle was just understanding how all the different notes + links worked together, were set up etc. That's why I mentioned wanting a campaign to reverse-engineer, just having a little generic skeleton of a thing with all examples of linkings etc; that's how I learn best...

D&D General My experience with paid D&D tools after 3+ years as a DM/Player

I think this depends on a lot of factors.. what the GM likes, what the players like, what game you're playing, etc. Call of Cthulhu is distinctly a non-battlemap game. DnD can play sans battlemap just fine if the battles don't have too many enemies/moving pieces, but it can benefit from one. A...

Yes, re: Archivist AI. It seemed to remove chitchat well enough.

How many "steps" is too many?

To be clear, you're saying that cover is neeldess/onerous and is usually ignored? It comes up very frequently in my games- all the time, in fact, if you're a frequent ranged attacker. I have, however, heard the same thing about height and falling damage, that taking features that...

I have a few players that turn off the music entirely, and a few that request it- there's no middleground, it seems. I mainly have it for me... mostly nostalgic stuff, like Baldurs Gate 1+2 music for combats and Icewind Dale music for exploration etc etc.

Yeah I guess I'm in some playtester account setup... whoops :'D I haven't used it in a while (it worked fine but I just never kept up with reviewing the session summaries so like many new shiny things, it fell by the wayside for my ADHD arse).

Wow, I did a playtesting for them when they were just getting started... looking at it, my account is apparently still on some free deal 🤷‍♂️ I don't even have the option to set up a paid plan when I'm logged in 😅

Appreciate reviews like these, I'm sure they're very helpful to a lot of folk here :) Obsidian.md's been a hurdle I couldn't get over... I couldn't grok it, and I didn't have an "Example DnD Campaign" to load up and reverse-engineer tounderstand what made it tick :( I'm jealous of folk that...

Dungeons & Dragons: Ravenloft: Heir of Strahd Review

Wow, thanks for the info and thank you for writing some of my favorite DnD novels! edit: I really pulled from the Black Rose books when I ran Ravenloft- I even adopted Azrael Dak as an NPC that came to Barovia on behalf of his master, he had tasks for the party that would upset Strahd, and my...

Dragon Delves Dedicated to Chris Perkins

@dave2008 is the resident dragon-master, have you taken a look at the 2024s and how they stack up? Ofc the 2024 characters are more potent as well so... 🤷‍♂️

Same. I ran RHoD, the party was level 12 near the end and it was supposed to be an Adult blue (in 3.5), I upped it to ancient.. they still rocked its face :'D

D&D's New Solo Player Guideline Explained

For duet play you'd figure they would inject a little more than More Inspiration and More HP. You can add a little extra, say give the PC a "legendary action" themselves. Simple and relatively clean.. they can choose to take an extra action at the end of another creatures turn. Bam. Or just give...

RPG Evolution: What Do You Mean, "Run"?

I think one issue, with dnd5e at least, is that ranged attacks can't (RAW) knock foes unconscious. It's always lethal. It needs to be a melee attack. I kind of wonder what the reasoning for this is. Is it just "realism?" Or is there a design choice behind it?

RPG Evolution: What Do You Mean, "Run"?

How does not allowing retreat with "known foes" such as Red Hand hobgoblins, or even outlaws, leading to the party becoming shunned and hunted outlaws?
