D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts on playing Elf in Out of the Abyss [SPOILERS]

The surprise? The game starts with the PCs as prisoners of drow. If you don't tell them that, it's less surprise and more of a "gotcha". Besides, how does the elf player come up with these reasons if he doesn't know? I'd tell the players how the game begins and let them come up with a reason...

[UPDATED] Out of the Abyss Reviews Have Started Rolling In

The previews have been okay, but this review is what has me stoked. This kind of adventure is right up my alley. Can't wait for it to show up!

Pathfinder Online Layoffs; Ryan Dancey Leaves Company

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, this is my point. Great awesomeness for the fans, sure, can't argue that. WotC, not so much. Dancey came up with it while working for WotC. That's all I'm saying. And yeah, it was a passing comment, I didn't think it would take over thread.

D&D 5E (2014) An adventure start for new PCs isn't railroading...

It wasn't an attack, it's just not the type of game I'd play in. I don't write a whole lot, but I do read a ton. If I want to be told what happens to the protagonist of the story, I'll read a book rather than play a game. For me, the game is about what the players do, the story always takes a...

D&D 5E (2014) An adventure start for new PCs isn't railroading...

Fair enough. One should care more about what one's players think over some dude on a message board. If they're having fun, then it's all good. If I were a player in that game, though, I'd wish the GM good luck in his novel writing career and find a new game, but that's just me.

Pathfinder Online Layoffs; Ryan Dancey Leaves Company

That's the OGL, I was talking about the d20 license in that quote. But as for the OGL, I'm not sure the heads of WotC sat around the table thinking it would be good for another company to some day outsell them with what is fundamentally their own game. But if they did, yes, mission...

D&D 5E (2014) An adventure start for new PCs isn't railroading...

Personally, I'd only do this if the party winning the fight was a possibility to start the campaign. Otherwise, what's the point? A fight the party can't win or escape from is an actual railroad, unlike letting the players know they will begin the game captured.

Pathfinder Online Layoffs; Ryan Dancey Leaves Company

Not forgetting that at all, but that wasn't my point. The d20 license ended up not so good for WotC, the company he worked for. When they created it, it was meant for adventure creation. When the d20 companies started making rules accessories, WotC made 3.5, which made everything with a d20...

    D&D 5E (2014) DOUBLE XP WEEKEND!!!

Do I get some cool armor if I scan in this code on my Mountain Dew?

Pathfinder Online Layoffs; Ryan Dancey Leaves Company

Right, that was my point. Customers might be happy with the results of those things, WotC at the time, not so much.

    D&D 5E (2014) Princes OR Abyss

OotA will fit fantastically into Primeval Thule, so I'm going to run it there when we're done with PotA. The 5e conversion of the setting should be long done by then.

Request: Move the Optimization Section back into the General 5e Section

I agree with this. I think it works well separated.

Pathfinder Online Layoffs; Ryan Dancey Leaves Company

I feel bad for those affected by this, but honestly, I felt bad for everyone involved with the Kickstarter back when it first appeared. Man, poor Dancey isn't exactly batting 1.000, is he? d20 licence leads to d20 bust D&D OGL leads to Paizo taking over market share CCP's WoD MMO crashes and...

Rage of Demons: "D&D On Hard Mode"

If RoD is D&D on hard mode, does that make Paizo's Dungeon mag APs, "D&D on Nightmare mode"?

Rage of Demons: "D&D On Hard Mode"

Though, really, magazine subs aren't the best metric to use. I'm willing to bet most dead tree magazines have had their sales tail off between the 80's and late 00's.

D&D 5E (2014) So did that employee ever return from his Jury Duty?

I, for one, would like to know what this guy is doing right now. Also, I'd like to know the color of his socks, his favorite band, what toppings he likes on his sub, and where he was last Thursday night. Inquiring minds want to know!

FORBES: Out of the Abyss preview

I think some people are mistaking this for sunshine and lollipops. It's more dark humor than golly gosh darn silliness. Clowns can be silly. They can also be scary. Out-of-place crazy chaos can make one roll one's eyes, but it can also be quite creepy. Presentation matters, so a DM can...

D&D 5E (2014) Looking for Underdark modules to adapt to 5e.

Do you have the playtest files? Reclaiming Blingenstone is a decent low level underdark sandboxy-style adventure.

Wand of Viscid Globs: Straight Out of Out of The Abyss!

This is a good point. Maybe this thing is a macguffin that the PCs need to take on a bunch of demon lords before level 15... That was mostly sarcasm, I actually hope this isn't the case.

Wand of Viscid Globs: Straight Out of Out of The Abyss!

This is definitely going in my game...on the final NPC right before the end of the campaign. :p
