Can a DM expose a vampire character to sunlight with combat actions?

I am away from my books, but I wasn't under the impression that page 42 was supposed to be there for monsters at all, it is just there to accommodate players' "I want to do this" sort of improvisational actions. I suspect that it isn't particularly balanced with monster actions in mind (and I...

Um... what? The 1e thief was used for a lot longer than 2 or 3 years.

    Cleric (Templar) is Up

Well in the case of Fire Storm the 'real' nerf is moving the zone damage to end of turn instead of beginning IMO. The burst size and damage reduction hurts, but now the minions (or whoever) you miss can walk out of the zone before they die.

    Desert world campaign.

You can probably mine the 3.5 "desert" book for ideas if you can get your hands on a copy - was called "Sandstorm" if I'm remembering right.

    Mearls' "Stop, Thief!" Article

You're reading it wrong. I certainly don't think he's saying that bad rules are better than good rules, I think he's just saying that the experience of playing with bad rules can sometimes make someone a better player (or GM), which I totally agree with. I'm not saying going out and playing...

    Cleric (Templar) is Up

I'm actually playing an epic tier devoted cleric right now; I think of all the changes here the one I'm actually going to feel the most is the huge nerf to Fire Storm. No longer is it an 11x11 auto-minion-kill, which was a pretty huge thing to have access to in a group with no real controller...

Using some or all of a power.

You can't skip the damage, no. Actually the only reason you can skip pushing people is specific to forced movement - you can push/pull/slide people up to the amount specified, and the amount you pick can be zero. With other secondary effects like a daze or ongoing damage or something, you can't...

    Tweaking party composition

It looks to me like you really need a striker more than anything, especially if the cleric is heavy on area blasty type stuff for handling minions. You might consider a slayer, if essentials classes are to your taste. A barbarian covers the 'dude with big 2h weapon' niche pretty well too.

Can a DM expose a vampire character to sunlight with combat actions?

"More interesting" is in the eye of the beholder. When any random minion can give you unremovable ongoing 10 damage in any outdoor, daytime fight, at will, then yes I think that rises to the level of 'crippling'. Worse, there's a strong element of DM fiat involved that in some groups would...

Can a DM expose a vampire character to sunlight with combat actions?

Who said anything about 'never'? There are monsters out there who do radiant damage. What is being described in this thread takes what should really only be a mild weakness (this is 4e after all) and turns it into a crippling why-did-I-pick-this-character flaw.

Can a DM expose a vampire character to sunlight with combat actions?

I probably wouldn't do it unless the PC is effectively at the enemy's mercy in some way already - bound, unconscious, etc. The vampire doesn't need every monster in the game to have a special 'kill vampire' extra power.

    Death, Dying and Entitlements.

I think 'entitlement' is kind of a loaded word to use, it sets the player vs. DM relationship as innately hostile which it really shouldn't be (IMO). D&D is typically collaborative at its core - even in dangerous, high-death-count games - not antagonistic.

Yeah the Primal keyword on the powers is a dead giveaway for it being at least somewhat supernatural, IMO.

Good combat mechanics, you should say. For sending your crow to fly up the Tower of the Serpent to peek in the window of the High Priest and maybe steal the signet ring off his desk, the mechanics are just fine.

I think you are seriously underestimating the potential of an encounter recharge, sustained, 1 mile range remote-controlled monkey. :)

If you can get your hands on a copy of Red Hand of Doom, it has a bunch of good stuff like this.

3 PC Party - Go Taclord?

Group looks a little thin on ranged attack options, you might want to consider that in your planning. Laser cleric is really your only leader option for ranged with PHB-only.

Sure, in terms of raw combat power it is pretty terrible. If you're in a RP-heavy intrigue game with lots of skill use or whatever I suspect it compares much more favorably. Not every option is going to be equally suited to every type of game.

When does Combat Agility's effect occur when it is triggered by movement?

Right, the fighter still has to abide by the range restrictions of the attack as defined in the power block.
