Judge Rules That AI Training Doesn't Violate Copyright

Mod note: You speak about "good sense", but then proceed to insult everyone who doesn't agree with you. It is unnecessary, and uncalled for, and given the rules of the place, not exactly good sense. You're done in this thread, and I don't suggest you enter another one until such time as you...

    Disney sues Midjourney

At the moment. But, moments change. If nobody can make a living creating that art, there will be far fewer works created, as folks will have to use their time engage in other work to put food on the table. They won't be able to devotee their lives to the skills of art, and overall quality...

    Disney sues Midjourney

Mod Note: Okay, we allow folks to have strong opinions on this site, but there are bounds on wishing harm on people. And, much as you assert otherwise, the fact of the matter is that every single artist who has done work that wasn't "for-hire" (like most novelists), has benefitted from...

    Winning and losing in RPGs...

No it does not. Or, have you never lost playing solitaire?

D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

If you think I was saying you disputed that they had a boring game, you didn't get what we need to be more gracious about. Look again - are there words that Faolyn uses that explicitly say that the ONLY solution is fail forward? Has anyone actually explicitly said that - the ONLY solution...

    Winning and losing in RPGs...

I actually feel that it works in both directions, win and loss, and that's actually important. Specifically, if your GM is one of the, "there is no losing, so it is not acceptable for you to feel like you lost," types, that can be a problem for players who feel put out when their characters die.

D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

Or, if we want to, I dunno, be more gracious in our reading, it suggests that their experience without it has had many boring bits. Right. What you all are arguing over for.... hundreds of pages... is whether one general method of making sure there are other options is acceptable, or needs to...

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Microsoft's browsers have always been quirky - sometimes I think because for businesses it drives retention. Mission-critical stuff works in the MS browser, so we will not move off that browser...

    (Netflix) K-POP DEMON HUNTERS

I watched it last night, and had a good time doing so. The animation style is quirky, as you'd expect from the folks who did Into the Spider Verse and The Mitchells vs The Machines. If you are okay with K-pop, the music is pretty good - the lyrics quite clever in their layers of meaning in...

    Winning and losing in RPGs...

Well, note that in many multi-player games, several players can lose before the game ends. You can go bankrupt in Monopoly, and the game goes on without you.

No. It is the hottest jawbreaker ever.

    Winning and losing in RPGs...

By that logic, you don't lose in your bowling league, because you get to play next week no matter what happens this week. "So long as you can play again, you can't be considered to have lost now," probably misses the point of having win/loss conditions in games. Our rulebooks do not layout...

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

That really only applies if you were attempting to eat the Earth. And unless you're Galactus, trying to suck the ooey-gooey goodness out of a volcano disqualifies you from the discussion on the grounds of just plain dumb...

    Advancement, A Weird Idea?

I find handling advancement during play, on a roll-by-roll basis, to be disruptive to play. And, if you don't notice that on one roll you meet the requirements for advancement, because you're focused on the events at hand, you miss out, which isn't great either. I am neutral on the idea of...

    PROJECT HAIL MARY Trailer 2025

He's there to be a mission specialist. Then, like in The Martian, things go pear shaped, and he has to do things he's not trained to do.

In this case, three is justification for it in the story.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Raviolis are part of the more general group, "dumplings". Hot pockets sit pretty comfortably in the "hand pie" category. The Earth is a dumpling if you consider the oceans to be sauce/broth. Otherwise, it is a pie.

    PROJECT HAIL MARY Trailer 2025

In The Martian and Project Hail Mary, his main characters spend most of their time alone, which probably doesn't help in that regard.

    PROJECT HAIL MARY Trailer 2025

So, Project Hail Mary is an okay book, but not Weir's best. He's stepping beyond things that are solidly known science and into more speculative stuff.

    Optimization and optimizers...

Mod Note: Assigning value to people based on their play preferences isn't Deep. It's kinda junior-high-school cliquishness. How about we stop that, folks, please and thanks, before it gets even more insulting, hm? Thanks.
