D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

Where did that one grain of sand come from, pemerton? No, that that one - the other one. The one there, next to that bit of shell. No, the other bit of shell, not the one near the pebble... You seem to suggest that every single detail of your games is explicitly stated - and that's laughable...

    Optimization and optimizers...

Please do not present the English language, or all things, as a black-and-white arbiter of any discussion. It will fail you. In this case, it failed you when you used the phrase, "...choosing the right stats...". Define "right". Until you do, there's a lot of wiggle-room in there to debate.

Is there a way to hide (ignore) a thread if there is no prefix for that RPG?

And, note that this is not the feature working as intended. We don't really want ignoring (or being ignored by) the person who started a thread to make the entire thread invisible to you, and if Xenforo fixes it, that behavior will end.

So what? I mean, in theory, anything a player does in a session of play may serve an unlimited number of different player-goals at the same time. But, let us back up a bit. Why do we play games qua games? Like, why do we play Catan, or Go? While there's a stack of reasons, several of them...

So, I find that depends on who's definition of "narrativist play" you are talking about. I mean, we don't even all agree on what "narrativist" means... You seem to be positioning "assured" as a requirement, which I don't think I agree with. And, there you have a solid example of what I...

Metacurrencies are often considered narrative, because you use them not to do the best manipulation of the rules (which would be gamist), and are instead used to make the resulting story turn out as you want it.

D&D General D&D Version of Boardgame Horrified Coming In August

Yeah. The Cryptids version of Horrified, for example, includes the Chupacabra. Beating it requires you gather goats, which don't exist in the Universal Monsters set.

    I made no such extrapolation.

How did you learn to run or play Mage?

So, in our group, that would have worked to establish a justification for spending XP in Strength or Stamina later, but would not have made the magical working coincidental. Coincidence is about what local observers would see at the time you do something that defies the dominant paradigm. What...

No, it was just you. We were just all in on it. +10 to paranoia.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

I understand the point, but feel it important to note that that's NOT how addiction works. Addiction is not about how good the world is. It is about chemical vulnerabilities of our nervous systems. People have been getting drunk, high, and stoned, and addicted to the substances that produce the...

How did you learn to run or play Mage?

Oh, Mage. Yes, back in grad school I played in a Mage: the Ascension Chronicle that lasted for years. Probably the best tabletop RPG campaign I've ever been in. Mind you, I came out of it feeling that Mage: the Ascension was both the best RPG, and also the worst, depending on who was running...

D&D General D&D Version of Boardgame Horrified Coming In August

The other versions of Horrified are fun, light, cooperative games. So, I'm looking forward to it.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

So, this past week, my wife received what amounted to a Nigerian Prince spam... through regular US Mail. It was a little different. It claimed there was a Dr. (for sake of this post) Smith, who had died, and left behind a life insurance policy for tens of millions of dollars, but had no known...

    Dragonlance DRIVETHRUFICTION QUESTION

Good, because I like your work and would feel awful for putting you off. As others have noted, the Promotions/Press would be a fine place to pit links to things you want to promote. And if you have any questions, @Dannyalcatraz and I are Moderators here, and @Morrus owns the place. You can...

D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

With some exceptions around online play for the pandemic, I'm usually the GM, and don't get to play much at all. I grab occasions for one-shots as I can. I've recently started an "RPG of the month" series to run one-shots of some of them.

I feel like this has the goalpost sliding a little bit. For some of the people here, especially in this discussion, the style of games they are willing to play or run is very narrow. Saying that they don't run games in a style they don't care for is a narrow statement. Me? I'm well on...
