    D&D 5E (2014) Dungeonscape no more?

Fair enough. I guess I should say such a failure is catastrophic to me. I get that I might be an outlier in that regard. But I would add that they've dropped the ball in several other ways -- the GSL poison pill being a big one -- that to me clearly demonstrates that whomever is managing the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Dungeonscape no more?

And I've watched them all as well, starting with 2E. I don't share your opinion. I think 5E is definitely better than 4E, but frankly that bar wasn't very high. The spectacular failure of DS wasn't just a set-back...it was a practical inevitability given WotC's record with digital products...

    D&D 5E (2014) Dungeonscape no more?

Agree to disagree. Since 2010 or so, WotC's worst enemy has been WotC. From the repeatedly-delayed poison-pill original GSL, to the knee-jerk pulling of the 4E PDFs (and subsequent failure to offer PDFs at all for 5E), to the spectacular flame-out of the character visualizer and the game...

Oh, no doubt. I'm certainly guilty of my share. :)

    D&D 5E (2014) Dungeonscape no more?

The information is in the title: WotC has ended its partnership with Trapdoor. No additional information has been forthcoming. The rest of the thread is people discussing it. Which is what tends to happen on a discussion board. As for armchair game marketing -- at this point, would it even...

    D&D 5E (2014) Dungeonscape no more?

The best thing WotC could do right now is: 1. Release water-marked PDFs of the 5E core books on dndclassics.com. 2. Make a licensing deal with Lone Wolf for Hero Lab support. 3. Let the community develop the rules app (as simple as laying off the "cease-and-desist" letters). However, because...

    D&D 5E (2014) Dungeonscape no more?

Excellent. But that contradicts my observation about the validity of an inference based on the product's lifespan how? 30-40% of 3.5 players converting to 4E is not equivalent to to saying that 30-40% of 4E players came from 3.5. The former is referencing 30-40% of number X, where X is the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Dungeonscape no more?

I don't think it's much of a stretch to say that it won't take long to reach 50lbs. It didn't in 4E. Or 3.5. Or 3rd. It could be different this time, but I'm not holding my breath.

Thanks. I'm sure he/she and I would get along great in person, but, well...Internet. It doesn't help that I have a (self-judged) charisma of 8. :)

    D&D 5E (2014) Dungeonscape no more?

Trust me...I don't play Pathfinder because I like the mechanics. If it were just about mechanics, I'd be playing 13th Age. Or Savage Worlds. It's just so much easier to find Pathfinder game, and the organized play is very accessible. And, unlike 5E, I don't have to lug 50+ lbs of hardbacks...

    D&D 5E (2014) Dungeonscape no more?

I don't think we can necessarily infer from a 4-year lifespan that 4E was profitable. Throwing good money after bad is a time-honored tradition in corporate America (and everywhere else, really -- I think it has to do with the way we as a species perceive risk).

Trust me, posts that begin "no offense, but you're a liar" do make me question my choice of hobbies. :(

    D&D 5E (2014) Dungeonscape no more?

I was a 4E converter. I subsequently felt very burned by the collapse of the character visualizer, the game table, etc. and the pulling of the PDFs. And now, WotC seems to be repeating all the same mistakes. It's very frustrating, really...I want to support D&D, but they have to sell the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Dungeonscape no more?

Again, I explicitly stated that I would make no further purchases after the core. Read my posts in context. Today, I went a step beyond and canceled my DMG order. I'm sorry you can't accept that, but that's what happened. In fact, here's a copy of the e-mail: "Amazon.com Your Orders |...

    D&D 5E (2014) Dungeonscape no more?

I appreciate that nuance is a lost art on the Internet, but I explicitly stated I was dumping 5E AFTER I BOUGHT THE CORE. In fact, on Monday I wrote: "Correct. I'll take a look at Dungeonscape once released -- who knows, maybe they'll wow me -- but I suspect there will be some sort of DRM...

For me, the digital editions are a (necessary) supplement to hard copy, not a replacement.

    D&D 5E (2014) Dungeonscape no more?

Believe what you like...I canceled my Amazon pre-order of the DMG today. And if you read my posts you'll see that, despite my annoyance about the PDF situation, I've always maintain that I was buying the core three in hard back. In fact, said that as recently as yesterday. In fact, this will...

    D&D 5E (2014) Dungeonscape no more?

It worked out fine for them; they just grossly misunderstand the market. As evidenced by the fact that nearly every other industry player of note releases their books in PDF to great success. But you're right...let's just wait and see how DungeonScape-- oh wait.

    D&D 5E (2014) Dungeonscape no more?

This isn't about my "life choices." Though way to make it personal. It's about WotC's unwillingness or inability to adapt to market realities. The simple fact is that print. media. is. dying. The choice which companies face is equally simple: Adapt or die with it.
