  1. Grogg of the North

Anyone else mark the monster population ON a copy of the dungeon map when preparing?

I do something like this, too. It helps me visualize what the denizens are up to and what they'll do when attacked.

    unwilling/hostile mounted combat help

Killjoy115 what did you wind up doing to resolve this in game? I'm sure most of us are curious to know.

    unwilling/hostile mounted combat help

3.5 already applies a -5 for riding bareback. I would be wary about stacking penalties for no bridle. One of the basic ride checks lets you guide a mount with your knees.

    D&D 3.x 3.5e : Mirror Image and Concealment

Are you sure about that? Because I'm not seeing that in either the PHB or the SRD. I read where they mimic your actions and react to AoE spells but that's it. As for mirror images copying spell effects, the way I have seen it described as when you miss because of something like blur or...

    unwilling/hostile mounted combat help

Page 204 of the DMG. However, with that being said, I wouldn't say "no" to your player but instead a "Yes, but....". Give each creature something they can do in this struggle. The halfling wants to ride around on the shark. Give him a full round Handle Animal check with a DC 30ish. If he...

    D&D 3.x 3.5e : Mirror Image and Concealment

I agree with delericho on mirror image. I think this would definitely be a scenario where you should ask your DM out of session about how they would rule on it.

    Keeping a Group Together

The book of challenges has a side table on running monsters that are smarter than you. Towards the end it suggests that while listening to the party making plans, assume that whatever plan they come up with the monster has already thought of itself. It does warn the reader to use that tactic...

What's the correct way to read a Percentage Dice? (d%)

This is what I use. When I first started playing, one of my first DMs explained it as one die is the 10's digit and the other is the 1's digit and that I just added them together. As a DM I don't care what players use, so long as they are consistent.

    Keeping a Group Together

The 3.5 DMG. My apologies on not being specific. The gist of the passage is that as DM, you can't cheat. What you say goes. But you should be careful in what you do because you're playing a game and the point of the game is to have fun. It also states that if your players feel you won't let...

    Keeping a Group Together

Page 18 of the DMG says otherwise. Pathfinder basically reiterates the same points as the DMG. Fudging is a tool at the DM's disposal. Use it as you feel necessary.

The Plane of Shadow: Dimly Lit?

Are the people that lose children's card games sent there? OT: What if the PCs bring in light spells or other light sources? Does the area around them stay at dimly illuminated or can they raise it to bright illumination?

    Keeping a Group Together

Hmm ... let me try to explain. Fudging some die rolls to ensure that the game continues and that everyone at the table is having fun is, in my experience and opinion, a good thing! :) Fudging the die rolls so that the baddies always hit, make their saves, crit or generally make it feel like...

    Keeping a Group Together

I've been aware of the DM fudging dice. I wasn't upset by it. Everyone at the table was aware that he screwed up on planning the encounter and that we were on our way to a TPK. The DM realized he had goofed and did his best to rectify it at the table. I, and I feel everyone else at the...

    DMing 2 groups

Something to keep in mind, the owner of an orb can communicate with the owner of any other orb. So it may be pretty obvious that there are two groups gunning for the orbs once each side has one. Also, for having an orb, ALL dragons hate that person. So if the groups show up to have a big show...

How much value do you place on Time

It depends. One adventure may have the PCs clearing out an old fort at their leisure. Another may involve them racing against the clock to stop the cultists from completing their ritual. So time is a resource just like any other. Sometimes you have to worry about it; other times not.

    Keeping a Group Together

Fudging isn't necessarily bad. Especially when, as a DM, you realize you've screwed up.
  17. Grogg of the North

    DMing 2 groups

Okay, it sounds like you've got a good idea of an over-arching story. That's half the battle. What's the starting level of the game? What I would probably do for a start is that after a recent landslide/earthquake/avalanche/whatever, a new section of caves has opened up in the nearby...
  18. Grogg of the North

    DMing 2 groups

Where do you see the game ending? Are the two groups going to wind up meeting and fighting over control of the orbs? Will they have any interaction on each other's campaigns? (Can Group A sabotage things for Group B?) What are they going to do with the orbs? Are the group goals mutually...

    Troublesome player/character

What version of Heroforge does he use? I, for one, would be willing to plug in numbers for you. Again, even though Heroforge is a great tool, it's just a tool. It's on the player to double check everything! There are some feats, classes, and abilities that Heroforge screws up.
  20. Grogg of the North

    Troublesome player/character

I'm not sure how your group feels about things like Heroforge but my group's general rule is that you need to go over your sheet and make sure everything makes sense BEFORE you come to the table.
