Ben Riggs talks about Why WotC tried to cancel the OGL

This one time after training we went to play pool but I dropped 60 quid at some point between the training hall and the pool hall and I couldn't afford to take my lady out for dinner the next night and that burning, impotent, insidious rage was like what WotC felt when they realised that for the...

What's Your "Sweet Spot" for a Skill system?

It's the FoRKing that makes BW-derived skills so much fun/flexible and useful in the hands of players. Every time I play a game with non-FoRKable skills, I sit around wishing I was FoRKing my character's skills. Imagine if your 5e character could stack Perception, Insight and Insight into one...

What's Your "Sweet Spot" for a Skill system?

My Runequest and 5e hacks have 50 skills. I consider this the minimum number of named proficiencies for a skill-based game. If you're going to have fewer than 50, then the game should be attribute based. Some people might think it's obvious that I run a lot of Burning Wheel.

The "I Didn't Comment in Another Thread" Thread

I'm just here for the real controversial content. M*A*S*H should've ended after four seasons!? Someone needs to fight me, and it ain't me!

    AD&D 1E How about a little love for AD&D 1E

I think that more than anything, 1e was the edition of (A)D&D that was always actively trying to kill your characters, in really horrible ways. Which made any form of progress or achievement so much more worth it.

Star Wars The Most Overused Tropes?

I kind of think of the Star Wars planets-as-environments as a stylistic choice that really let Lucas lean into the smash cut. I know technical readings (Doylist?) aren't overly popular with the Star Warsers, but it is what it is. I also thought (as a boy and now as the man) that the Star Wars...

Star Wars The Most Overused Tropes?

I don't mind this so much. It reflects some of the pulpy origins of Star Wars, and SW is where the "trope" really grew trope legs and put down trope roots. But I think everything else about Star Wars is the most oversused trope. The commercial and critical success of Andor shows that taking a...

D&D General Converting AD&D saving throws to stat-based saves

Some might say Constitution or Dexterity suit it better, but I prefer the idea of having to somehow lean into it with grit and determination to avoid the worst of a dragon's breath.

Shield. Breastplate. Pot lid. Floor matting. Warehouse pallet. Crossed bracers, Wonder Woman style. Whatever you can imagine, my dude.

D&D General Converting AD&D saving throws to stat-based saves

Because the only character who can regularly Save against Breath Weapon is the Fighter, holding up a shield with enough Strength to resist the inexorable spread of supernatural exhalation. But snark on ungrammatically my dude. You u do.

    AD&D 1E How about a little love for AD&D 1E

Adventures Dark & Deep is an amazing game @ValamirCleaver I used some of the classes as add-ons to a an OSR-ish game I was running, and the Bestiary is an absolutely amazing addition to any D&D library.

    AD&D 1E How about a little love for AD&D 1E

I'm a Fighter for 1e who styles himself after a Knight and begs the DM for breadcrumbs so that I can say with confidence that I'm a knight but they just lead me along and tease me with the possibility of one day riding a real horse!

    AD&D 1E How about a little love for AD&D 1E

Mad love to the first RPG i ever encountered and to the magical, mysterious writing style that hooked me into the worlds of fantasy. I'd run it now, if any of my players let me. But they don't. sad stench kow noises

D&D 5E (2014) Enough about Darksun, is there anything preventing a 5.5E Birthright remake?

Oh yeah I got that, sorry, I was just pondering different possible timelines.

D&D 5E (2014) Enough about Darksun, is there anything preventing a 5.5E Birthright remake?

I didn't know that, and wish that had happened. I do think the rulership and warfare game is the juiciest hook, though hats off to whoever writes a version of the rules both old hands and today's gamers would find acceptable (and I do sorta count myself in that latter camp now).

What We Lose When We Eliminate Controversial Content

Here we see a reproduction of the ancient Egyptian god Set (colourised). Archeologists have theorised that Set was actually a syncretised god of Celtic extraction (probably Scottish), due to what is called the "DID YOU JUST SPILL MA PINT?" expression Set appears to be wearing in this stele:
