Experience with Decipher's Star Trek RPG

Just my luck, the site appears to be down JUST as I recommend it.Oh well, it was up and running as recently as two months ago (to be clear, that's May 2024), when I know I was using it (our campaign still struggled with chargen questions).

Experience with Decipher's Star Trek RPG

Perhaps surprisingly, this advice remains sound even fifteen years later. In fact, here in 2024, that site was just about the ONLY useful site still alive on the net for purposes of understanding the byzantine Player's Guide... It's not well indexed by Google. Unlike in 99% of other cases, you...

Experience with Decipher's Star Trek RPG

I wrote up my contemporary experiences (it's not 2009 or even 2017 anymore!) before I found this thread. Rather than repeat myself, here's a link: https://www.enworld.org/threads/decipher-star-trek-rpg-news-wanted.126810/post-9394564

Decipher Coda system conversion into d20??

CODA rips out every check and balance WotC put into 3rd edition, so that's no surprise. Not sure it was ever worth converting CODA into d20. Once you start, you might as well fix the flaws of CODA, and in the end you will have designed a brand new game. Of course this is written 16 years...

Decipher Star Trek RPG news wanted

Again, these posts are written 19 years later. (I like a bit of good thread necromancy as much as the next guy, but I'm not super into baiting people to reply to ancient questions. No need to trick you guys into thinking I'm from 2005) Cheers!

Decipher Star Trek RPG news wanted

Supplementary game mechanics are as you expect also falling for the once-common error to mistake complexity for realism. Starship combat is a very cluttered and involved affair with a huge amount of rules noise: numbers, statistics, procedures and rules. It's definitely a dated game in that...

Decipher Star Trek RPG news wanted

As for actually experiencing the game (my Narrator is running adventures written by Decipher yo the best of my knowledge, not his own material) it felt wonky at first, but I'm starting to appreciate what they were trying to do. Yes, the mechanics are poor, but we've mostly sorted them out by...

Decipher Star Trek RPG news wanted

You might ask: why play CODA then? Simple, it's the only Star Trek game my Dungeon Master (Narrator) fancied. Older efforts like FASA Star Trek are too primitive and unattractive. Modiphius 2D20 system is not what my N likes, he wants simulationistic systems and loathes games with player...

Decipher Star Trek RPG news wanted

Playing the game right now (and yes, this is the future 19 years later talking). The layout (of chapters and sections, not images and graphics) and editing is atrocious. Not just chargen, but everywhere. Everything is much harder than it needed to be, because of poor organization and worse...

D&D 5E (2014) Does anyone play 5e Perception rules as written?

@Deset Gled The complaints are two-fold: By making Darkvision easily available, players are robbed of the sensation darkness is mysterious and fearsome. The current rules work against having darkness as a foe (at low levels). The idea you feel elated and relieved when you finally gain...

D&D General 5.5 and making the game easier for players and harder for DMs

I think the idea GMs want to kill PCs is a kind of contempt directed at OSR. The point is not to kill them. The point is being able to challenge them, without running through ever-more hoops to do so.

D&D 5E (2014) Does anyone play 5e Perception rules as written?

No. Nobody wants the hassle if disadvantage on Perception. If you have Darkvision, you can see in the dark. Simple. Switching away from low-light vision and making Dark vision super common was a bad, bad idea. (Having low level PCs actually fear the dark is a good idea) Don't make it...

    Furiosa

I just watched it: it's not horrible or even bad or anything, but Fury Road is such a masterpiece that my first and foremost summary will be: It didn't ruin Fury Road. That's the highest compliment I'm willing to give. This movie just feels like Netflix version while Fury Road is the...

D&D General D&D Editions: Anybody Else Feel Like They Don't Fit In?

It is my understanding you don't need rules at all, just make stuff up. Your point?

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook preview: "New Spells"

No, I admit I had to face the realization you haven't listened to anything I was saying and thus I was wasting my time.

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Pre-orders; this is sad

I'm assuming I can just buy the dead-tree PHB and play the game. D&D might become a subscription service, but that time is not now.

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Pre-orders; this is sad

I started reading but never could find what your problem is. Then I started skimming and probably missed it. I still have no idea what your issue is.

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook preview: "New Spells"

I would say no low level spell should require the DM to adapt simply because it represents a no-brainer. The game would be better off without the 2014 Shield spell.
