How 'Hope' and 'Fear' Work In Critical Role's Daggerheart

I don't know anything but this game, but don't forget to take this one step further. If the GM deems the story is better if the encounter is an ambush, then it just is, no points needed. Then the points can instead be spent to extra monsters or whatever. And of course, if the GM already from...

D&D General The Double-Edged Sword: Is The New D&D Edition a Cash Grab in Disguise?

You don't need to tell people to stop coming up with good ideas. You just saddle them with few people short deadlines and self-imposed own-goals like "if 70% of people doesn't like it, it must be bad". Everything about this is meant to keep 5E being a cash cow for a few more years. Nothing...

D&D General The Double-Edged Sword: Is The New D&D Edition a Cash Grab in Disguise?

No, we understood this years ago. The transition from 3E to 5E truly was a worthy improvement. But it only happened when WotC was desperate after 4E had crashed and burned. They couldn't afford to go the usual route, where you polish what you're already selling making sure to offer enough...

How 'Hope' and 'Fear' Work In Critical Role's Daggerheart

Yes. And worse; if the game sets the expectation bad things can ONLY happen when the GM pays the cost. The obvious truth is and must remain: the GM can have bad things happen at any time without restrictions and without rules. These "bad bennies" need to be specifically tied to a small subset...

D&D General The Double-Edged Sword: Is The New D&D Edition a Cash Grab in Disguise?

All new editions have as their primary purpose to convince customers to start forking up dough again. If the previous edition could keep the money flowing there would be no new edition. So yes, you can say it is a "cash grab". I would not say anything about it is disguised, though. Companies...

Not DnD | Against the Darkmaster

I know. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to continue the themes and setting of the prior campaign Shadows of Northern Wood. I really had hoped VsD would focus on one setting, and focus on providing lots of adventures for that one setting. What D100 gaming definitely does not need is more...

D&D General One thing I hate about the Sorcerer

I am not arguing sorcerer should be a wizard subclass.

AI is stealing writers’ words and jobs…

turns out AI can be trained at all kinds of visual recognition, many of which are profoundly helpful and will improve everybody's lives. AI is the tool. Don't be angry at the tool, be angry at the wielder. AI can recognize cancer on x-ray plates better than a human. It can apparently also find...

D&D General One thing I hate about the Sorcerer

I don't mind the separation born/plagued with gifts => play a sorcerer mind for academics & studied long and hard =>play a wizard One thing I do hate about the sorcerer is that they stole the metamagic concept that OBVIOUSLY should be available for wizards as well.

Not DnD | Against the Darkmaster

My later summary, again reposted: Against the Darkmaster is a valiant effort to resuscitate the D100/RoleMaster rpg engine. Especially if you're an older roleplayer you will have heard of D100 and, relevant here, the Middle-Earth Role-Playing (MERP) game. Just be aware that these older games...

Not DnD | Against the Darkmaster

Reposting from the earlier thread (which is recommended in its entirety): Writing this in 2023, after playtesting Against the Darkmaster or "vsD" for ~10 sessions. First, let's set expectations. This is basically MERP. And no other game. It is not RoleMaster and it is not HARP. In some cases...

AI is stealing writers’ words and jobs…

It is clearly better if billions can produce pictures and words than if only millions can do it.

AI is stealing writers’ words and jobs…

I wrote this hundreds of pages ago and I write this again: The topic title of this thread is a lie. Nothing says a segment of the workforce, called "writers", have or should have a monopoly on coming up with adventures and stories. Just like with image creation, it is MUCH MUCH BETTER overall...

WotC New D&D survey from WotC as part of the 50th anniversary year.

It's still magnitudes less money than in almost every other entertainment sector. You're saying a small company can't do that. And you are right - a Mom n Pop type operation can't, and most ttrpg publishers are just a few guys in a cellar. That just reinforces my argument, though: "some risk...

Paying five people is taking a MINUSCULE risk. It really tells you how small this market is.

WotC New D&D survey from WotC as part of the 50th anniversary year.

I don't think so either. Layoffs when an edition is mostly done has happened before and will happen again. It's always a bad look to fire people about Christmastime, but if you apply for a position at WotC you really ought to know this and plan accordingly.

WotC New D&D survey from WotC as part of the 50th anniversary year.

No you don't have to wait until after the edition is published to get rid off the staff. Every layoff is considered poorly timed - it's always outrage when people get the slip around Christmastime. We're not having a disagreement. I'm reminding you and the thread that if you look at history...

WotC New D&D survey from WotC as part of the 50th anniversary year.

I can't force you to stop believing there's something special with this particular round of layoffs. There likely isn't, though. I can only suggest looking at history. Once you realize mass layoffs is close to routine at each edition's sunset, you cease to be surprised by them. And when you...

WotC New D&D survey from WotC as part of the 50th anniversary year.

No, now you're making assumptions. You're assuming people were let go before the workload tapered off. The workload tapers off WAY before the product hits the shelves. I am sure managers at WotC knew exactly when they no longer needed to pay a lot of people. Since most editions of D&D come out...
