DCC Level 0 Character Funnel is a Bad Concept

No, that's not my logic, that's your logic. My logic is that everybody interested in DCC has d4s and d12s already. And by everybody I mean EVERYBODY :) No but seriously. Your logic might have flown if we had this conversation when Gary Gygax were young. Alternatively, had DCC taken off, and...

DCC Level 0 Character Funnel is a Bad Concept

The other poster tried to further the inexplicable (and frankly, trolling) argument that playing with DCC level zero characters should always end up with all of them dying. This is absurd. As if regular D&D level 1 characters are that much more resilient?! (If you start at level 5 or higher...

DCC Level 0 Character Funnel is a Bad Concept

As for myself, the choice here was basically to purchase the damn dice, or not play the game at all. Using regular dice... just eugh, that would not fly. And rolling actual physical dice is the essence of our rpg sessions, so resorting to computer dice was never an option for us. I'm convinced...

DCC Level 0 Character Funnel is a Bad Concept

It also means you can never get any speed going. Each. And. Every. Time. someone wants to cast a spell, the specific table for that specific spell needs to be brought out, and nothing happens for several minutes while we try to figure out how this specific result is going to work in this...

DCC Level 0 Character Funnel is a Bad Concept

Well, I love me some evil sorcerers and hooded cultists... ..but the game needs to be playable for player characters, that is characters that might assume at least some responsibility for their actions, characters that can think ahead and not just act stupidly or selfishly. Player characters -...

DCC Level 0 Character Funnel is a Bad Concept

Let's drop the attempts to get you to play a game you have clearly set your mind to never play again. Now let's discuss something much more important: the awesome adventures you say you've scooped up! 🙂 Please do play or GM them with your preferred OSR style ruleset as soon as possible! The...

DCC Level 0 Character Funnel is a Bad Concept

Man you had all the bad luck, didn't you? My DCC dice look clean and nice. And what's wrong with 1970s pizza? 😉

DCC Level 0 Character Funnel is a Bad Concept

I know you find it reasonable to consider a world where we all use computers and phones when we play ttrpgs, but some of us prefer the analog experience. Stating that obscure and expensive dice is a needless hurdle to game adoption is an entirely reasonable viewpoint to me. I liked DCC a lot...

DCC Level 0 Character Funnel is a Bad Concept

Absolutely. And I don't need a chart to simulate a d16 on a d20, or a d5 on a d6. My point is instead that nit having the exact dice used by a game is a situation most gamers dislike being placed in. They CAN make it work. It's just a nuisance that can well mean the group chooses another game.

DCC Level 0 Character Funnel is a Bad Concept

I didn't actually contrast any commoners to level 1 heroes. I don't know if there are any official level 0 characters in 5th edition, but if they're stronger than Commoners, my rule of thumb probably applies to them as well 🙃

DCC Level 0 Character Funnel is a Bad Concept

If you're playing online or with computer tools at the table. I would say that if you do have the funny dice, they aren't a nuisance. It's not having them I was talking about 🙂

DCC Level 0 Character Funnel is a Bad Concept

It's worth saying there is absolutely no reason to not be generous and say "yes" all the time. After all they're level 0. No matter how generous you are they can't break the game :)

DCC Level 0 Character Funnel is a Bad Concept

Yep. Four level-0 characters are often MORE powerful than one level-1 character. Sure we could wish for the rulebook to contain more examples to help the GM new to DCC, especially a GM that's used to regular (modern) D&D.

@Reynard and @Lanefan maybe discuss Star Trek in a thread of its own? I don't see many Trekkers finding your posts in this thread. This thread is about DCC :)

DCC Level 0 Character Funnel is a Bad Concept

Thanks. Regarding the funny dice - they must have been struck with a moment of megalomania. If DCC ever grew to even 10% of WotC's size, I could see it justified. But asking your customers to purchase funny dice for just this one sideshoot of the D&D family. That's a hard sell. I mean, I...

DCC Level 0 Character Funnel is a Bad Concept

You're never having your monsters attack from the sides? And again, the point of the funnel is much more than reducing the number of characters per player. How do you roll up a level 1 character without using exactly the kind of crutches that foster the "ubermensch" mentality. It is an...

DCC Level 0 Character Funnel is a Bad Concept

It never ceases to amaze me how many gamers that refuse to accept that for many GMs, thing being actually printed beside the table makes an actual difference, and provides help to the new or uncertain GM. Just saying that lots of games fail to take advantage of this new technology, and lazily...

DCC Level 0 Character Funnel is a Bad Concept

That sounds cool but I am noting how carefully you avoid the obvious issue: friendly fire. The reason magic was avoided wasn't because it was dangerously cool or just dangerous. It was of course that a rational analysis of the choices, the outcomes and the probabilities determined it to be...

DCC Level 0 Character Funnel is a Bad Concept

That all sounds great in theory, but when the players decide to never cast spells, something has clearly gone wrong. Of course, if you just love starting fires with no regard for either friend or foe, DCC spells could work for you. This player would really really hate if his spell torched his...
