But they're not the same. We don't know exactly how different they will be, but from the UAs it seems that for example stealth will be handled significantly different in 5.5. If you look up a rule in a rulebook at the table, you want to find the same rule regardless of which PHB you grab.

Everyone doesn't have control of the house rules at the table. House rules are good, but things working out of the box is better. I don't expect perfect balance from 5.5, but from what we've seen, one of the major design goals of the revamp is to improve balance.

Plenty of people disagree with that, and say the Paladin and GWM have been broken from the start. And it's only gotten worse as Xanathar and Tashas have added more multiclass combos.

I kinda doubt there will be any massive 50th anniversary branding on the main 3 books. WotC is going to want this PHB to last for a long time, and the 50th anniversary will seem kinda dated in 2030. There might still be a limited run of 50th anniversary books with alternate covers.

Pretty sure that Eldritch Blast will scale with warlock level, but all other cantrips will scale with character level.

If there's one thing I've learned from working with software design, is that something that's glaringly obvious to one person, can be completely un-intuitive to someone else. Making things explicit is never wrong.

I don't think there will be many complaints either. Most groups will abandon old 5e and move completely to the new version, so there will be nothing to complain about.

I do hope that Vecna actually has a reason that makes sense from his perspective to want to destroy existence. Stories with high stakes can be fun, but when human writers try to write characters that have alien motivations, the results can be hit or miss. I'm quite excited for this adventure, so...

This time we're not saving the world, we're saving the multiverse! If you're going to have stakes like that, a level 10-20 campaign is the right place to do it!

So why not write that it's a spell? Why leave the DM to guess if it's supposed to be a spell or not, and if so what level?
