D&D 5E (2024) Check Out The New Monster Manual’s Ancient Gold Dragon

Solo monsters in 4E worked fairly well. The main reason its not working here is because the dragon's damage is too low. Legendary Resistance is half the equation (for solving Boss monster saves); the other half being that it should cost the Boss a 'Reaction' to use one. That way forcing it to...

Solo fight for... Five Level 17 characters Four Level 18 characters Four Level 19 characters (in its Lair) Three Level 20 characters (in its Lair) The XP Budget says its a solo monster.

D&D 5E (2024) Check Out The New Monster Manual’s Ancient Gold Dragon

Exactly instead of the frustrating Banish effect it should just do a lot more damage. It doesn't look like these Legendary Actions solve any issues either. I mentioned it previously but the more I consider it, the worse an idea I think Legendary Actions are because the designers massively...

Yes its extremely disappointing...we will see if the 'mighty' Tarrasque suffers the same fate in a few weeks.

D&D 5E (2024) Check Out The New Monster Manual’s Ancient Gold Dragon

DC 24 CHA save Banish is broken when the character might very well have a +0 or +1 to that save. You never blow your most powerful abilities/spells until you need to. These are the fights you save them for. Epic Tier casters have two 6th and 7th and one 8th and 9th level spell, that's...

D&D 5E (2024) Check Out The New Monster Manual’s Ancient Gold Dragon

Thanks Dave buddy. Yes the damage looks low in Flee Mortals as well. Not sure why the game designer obsession with extremely low 2 dice attack damage for Gargantuan creatures. Baffling.

Great work Sulicius in doing a proper playtest. I wanted to get the Flee Mortals hardback. But with shipping to the UK it was 140 dollars. Good to know the monsters pack a proper punch, might grab the pdf if I can't snag a copy on ebay.

D&D 5E (2024) Check Out The New Monster Manual’s Ancient Gold Dragon

Of course I have read the updates, but I'm not the 'memory master'... 1. I haven't got to play with 2024 as yet. 2. I know there is power creep but that Indomitable update is crazy strong. 3. According to WotC, 2014 is compatible with 2024 and vice versa. Enjoying this discussion Chaosmancer...

D&D 5E (2024) According to D&D Official YouTube Channel Aberrations & Oozes are next on January 21st.

We know they have added the Blob of Annihilation, I wonder if there are any new Aberrations; particularly some "Apex Aberrations" Uvuudaum style.

    D&D 5E (2024) Monster Manual 2025 Monstrosities Video

Was a bit deflated when the Primeval Owlbear was said to be 'just' CR 7, I was hoping it was going to be a CR 25 Owlbear Kaiju.

Agreed, they may as well have just made it a use of Legendary Resistance its that good.

Goodness me! Stack that with (the new) Indomitable and you practically get 4 x Legendary resistance per day. If only Bards weren't the second least chosen class (at Epic Tier). ;) Absolutely. Possibly, but the XP Reward is for a Highly Difficult encounter.

D&D 5E (2024) Check Out The New Monster Manual’s Ancient Gold Dragon

Not based on my experience. That said, the new (crazy powerful) 2024 change to Indomitable solves this issue for straight Fighters. Well I mean how dumb does the Ancient Gold Dragon have to be to not know Fighter's and Barbarians are "tougher" than Wizards and Rogues? Fighters and...

D&D 5E (2024) Check Out The New Monster Manual’s Ancient Gold Dragon

Yes the 2024 update of Indomitable looks unbelievably good (if a tad overpowered) - I think that alone makes me believe the dragon might be in trouble again. :D Well you get Advantage...unless that has changed as well? Well unless you are stacking multiples of those a typical character...

D&D 5E (2024) Check Out The New Monster Manual’s Ancient Gold Dragon

Its a potential perpetual Banish until the fight becomes a 1 vs 1. Typically the best tactic will be to Banish the character with the highest HP or AC. Yes, resources that replenish after a long rest. If the CR 24 Ancient Dragon is not the culmination of or sum totality of the encounter then...

D&D 5E (2024) Check Out The New Monster Manual’s Ancient Gold Dragon

I meant either/or my mistake. ...the best tactic. True but its -5 damage per hit from the Rogue versus a potential 28 damage against the Rogue. Honestly I don't see a big point to it in most fights. Maybe if a bunch of damage dealers group up (but even then most have their best save...

D&D 5E (2024) Check Out The New Monster Manual’s Ancient Gold Dragon

Yes it could certainly happen. But its an irrelevance next to the Banish - which is what the whole fight hinges on. Rogue Evades. Fighter saves and Second Winds (if he gets a turn). Wizard Absorbs Elements. Cleric uses Healing Word (or some other spell). The XP Reward is for a "Highly...

D&D 5E (2024) Check Out The New Monster Manual’s Ancient Gold Dragon

Well I sort of agree and disagree here. Firstly, the only strategy here is for the Dragon to use Banish. Everything else is sub-optimal. So tactics do not apply here (except maybe which order to Banish the PCs in). Secondly none of the attacks combo with each other, which misses the...

D&D 5E (2024) Check Out The New Monster Manual’s Ancient Gold Dragon

Ran a loose mock-up of the Dragon 1 vs. 1 against my Level 20 Fighter (back before he gained the Epic Boons and the Blaster Rifle)/Powered Armour). Fighter was AC 28 and has a +1 Sword that deals +2d6 vs. Spellcasters and Spellcasting Creatures. 20 Str, 20 Con with Luck and Toughness feats...
