D&D General The purpose of deity stats in D&D.

Well from what I know at the time of Deities & Demigods being written, Gary was in Hollywood trying to get a Dungeons & Dragons movie made (or something of that nature)...the failed development of which eventually morphed into the Krull movie. So Gary didn't have any input into that book and in...

Why spend the time and effort making stats for something that is just too powerful to be challenged unless you first have the means to allow heroes to challenge it. I mean why put a Challenge Rating 100 monster in the Monster Manual...it would just be a waste of time and space. I'm all for...

Is it possible that Jim Ward in doing the research back in the late 70's used a source that perhaps played up Loviatar's 'death' aspect rather than her 'disease' aspect? ...either that or maybe he didn't want multiple Finnish Plague Goddesses and took some creative license; I mean they did make...

As far as I know Gygax didn't write or have any real involvement in the creation of Deities & Demigods beyond writing a Foreword. The idea in 1980's America (and I am not American so I can only guess) was presumably...let's not offend the majority of people living in this country where we sell...

Gilgamesh and Imhotep. Likely a handful of others too. Most don't 'ascend' while living though.

Nothing wrong with that as long as Thor gets to fight back and he'll fold Level 20 characters like a deck chair on the beach.

What are you defeating to get the necessary 60 million XP (388 Tarrasques maybe? ) and how long will it take? Well exactly, most epic boons do not stack and the ones that do won't stop Set giving you a slap.

Absolutely. It means they are interact-able characters within the game. The question is not can you kill a God with stats; but rather how and what is the journey to get into a position to even attempt to kill one? Given that 5e is capped at 20th-level, even the best tooled mortal party will...

Seems like a back-peddle. They went from un-interactable to now "highly resistant". Is that highly resistant in the same way a Tarrasque would be to Low-level characters? Okay so now you are saying that mortals can un-imprison a deity that was (presumably) imprisoned by another deity. Ergo...

Its too difficult to keep comics continuity consistent over decades with dozens of different writers and editorial teams. Its tricky to nail down Marvel's approach but it would seem the gods are immune to natural and even cosmic phenomena unless the source is purposefully 'antagonistic'. So...

    a) Which doesn't affect your players because it will never be them anyway because you limit their progression to Mid Tier (or thereabouts). b) Which doesn't affect your gods because they don't have relatable physical forms and no one in your campaign is allowed powerful enough to interact with...

I actually own a bunch of Ms. Marvel comics (she wasn't always "Captain" Marvel) and while I like the character, I don't think what made her unique (for those in the know) made her especially palatable as a modern heroine for the MCU and legions of young girls - which was presumably Disney's...

D&D General The purpose of deity stats in D&D.

I agree you could have 'cool interactions' but you cannot have exciting ones if one side risks nothing. Exactly. Its arguably more of a necessity than a temptation. Then why have such a strong opinion on high/epic tier gaming when YOU never play it and do not allow it at your table? Having...

Long time Thor fan, I have every issue of Thor up until 2014. Her Plot Armour is impressive, her Box Office...not so much. ...except that you have now constrained your options because you cannot challenge deities directly...whereas I opt to remove those constraints and thus my epic campaigns...

I agree, but when rules are applied they should be simple and concise. As I mentioned, high/epic level D&D is already complex enough that its always a factor in any "Top 5 Problems with Epic Tier D&D". So no point compounding things. I think we can go even simpler than that I mean did every...

I understand that's your opinion, but it doesn't help facilitate cool battles and interesting stories does it. Much more interesting IMO to stick with the side that does have the cool interactions and exciting epic moments. Well it depends on the power of the deity doesn't it. A hero-deity...

D&D General The purpose of deity stats in D&D.

Well firstly, you would be ignoring the 60+ years of Marvel continuity which has included and involved hundreds if not thousands of deities within its stories; not least the Mighty Thor himself and if we use that character as a parallel to D&D, where he is seen as an Intermediate Deity we can...

Didn't Jim Ward mention Gary (Gygax) was purportedly a bit annoyed Deities & Demigods (which wasn't written under his auspices) did not have something akin to the Quasi-deity and Hero-deity transitional powers (later shown in the World of Greyhawk gold boxed set) - although it did have the...

To be interact-able it has to be like Tier 4 vs. Tier 5. Personally I think fighting an Avatar should be a stepping stone rather than a capstone because if it is a capstone its a horribly underwhelming one. Would Avengers: Endgame be the same if they just defeated an Avatar of Thanos?
