D&D 5E (2014) A case where the 'can try everything' dogma could be a problem

Just like anything one is going to be spending a significant amount of time and/or money on, one should most certainly do their homework researching such things. That's just being a smart consumer. I didn't advocate against such distinctions, just that one form isn't subjectively superior to...

D&D 5E (2014) A case where the 'can try everything' dogma could be a problem

You might be surprised. They aren't called indie games any more for a reason. There may be styles of games today that you might not want to play (I know that's certainly true for me), but that doesn't make them any less valid. Nor do I understand the point of even trying to argue such.

D&D 5E (2014) A case where the 'can try everything' dogma could be a problem

Players can do this, too. It's true, I've seen it in action. :) That's certainly a way to do it. A good way, in fact. Especially if the player isn't interested in giving input. This part I agree with you, actually. In my games, rolling the dice is about interacting with the environment...

D&D 5E (2014) A case where the 'can try everything' dogma could be a problem

So, a GM has to have the answer to each and every possible question and situation figured out beforehand? I hope it's quite obvious how impossible that is. So what happens when a PC does something that a GM hasn't yet considered? If the GM makes up the answer based on what he knows about...

    DriveThruRPG Hacked

That's why I use mSecure. Data is stored locally, and mSeven doesn't have any master password info.

    DriveThruRPG Hacked

This is why password managers are great. I have over 60 instances on mine, all completely different 10-character gobelty-gook and the manager I use (mSecure) is cross-platform, so all of my devices have all my passwords.

Character Narratives Preview from PRIMEVAL THULE

That's cool. That said, your "3/day" idea cleaves with 5e rules well enough. There are a number of abilities that can be used a certain number of times per long rest, so that would work.

Character Narratives Preview from PRIMEVAL THULE

This thread doesn't have very good support, but it might be entering a golden age!

Character Narratives Preview from PRIMEVAL THULE

While I don't disagree that's OP as something you can do every encounter, and it's honestly not hard to interpret as 1/short rest, this suggestion would only work by making it a bonus action. Even PCs that have multiple attacks only have one attack action to use them with.

    D&D 5E (2014) A new Golden Age for D&D

Man, seems like in every thread I enter, the "lack of content" dead horse continues to get whipped. Anyhoo, not sure about a D&D golden age, per se, but I can see it for RPGs, in general. The rise of the pdf has made the previous "underground" scene a lot more available.

Unearthed Arcana Crawford On Lots Of Stuff! Release Tempo, Video Games, OGL, Conventions, Unearthed Arcana, 2018, Tia

Bay's movies aren't terrible because of concept, they are terrible in execution.

Not the same sort of thing, but the thing you're looking for, I think. The "hints" from the already published adventures are how the baddies are "going elsewhere" after a failure to try again. Tiamat's plan for Krynn didn't work , so she tries on Toril. Same with Tharizdun, who failed on...

Character Narratives Preview from PRIMEVAL THULE

Hrmmm. Maybe I should just convert the setting myself rather that pay for a conversion I still need to convert... :/ I understand the language issue, but maybe a closer hewing to the rules using different language (like the "once per hour hour long rest" suggested above) is possible?

D&D 5E (2014) A case where the 'can try everything' dogma could be a problem

It seems weird out of context. That's only part of the story. That would be my offer to the player, with the starting assumption that they want to get through the door. He could certainly come back with, "Hmmm, I don't really want to make noise, and I'm not sure we absolutely need to get past...

Mike Mearls on stuff... (Tome Show interview from GenCon)

Yea, I'm not a con-goer, but I was always under the impression from podcasts I listen to that Gen Con was the place for announcements, distributor booths, and panels, and Origins and other cons were the best places to actually play games.

Don't get hung up on the concentration example, he's talking about the mechanics, in general. They can't vet everything, unlike the collaboration efforts of the official books.

D&D 5E (2014) Ravenloft in 5e: What would you like to see?

I have the 1st and 2nd Ravenloft box sets, as well as the core Arthaus 3e book, plus this blog has some good ideas for converting some of the crunch to 5e, so I don't really need one, personally (a UA article similar to the Eberron one would be cool). But to answer the question, I was more...

D&D 5E (2014) A case where the 'can try everything' dogma could be a problem

That's kinda, sorta what's going on. Like a highly perceptive PC will spot something without rolling, the knowledgeable PC will know the answer to a question without rolling.

D&D 5E (2014) A case where the 'can try everything' dogma could be a problem

While the result of the check has to do with noise or lack thereof, the check is actually to open the door. Binary would be: succeed - door opens, fail - door doesn't open. Fair forward, at least from what I've read about it in DW and 13A, is about the the PC still doing what they wanted...
