D&D 5E (2014) Battlemap Vs. Theater of the Mind

I think it's a wash. There's needing to move minis around with a battle mat, but there's sometimes positioning questions from the players without. I play with minis in my 5e game, and without in Savage Worlds game. I see it just more as a preference.

    D&D 5E (2014) Prepping for Princes

Don't blame you for not knowing about it, it only came out yesterday.

This can come in handy for stat blocks.

Princes of the Apocalypse Basic Rules Supplement

Right. It was released for use with PotA, but certainly useful in any game, core or Basic.

Princes of the Apocalypse Basic Rules Supplement

This is the "DM's Companion", if you will. Monsters and magic items.

D&D 5E (2014) Troubleshooting Princes of the Apocalypse

Agreed, this is a feature rather than a flaw, in my eyes. Any adventure or setting book that is 100% self-contained isn't very well written, I don't think. Extra stuff helps make it more of a living, breathing world and gives the DM ammo for continuing the story.

D&D 5E (2014) [5e FR] Per Ed Greenwood, the drow deities Eilistraee and Vhaeraun are alive post-Sundering

She was the only deity detailed in the 3e FRCS but not mentioned in the 5e PHB. I only noticed that when my player chose her as a patron.

WotC's Nathan Stewart: "Story, Story, Story"; and IS D&D a Tabletop Game?

Fatal flaw? Which version of D&D started off with a This-Is-How-You-Make-Your-Own-Homebrew book instead of adventures? There might be some special snowflakes that built themselves their own living, breathing world for their very first game of D&D, but most of us cut our teeth on published...

D&D 5E (2014) Considering "taking the 5th" (Edition); questions for those more experienced.

There have been some good answers to the OPs question, so it's funny anecdote time! The rogue in the party is hasted and gets a second attack. Meanwhile, he also grappled and restrained by a roper (as are the other two members of the party). This combination of factors means: a) he gets two...

D&D 5E (2014) Princes of the Apocalypse as source material

I've hacked parts and pieces of published stuff for use in my own games for years. As a sandbox adventure, this sure fits the bill as easy to drag and drop. So, yes, recommended both for use in full, or for use in pieces.

D&D 5E (2014) [5e FR] Per Ed Greenwood, the drow deities Eilistraee and Vhaeraun are alive post-Sundering

I didn't know she had died. Though I did note her absence from the list of deities in the PH. The drow in our party follows her, but we play in the 3e timeline, 1372 DR, so no issues there. :)

WotC's Nathan Stewart: "Story, Story, Story"; and IS D&D a Tabletop Game?

Well, nuts. Here I thought I was a fan, but I like video and board games, as well as RPGs. Sucks that they support gamers instead of "fans". You have to understand that this was the PR guy speaking in a Forbes article, not a forum post in reply to ExploderWizard. Of course it's all corporate...

    D&D 5E (2014) Would you change a monster's hit points mid-fight?

Do you have a pair of binoculars? That might help you find my point. I do appreciate you making up for the lack of judgement in my post though. Seriously though, to each their own. I was just making an observation from my own game.

WotC's Nathan Stewart: "Story, Story, Story"; and IS D&D a Tabletop Game?

Looks like he meant to say that it's not "just" a tabletop game anymore.

    D&D 5E (2014) Would you change a monster's hit points mid-fight?

Something happened in my game Monday night that made me think of this thread. I roll in the open when I run games, have for a few years now after the longest time of rolling behind a screen. The PCs encountered a roper while traversing the Underdark. The fight did not go well for the party...

D&D 5E (2014) Anyone play with just the basic rules?

To be fair, there's a difference between old-school feel and an actual old-school game.

D&D 5E (2014) Anyone play with just the basic rules?

If I wanted to play something simpler, I'd probably run ACKS. I like the level of options available in the D&D core rules though. Basic is a great option running for kids though, agreed.

    D&D 5E (2014) Would you change a monster's hit points mid-fight?

I can only speak for myself, but I like how the variables in the mechanics help to dictate how the story moves along, not just to my players, but to me as GM. When something unexpected happens, whether it's the PCs take the unexpected path, or the dice go crazy and cause either an NPC to go...

    D&D 5E (2014) Plot points

As an aside, I read "Plot Points" before opening the thread and thought, "Yes, a Savage World style sandbox campaign is a great way to play D&D."
