My Sword Coast Legends First Impressions

Or they could have just spent more time on it. NWN came out 2 years after 3e launched, for example. I might be more interested in this game if more time would been invested in it. Luckily, Fallout 4 is right around the corner....

D&D 5E (2014) [Primeval Thule] House rules for spellcasting

You'd think party members wouldn't take too long to figure out what their ally is doing, though. I see what you're getting at, I would just have trouble explaining it through the in-game fiction to my satisfaction, so I'd have trouble convincing the players. Sound mechanical idea, though.

D&D 5E (2014) [Primeval Thule] House rules for spellcasting

Huh, good idea, I like. My game won't start for a while, so I have some time to consider exactly what I'll do, but something like this might work.

D&D 5E (2014) [Primeval Thule] House rules for spellcasting

I'm not sure watching someone burn is enough to drive a person mad. At least, not in the traditional sense. Maybe if "fireball" was a flying immolating demon that flew at the victim and then disappeared before coalescing inside him, slowly liquefying his insides while a deep ghostly laugh...

    D&D 5E (2014) Troll Lord Games Goes 5e - A0 The Rising Knight -- Adventures for 5th Edition Rules

Good to hear! 3e's cumbersome stat blocks are one of the things I don't miss about the system...

D&D 5E (2014) Enforcing theme/structure by saying NO to players

Fair enough. I love winging it during the game, just not so much to start the game. A nice foundation, where everyone's expectations are met and no surprises with regard to the fundamentals of the game has made for a more sturdy foundation to the campaign, in my experience. Your mileage may...

D&D 5E (2014) Enforcing theme/structure by saying NO to players

But "anything" and "everything" are different ideas. In a world where everything is possible, everything exists, making it the same everything over and over. That's not inherently bad, some people play nothing but generic fantasy settings and enjoy it, and that's fine. Just not my own cup of...

D&D 5E (2014) Enforcing theme/structure by saying NO to players

I could do a bare-bones, no-substance campaign that way, I guess. Otherwise, the players are going to have to wait so long to play, they won't remember what they made. You read a lot into that. All I said was I wouldn't want to do that all the time. My current game is FR, and anything in...

D&D 5E (2014) Enforcing theme/structure by saying NO to players

"Make PCs and then I'll create an entire setting around your choices"? That seems odd. Why not just discuss it before anyone makes anything? Toss ideas around, state preferences, repeat until everyone is satisfied. Personal preference?

D&D 5E (2014) Enforcing theme/structure by saying NO to players

That's poor campaign management by the DM. Game and setting considerations should be discussed before PC are thought about, let alone created. Otherwise, yeah, that game's probably not going to stick around for long.

D&D 5E (2014) Enforcing theme/structure by saying NO to players

I never get player buy-in and then have them complain afterwards. That's not actual buy-in. You need the players to be honest with you about what they want out of a game. That said, if everyone gets their way, you get Smorgasbord: the Kitchen Sink RPG. That might be fun to play once, but I...

I'm playing a game I like to call, "Move to a New City" The horror!

D&D 5E (2014) [Primeval Thule] House rules for spellcasting

Yeah, one thing I'm trying to avoid is a lot of work to make something less feasible. I'd also rather just have spellcasters be bad guys, but honestly, who are the "good guys" in PT? Yeah, there's "really bad guys," but it would be interesting to roleplay a PC that wants to use the power of...

D&D 5E (2014) [Primeval Thule] House rules for spellcasting

Interesting. Yeah, the 1 in 20 chance is small, something we discovered with out current wild mage (thus the [spell level] in 20 house rule). I considered this, but it doesn't quite pack the same punch. I want magic to come with a heavy price. One that's acceptable to the power mad, and no...

D&D 5E (2014) [Primeval Thule] House rules for spellcasting

We've actually been doing this with out WM PC in our FR game. It's maybe a bit much for the more drastic and permanent things that could happen to a wizard with my rules...might be something to consider for warlocks. Probably never see a PC warlock, but that's not a bad result, either.

D&D 5E (2014) [Primeval Thule] House rules for spellcasting

So in PT, magic is rare, untrusted, and dangerous. But magic is really none of those things in D&D. The Wild Mage sorcerer can be random, but the effects are fairly tame and often actually helpful. So I'm throwing around some ideas for house rules to make magic less cozy and reliable, using...

    D&D 5E (2014) Use of Investigation

If you've got that proficiency, sure. And if it makes sense for that particular trap, of course. But Investigation could also work, depending again. As I mentioned earlier in the thread, perception (awareness) and investigation (scrutiny) have different meanings. Time requirements is part...
