    Optimization and optimizers...

Mod Note: Assigning value to people based on their play preferences isn't Deep. It's kinda junior-high-school cliquishness. How about we stop that, folks, please and thanks, before it gets even more insulting, hm? Thanks.

Judge Rules That AI Training Doesn't Violate Copyright

Again, something you seem to ignore - a lot of the buying of books was done AFTER they used MILLIONS of pirated copies to do the training. Part of the point here is that buying books after the fact does not justify the piracy. "We will have a trial on the pirated copies used to create...

How did you learn to run or play Mage?

The rest of the Technocracy has cool and scary stuff, though. Underlying the split was a philosophical difference - the Sons of Ether mostly just want to play with their very neat toys and figure out cool new stuff. The rest of the Technocracy are the ones who want to dominate minds and...

How did you learn to run or play Mage?

Um, no. The architects of Modernity are the Technocracy, which the Sons of Ether left because they were so stodgy they voted to erase the luminiferous ether from consensus reality. The Sons of Ether, overall, are mad scientists. They are generally far more interested in making cool stuff than...

    D&D 5E (2014) Dark Sun, problematic content, and 5E…

Mod Note: This thread is about Dark Sun, not the state of the real world today. How about we bring it back around to the actual topic, please and thanks.

TSR The Full & Glorious History of NuTSR

If your liver is in danger from hearing about a person being a doofus... there's several billion doofuses (doofi?) on the planet. Dodging this one isn't going to save you.

How did you learn to run or play Mage?

The problem is that this generated player frustration, not character angst. Design hint: Don't make your game such that you can't actually play the game - players ragequit, and don't buy any more.

How did you learn to run or play Mage?

Might want to be a little careful about this question. I can start with: I think the game is plenty interesting as presented - you don't need to buy and use rulebooks of other games for it to be interesting. But, even as presented, the game gives you an entire setting, and that setting has...

    Disney sues Midjourney

I countered with three high-profile examples of tools enabling large-scale infringement that WERE found complicit: Napster, Kazaa and The Pirate Bay.

    Disney sues Midjourney

I reject your attempt to get me to oversimplify my answer.

    Disney sues Midjourney

That's because that's not how copyright enforcement works. It isn't done "generally". It is done in specific. So, peer-to-peer filesharing technology isn't illegal, but Napster and Kazaa both died under the weight of their lawsuit losses, and the British Government has ordered The Pirate Bay...

    Disney sues Midjourney

In the past, tools that demonstrably enable large scale infringement have been found to be complicit in that infringement.

    Disney sues Midjourney

And it is in that point that Disney will probably win against Midjourney - it sounds like Disney is brining evidence of Midjourney directly reproducing Disney artwork, and effectively advertising their services based on that ability. That, if true, will scuttle the transformative defense.

D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

I think at this point we have reached "yes it is/no it isn't" territory, and I feel no compulsion to spend further effort to disabuse you of your notion.

D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

Technically, perhaps. But that's a game on the same level of, "I have six chocloate chip cookies, when do I want to eat them." It isn't usually a particularly deep, difficult, or satisfying game. In some games (say, D&D, with Inspiration) that game devolves into people forgetting the darned...

Didn't the whole cook thing come up as a "fail forward" or "success with complications" example? This seems more like critical failure - not only do you not get the lock open, but something else bad is brewing behind the door.

For those who don't play D&D (or its clones), what keeps you engaged with EN World?

Discussion of other places usually eventually takes the form of trash-talking, which we aren't okay with. .

I watched it. On the scale of insanity this multi-year things has spawned... nah, not really all that insane, especially if we set the "starting NuTSR" thing aside as just more of the usual grasping for legitimacy. In the video, he admits that association with NuTSR ruined his game design...
