D&D General Ray Winninger on 5e’s success, product cadence, the OGL, and more.

Then we're just arguing levels. How much did WotC change because it needed changing... how much did they not change because they didn't want to offend existing players... how much did they change to help onboard new players... how much did they not change because of fear of losing existing...

D&D General Ray Winninger on 5e’s success, product cadence, the OGL, and more.

Sure, it'd be nice if 5E14 players moved on to 5E24... but WotC doesn't base their designs or publish around guaranteeing that. But yeah... the fact that they released the open playtests so that current 5E14 players could tell them what they did or did not like about potential changes is...

Mapping the Town - What should a Fantasy Town look like?

Well, of course. I keep saying the only reason why these things are as they are in the game is due to wanting to maintain the "fantasy" of their "medieval knights and princesses" stories. I get that. But it's when someone says X "isn't realistic" in the game and should really be written or...

Mapping the Town - What should a Fantasy Town look like?

If I'm understanding your reference correctly, yes. I do know that Silverymoon has a force dome over their city, which means even in Faerun it is possible. So why no other cities ever bothered to advance their magical technology over the tens of thousands of years to make it easier and more...
  5. DEFCON 1

D&D General Ray Winninger on 5e’s success, product cadence, the OGL, and more.

True... but then again I might suggest that the D&D doesn't necessarily care if established players buy the three new core books? If 5E14 players stick with 5E14, that's not really a problem. Yes, WotC won't get $150 from those players... but those players are still D&D 5E players and thus a...

D&D General Ray Winninger on 5e’s success, product cadence, the OGL, and more.

Heh... I would say it's more accurate to say that the 3rd party market decimated themselves, LOL. Once every single Tom, Dick, and Harry thought they could become a D&D designer and publisher off the 3E SRD and OGL... they flooded the market with so much material (90% of which was crap) that...

Mapping the Town - What should a Fantasy Town look like?

I would disagree that flying monsters would not be a regular occurrence. I think wyverns, hippogriffs, chimera, harpies, griffons, young dragons, and other flying creatures that require large animals for sustenance would be just as likely to invade populated areas to go after and grab cows...

Mapping the Town - What should a Fantasy Town look like?

This is where we run into the issue between setting and game (as I think you are saying.) Wall of Force lasts for 10 minutes because that's the game having a rule that the designers have installed. However, if we were to consider any sort of "reality" of human beings within a certain setting...

Mapping the Town - What should a Fantasy Town look like?

Let's also ignore all the magic and monsters that can walk through or destroy stone as easy as it is to destroy straw and wood... thereby making stone structures as the primary defense of an area a major waste of time and money as well. This goes back to that other thread where we talk about...

Mapping the Town - What should a Fantasy Town look like?

This right here. With the ubiquity of flying monsters in most D&D settings, there's a noticeable lack of defenses with regards to creatures that can go over walls. It's always seemed a little silly to me that medieval D&D settings still have communities spending years upon years of quarrying...

    D&D 5E (2014) Lesser Vorpal Sword

Confirming a crit doesn't mean needing to roll a second Nat 20 (which I agree would be rubbish), but rather it means you make a second attack roll and if you were to hit again then the crit is confirmed.

    D&D 5E (2014) Lesser Vorpal Sword

My paladin in a PF game I'm playing in was given a +3 vorpal sword at probably 7th-8th level that also required a Nat 20 crit confirmation, so like yours it was a lower-powered one than normal. At least for us it has never really been a big deal because we face a large variety of enemies and...

The Gith Are Now Aberrations in Dungeons & Dragons

Heh heh... which begs the question why should anyone actually be all that concerned by any of it? Every single thing in D&D has been changed multiple times throughout the last 50 years... some going back and forth, others changing to something completely new each time... and will easily get...
  14. DEFCON 1

D&D General Ray Winninger on 5e’s success, product cadence, the OGL, and more.

If people really wanted generic material, we wouldn't see so many complaints by people on the boards here that settings like Greyhawk, Dark Sun, and Mystera are not yet opened on it. People want to buy specific IP material, not material with the serial numbers filed off... like it or not. And...

Probably that the more product on D&D Beyond, the more lost in the shuffle some of that product gets (including their own). They have only begun dipping their toes into 3rd party publishing... there's probably a whole bunch of sales metrics they are looking at to know at what rate to publish...
  19. DEFCON 1

D&D General Ray Winninger on 5e’s success, product cadence, the OGL, and more.

DMs Guild is like the publishing version of D&D 5E... it's like the baseline foundation for which new people can get their start. It's popular, easy to find, it sets everything up for you, and it lets you play in the exceedingly large Dungeons & Dragons sandbox. Is it the "best" method for...

D&D 5E (2024) Monster manual Fey video up

Funny... I always find having game rules to follow at all detracts from the fantasy. :)
